Top Ten Reads of 2015

There are a handful of Top Ten Tuesdays that I look forward to every year, and this is one of them. As I read during the year, I mentally catalog which books might wind up on this list. Usually, I have a harder time narrowing things down, but this year’s Top Ten Reads of 2015 was a pretty easy list to compile. I’m not sure if that means I read fewer good books or a greater quantity of really amazing books than I usually do, but these ten books were LEGIT. Some of them I’ve already reread. 2015 was a good year for favorites, friends.

Top Ten Tuesday

When I first ZOOMED through THE WRATH AND THE DAWN with my girls, we all basically died from love. Shazi and Khalid…my brain sometimes can’t process how much I loved reading their story and experiencing their world.

TTT_2015 9 I have to admit: the dragon in UPROOTED wasn’t what I thought it would be. But thankfully, it was BETTER. This was such an engrossing tale, and it’s one of those worlds that I just want to experience the full width and breadth of. TTT_2015 8 Maybe a little bit of a cheat with this one because EVERY MOVE isn’t out in the US yet. I loved the first two books in this amazing series so much that I ordered them all from the Australian publisher so that I could read them. This is an excellent conclusion to legitimately my favorite Sherlock retelling. TTT_2015 7A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES is the first of two Sarah J. Maas books on this list–talk about someone having an epic year, guys! Her books and her writing just always ensnare me in the best possible way. Her characters are passionate and tough and the drama is always intense. Can’t wait for more about Feyre and Tamlin. TTT_2015 6 For me, every Sarah Dessen book I read is better than the last. SAINT ANYTHING was really enjoyable to me because the characters are so endearing and complex. I particularly loved the relationship between Sydney and Mac. It’s so sweet and supportive.TTT_2015 4 I COULD NOT PUT ILLUMINAE DOWN WHICH WAS HELL ON MY WRISTS BUT I DON’T EVEN CARE. I’m not usually down with science fiction. It sometimes feels too much like…well, