Tripping Over September

September

September is a pretty big month in my neck of the woods. Namely, because it is the month of my birth–HUZZAH! But it’s also the beginning of some hardcore publishing before the year is out, which means LOTS of great books. These are just  a few of the great titles coming out this September that I’m the most excited about. Covers are links to Goodreads, my lovelies!

the dream thieves_TOSTHE DREAM THIEVES: THE RAVEN CYCLE #2 by Maggie Stiefvater

Little bit cheating because I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this at BEA this year and I’ve read it already. IT WAS AWESOME. This series keeps getting better. Also, RONAN LYNCH IS MY LOVE.

(September 17, 2013 from Scholastic Press)

Vicious_TOSVICIOUS by V.E. Schwab

I’ve only read one book by Victoria SchwabTHE NEAR WITCH–but it was dark and lovely, and I have THE ARCHIVED waiting for me, too. This one, though, is her first foray into adult-ness, and she’s doing it with SUPERHEROES. Honestly.

(September 24, 2013 from Tor)

the burning sky_TOSTHE BURNING SKY: THE ELEMENTAL TRILOGY #1 by Sherry Thomas

Oooh, a new fantasy series? Don’t mind if I do. Elemental mages, prophecies, Princes and romance, and a bad guy known as the Bane–it all sounds beyond excellent.

(September 17, 2013 from Balzer + Bray)

antigoddess_TOSANTIGODDESS: GODDESS WAR #1 by Kendare Blake

Don’t tease me with mythology. Don’t even. This one sounds even more badass than usual because we’re not dealing with gods and goddesses as we know them, golden and immortal. These gods and goddesses are dying–I KNOW, RIGHT?!–and they seek out the prophetess, Cassandra, now a young girl, to help them. I’m SO EXCITED for this one.

(September 10, 2013 from Tor Teen)

Magic marks the spot_TOSMAGIC MARKS THE SPOT: THE VERY NEARLY HONORABLE LEAGUE OF PIRATES #1 by Caroline Carlson

I wish I encountered more books about pirates, friends. This one, about a young girl who wants to join a league of pirates but must make them see past the fact that she’s a girl, sounds fun and funny and awesome.

(September 10, 2013 from Harper Collins)

fangirl_TOSFANGIRL by Rainbow Rowell

I flat-out LOVED ELEANOR & PARK, friends, so to say that I’m excited about this book about twin sisters who are going away to college, sounds great. I’m really intrigued by the fanfic aspect, too. I’ve heard that some people didn’t love this one as much as E&P, but I’m still looking forward to it.

(September 10, 2013 from St. Martin’s Griffin)

The Outside_TOSTHE OUTSIDE: THE HALLOWED ONES #2 by Laura Bickle

Another cheat, because I just finished reading this one. But THE HALLOWED ONES was such a great vampire book, and I couldn’t wait to see how things turned out for Katie and Alex after they were put under the Bann and kicked out of Katie’s Amish community. Spoiler: It was very good.

(September 3, 2013 from Harcourt Children’s Books)

Tripping Over August

Tripping Over August

Five Books I’m Looking Forward to This Month!

August isn’t necessarily a month that screams “LOTS OF NEW THINGS!!” friends, but there’s still some great books coming out this month that I am DYING to read. Huzzah!

Book cover for Between the Devil and the Deep Blue SeaGoodreads

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: Between #1 by April Genevieve Tucholke

I’m so interested in this one! The idea of having feels that might not be genuine because the DEVIL MAKES YOU FEEL THEM is both unsettling and intriguing. Also, beach town. I’m a sucker for those for sure. (August 15 from Dial)

Book cover for The Lost Kingdom by Matthew J. KirbyGoodreads

The Lost Kingdom by Matthew J. Kirby

ICEFALL is one of my biggest middle grade loves, so when I heard that Matthew J. Kirby was coming out with a new book that’s like cowboy steampunk, I almost died. Plus, it’s about a father-son duo–not many of those in my pile. WORD. (August 27 from Scholastic)

Book cover for Sleeping Beauty's Daughters by Diane ZahlerGoodreads

Sleeping Beauty’s Daughters by Diane Zahler

WHOA. HOLD UP. A middle grade fairy tale about the daughters of Sleeping Beauty who must find their fairy aunt to keep one of them from falling under the same curse that put their mother in an enchanted sleep? I’M IN. (August 27 from Harper Collins)

Book cover for Relic by Renee CollinsGoodreads

Relic by Renee Collins

Friends, there’s SO MUCH western/cowboy/fantasy right now. HOW EXCITING IS THAT?! This book is about a world where the bones of fantastical creatures are sold for the little bits of leftover magic they have, and one girl–who works in a saloon, for crying out loud–gets wrapped up in some magic shenanigans and has to save her town. It sounds amazing. (August 27 from Entangled Teen)

Book cover for The Bitter Kingdom by Rae CarsonGoodreads

The Bitter Kingdom: Girl of Fire and Thorns #3 by Rae Carson

Friends, I’m reading an ARC of this right now and so far, it’s a outstanding as books 1 and 2. Elisa is a exceptionally awesome character, and HECTOR. MY GOD. Their chemistry, especially in book 2, is absolutely off the charts. Can’t wait to see how things end! (August 27 from Greenwillow)

That’s it for me! What books are YOU GUYS looking forward to this month?

Cover Reveal + Q&A: Broken by CJ Lyons

Book cover for Broken by CJ Lyons

 Broken by CJ Lyons

November 5, 2013 from Sourcebooks Fire

For Scarlet Killian, every day is a game of Russian roulette—she has a 1 in 5 chance of dying…

New York Times bestselling author CJ Lyons makes her YA debut with a fast-paced thriller sure to keep readers guessing to the very last page.

Fifteen-year-old Scarlet Killian has one chance for a normal life. Only problem? It just might kill her. Diagnosed with a rare and untreatable heart condition, Scarlet has never taken the school bus. Or giggled with friends during lunch. Or spied on a crush out of the corner of her eye. Scarlet has come to terms with the fact that despite the best efforts of her doctors and parents, she’s going to die. Literally of a broken heart. So when her parents offer her a week to prove she can survive high school, Scarlet knows her time is now… or never.

Scarlet can feel her heart beating out of control with every slammed locker and every sideways glance in the hallway. But for the first time in her life she makes real friends. She also makes new discoveries about the truth behind her illness… a truth that might just kill her before her heart does.

Friends, I’m pretty excited to be taking part in this cover reveal for BROKEN, the YA debut from CJ Lyons. It sounds really intense and emotional, and we all know that I LOVE that stuff! Links ahoy!

Q & A with CJ Lyons

Q: Is Long QT a real disease?

CJ: Yes. As a pediatrician I diagnosed my niece with Long QT Syndrome when she was born. Her heart specialists believe she’s the youngest person in the world diagnosed with Long QT. She’s had to take medicine every day of her life and can’t ever skip a day. So far that’s added up to over ten thousand pills taken.

You know that feeling you get when you’ve run as hard and fast as you can and you stop but your heart keeps galloping along? And you wonder for a second if maybe it’s not going to stop, but will keep galloping out of control? But then of course it settles back down. For people with Long QT, their heart doesn’t change gears well, going from regular to galloping and back again. So they have to avoid anything that would make their heart race. No sports or aerobic exercise. No horror films. No roller coaster rides. No jumping into cold water on a hot summer’s day.

But that doesn’t have to stop someone with Long QT like my niece from having a great life. Today she is a brilliant, active fourteen-year-old who gets straight A’s, enjoys riding horses, archery, reading, breeding Rottweilers, and who wants to grow up to be either a fashion designer or President of the United States. Her main fashion accessory is her portable defibrillator, Phil, who goes with her everywhere, including camping, to the beach, and recently to her first Broadway show.

BROKEN is dedicated to her fearless approach to life where outwitting Death is simply part of her daily routine.

Q: What was it like working in an ER? Is it like on TV?

CJ: Definitely nothing like Grey’s Anatomy, but the first few seasons of ER get it right. Working in the ER is basically about learning how to control (and live with) chaos, the art of listening, and how to quickly decide what’s the most important thing you need to tackle next. I worked three jobs to put myself through medical school and one of them was waitressing at a very busy family restaurant. Honestly, that was the best preparation I ever could have had for life in the ER.

Q: Why did you leave medicine to write books?

CJ: I’ve been a storyteller all my life—a fact that used to get me placed in time-out a lot as a kid. But writing stories has always been my way of making sense of the chaos that goes on in the world around us. I wrote my first novel in college and wrote two more science fiction novels in medical school.

Then, while I was an intern at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, one of my close friends was murdered. Dealing with that grief and trauma while still working seventy hours a week and trying to save lives—I wasn’t prepared for that. So I turned to my writing and that’s when I wrote my first thriller. I never thought about actually making a career of it until years later when friends who were published authors encouraged me to enter a national writing contest and I was a finalist. This led to several publishing contracts and I realized that as much as I loved being a doctor, here was a chance for a second dream come true: being a full time writer.

It was a huge leap of faith leaving my job (and my patients—I missed them, a lot!) but I’ve always believed that if you’re going to dream, you should dream big, so I went for it. Since then I’ve published twenty books, hit #2 on the New York Times bestseller list, won awards for my writing, and most importantly, have had the chance to impact millions of people through my novels. Talk about a dream come true!

Q: What’s your best advice for someone who wants to be a writer?

CJ: Never surrender, never give up. Writing is hard work, it takes years to master the craft, so you need to stick with it. And read, read, read…pay attention to what makes the books you like work as well as why the books you don’t like fail. You never stop learning in this job, but that’s also what makes it so much fun.

About CJ Lyons

A New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of sixteen novels, former pediatric ER doctor CJ Lyons has lived the life she writes about in her cutting edge thrillers with heart. CJ has been called a “master within the genre” (Pittsburgh Magazine), and her work has been praised as “breathtakingly fast-paced” and “riveting” (Publishers Weekly) with “characters with beating hearts and three dimensions” (Newsday). The author of thrillers such as the Lucy Guardino FBI series, she has sold over 1 million books in the last year.

When not writing, she can be found walking the beaches near her South Carolina Lowcountry home in Columbia, SC, listening to the voices in her head and plotting new and devious ways to create mayhem for her characters. To learn more about her Thrillers with Heart go to www.CJLyons.net.

Tripping Over July

Tripping Over

Five Books I’m Looking Forward to This Month!

I have to admit, friends, July is a slow month for me in terms of books that I want. Which–don’t get me wrong–I’m a little bit ok with, because let’s be honest, I need the break! But even considering this “break”, there’s seriously no way an entire month will ever pass without there being at least five books I’m dying to read coming out, and this month is no exception. Here’s what I’m tripping over this July!

Tripping OverThe Theory of Everything by Kari Luna

Amazon || Goodreads

Just looking at the cover of this book absolutely makes me so curious and happy. What’s with the panda? Is this book about furries? How come the girl is wearing that quirky-awesome dress? Turns out this book is about a girl obsessed with the 80s whose scientist dad goes missing. Then she starts seeing things. Hence the panda furries. I’m SO INTRIGUED. (July 11, 2013 from Philomel)

Tripping OverAll Our Pretty Songs by Sarah McCarry

Amazon || Goodreads

I’ve been waiting for this book, friends, because it sounds so mysterious and intense. Also, it’s a retelling of the Orpheus myth, set in 1990s Pacific Northwest, and centered around music. Plus there’s a great-sounding angle with the friendship between the two main characters, two girls named Aurora and another girl whose name we don’t know. Color me intrigued. AGAIN. (July 30, 2013 from St. Martin’s Griffin)

Tripping Over

Dirty Little Secret by Jennifer Echols

Amazon || Goodreads

So, cheating a little bit because I already read this one thanks to an eGalley from the publisher and really enjoyed it, as I always do with Echols books. LOVED the Nashville aspect of it, because I LOVE that show. Review going up soon–this week, hopefully. (July 16, 2013 from MTV Books)

Tripping OverSYLO: The SYLO Chronicles #1 by D.J. MacHale

Amazon || Goodreads

Don’t tease me with military stuff, friends. In fact, I’ve give you guys a list before of some of my must-read topics, and this book has TWO: military aspects and a Maine setting. I’m so curious about this weird, secretive branch of the military called SYLO that shows up in the Maine hometown of one Tucker Pierce. (July 2, 2013 from Razorbill)

Tripping OverUnder the Empyrean Sky: The Heartland Trilogy #1 by Chuck Wendig

Amazon || Goodreads

I have been looking forward to this books since the instant I first heard about it. First of all, Chuck Wendig is an author I’ve been meaning to read for a while now, although this is his first YA release. But second of all, there is not much about this book that sounds quite like anything else I’ve ever read: a government that only allows the people of the Heartland to grow some jacked up corn (the first line in the Amazon summary of this book is “Fear the corn”; a gang of what sounds like dissatisfied, disgruntled pirates; ILLEGAL GARDENING; rich people who live in the sky–I mean, honestly. (July 30, 2013 from Amazon Children’s Publishing)

What July releases are you looking forward to??

Waiting on Wednesday (29): The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

Waiting on Wednesday

The House of Hades: Heroes of Olympus #4 by Rick Riordan

Book cover for The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

At the conclusion of The Mark of Athena, Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy’s instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through the Gaea’s forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape?

They have no choice. If the demigods don’t succeed, Gaea’s armies will never die. They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.

Guys, I am so in love with Percy Jackson. You know, in that “aww, what an ADORABLE teenager!” kind of way. I’ve been in his corner since I read the first Percy Jackson book while I was in library school. In the Heroes of Olympus series, Percy is growing up FAST, friends, and book 4 (of 6) sees our young made-of-awesome hero trapped in the very depths of mythological hell with his also-made-of-awesome girlfriend, Annabeth. THEY ARE MY FOR REAL FAVORITES. LOOK AT THEM ON THAT COVER!

THE MARK OF ATHENA was one of my favorite books in this new series, so I’m beyond excited–and, if I’m being honest, worried–about where things are going in THE HOUSE OF HADES. Spoiler: things did not end on a happy note at all in TMoA. And, like Leo in that synopsis, I am wondering how Percy and Annabeth will escape Tartarus. The one thing I’m not worried about? Loving this book. That’s basically written in stone already. #nobrainer

THE HOUSE OF HADES comes out October 8, 2013 from Hyperion Books

Tripping Over June

Tripping Over

Five Books I’m Looking Forward to This Month!

So, let’s just disregard the fact that the month of June is closer to be over than beginning because there’s so many GREAT books out this month! I can’t wait to dive into all of them, but these are the five that I’m looking forward to the most. (And yes, I’ve read some of them already. The benefit of both a road trip and putting this post off for three weeks.)

Book cover for The Sea of Tranquility by Katja MillayThe Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay

I actually read this book several months ago when it first came out, and I loved it. Nastya and Josh are two pretty effed up kids with lots of baggage and horrible pasts. I might have to reread it before I write my review because, of course, I took no notes months ago.  Not like that’s a hardship at all. (June 4, 2013 from Atria)

Book cover for Siege and Storm by Leigh BardugoSiege and Storm: The Grisha Trilogy #2 by Leigh Bardugo

I really, REALLY enjoyed book one in this series, SHADOW AND BONE, and this second installment was just as good, maybe better. The world in this series is unfolding in such an interesting, complex way and I’m loving it. I’ll be reviewing this one AND giving away some goodies soon!! (June 4, 2013 from Henry Holt)

Book cover for Star Cursed by Jessica SpotswoodStar Cursed: The Cahill Witch Chronicles #2 by Jessica Spotswood

The cliffhanger at the end of book one, BORN WICKED, was pretty insane. I just finished reading this one while I was on my roadtrip, and things are not getting any easier or better for the Cahill sisters. Jessica Spotswood knows how to end her books in ways that just make me CRAZY with anticipation!! (June 18, 2013 from Putnam Juvenile)

Book cover for Every Day After by Laura GoldenEvery Day After by Laura Golden

YAY middle grade! This one sounds just charming and lovely and a little sad: historical fiction in the South where a little girl’s family is kind of falling apart and a mean girl shows up in town determined to make Lizzie Hawkins’ life even worse by taking her friends away. (June 11, 2013 from Delacorte Press)

Book cover for The Lost Sun by Tessa GrattonThe Lost Sun: The United States of Asgard #1 by Tessa Graton

So, I don’t think this cover is doing this book any favors, but it’s got NORSE MYTHOLOGY in it. Like, Percy Jackson kind of Norse mythology, where the Norse gods exist in the modern world. YES FOREVER. PLUS! There’s a prophetess, a main character who fears he’ll turn into a crazy berserking warrior like his father, and a ROAD TRIP to find a missing god’s son. WORD. (June 25, 2013 from Random House BFYR)

Waiting on Wednesday (28): Tumble & Fall by Alexandra Coutts

Waiting on WednesdayTumble & Fall by Alexandra Coutts

Book cover for Tumble & Fall by Alexandra CouttsA novel about the end of days full of surprising beginnings

The world is living in the shadow of oncoming disaster. An asteroid is set to strike the earth in just one week’s time; catastrophe is unavoidable. The question isn’t how to save the world—the question is, what to do with the time that’s left? Against this stark backdrop, three island teens wrestle with intertwining stories of love, friendship and family—all with the ultimate stakes at hand.

Alexandra Coutts’s TUMBLE & FALL is a powerful story of courage, love, and hope at the end of the world.

So this debut is all APOCALYPSE NOW, friends, and I am READY FOR IT. I’ve been seeing it around lately, and it’s been hovering in my brain for a while. It’s like freaking Armageddon, one of THE epic movies of my teenage years, except minus the rough-around-the-edges oil riggers and the astronauts. BUT! They live on an ISLAND!! Like Lost! Yes, please, to all of these things.

Plus, I am always a fan of books that examine things like seizing the day or living life to the fullest or cramming as much STUFF into a short period of time, and HELLO! That is the entire premise of TUMBLE & FALL. This is a debut I’m anticipating like CRAZY. Also, I love this cover. It’s so pretty with the sparkles!

TUMBLE & FALL comes out September 17, 2013 from Farrar, Straus, and Giroux

Tripping Over May

Tripping Over May

Five Books I’m Looking Forward to This Month

It’s May! Spring is in the air!!! Huzzah! For me, this means that the contemps are singing their siren song and luring me into the depths, from which I will not return. At least not until fall rolls around and I’m ready to start digging into some creeptastic paranormals. ANYWHO…lots of great books coming out this month, but here are the ones that I am most dying to read.

Book cover for Golden by Jessi KirbyGolden by Jessi Kirby

Everyone and THEIR MOTHER has already read this, I think, and it’s not even out yet. I’ve been a big fan of Jessi Kirby’s since her debut, MOONGLASS, but this one is really exciting me. I’m very much looking forward to the mystery angle. (May 14 from Simon & Schuster BFYR)

Book cover for Spirit by Brigid KemmererSpirit: Elemental #3 by Brigid Kemmerer

Friends, this is one of the most underrated series around. For real. The covers are, admittedly, quite horrible, but I am such a huge fan of the insides, I can’t even tell you. The Merrick brothers are my favorites. This book is about one of their friends, Hunter (he of the skinny white jeans on the cover. WHITE SKINNY JEANS. Oof), but seriously–I will ALWAYS read these books. (May 28 from K Teen)

Book cover for Our Song by Jordanna FraibergOur Song by Jordanna Fraiberg

This one–a debut–is about a girl who is in a really bad accident and when she comes to, she’s forgotten most of the details except for a song that keeps replaying in her head. Of course, she meets a guy, they get together but he’s got secrets…you know how it goes. Still, sounds great, and I’m a fan of this song angle. (May 2 from Razorbill)

Book cover for The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah OcklerThe Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler

Friends, the second–the SECOND–I hear about a book that’s about a young girl and her dad in any way at all, I’m basically IN FOREVER. In fact, dads should have been on my Top Ten Tuesday list from this past week. So when I heard that Sarah Ockler’s new book was about a girl and her sick dad and her burgeoning relationship with a boy she swore to stay away from, I was DOUBLE IN. I’m thinking that this will be my first Ockler. (May 21 from Simon Pulse)

Book cover for Maid of Secrets by Jennifer McGowanMaid of Secrets: Maids of Honor #1 by Jennifer McGowan

So, umm, first of all, a historical fiction in Elizabethan England about a secret group of female spies? SPIES?! YES. A murder mystery? YES AGAIN. A Spanish courtier named RAFE? Definitely YES. Cherry on top? This book is blurbed by Robin LaFevers, author of possibly my favorite series out right now, His Fair Assassin. Literally nothing about this book sounds even remotely bad. (May 7 from Simon & Schuster BFYR)

Waiting on Wednesday (27): Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Fangirl

by Rainbow Rowell

book cover for fangirl by rainbow rowellAmazon | Goodreads

A coming-of-age tale of fan fiction, family and first love.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan . . .

But for Cath, being a fan is her life — and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

Or will she just go on living inside somebody else’s fiction?

DO NOT TEASE ME with this fanfiction story, Rainbow Rowell. DO NOT. As a nerd, that angle appeals to me endlessly. But if ELEANOR & PARK is any indication, Rainbow Rowell knows how to pack an emotional punch, and look at all the goodies jammed into that synopsis: sisters, a mother leaving, not wanting to/being afraid to let go of childhood comforts, being in a new place, boys. But what strikes me the most is that little bit about Cath’s dad. I am an absolute sucker for dad stories. I can’t wait to see what other touching and lovely things Rainbow Rowell gets up to in FANGIRL.

(FANGIRL is coming out on September 10, 2013 from St. Martin’s Press)
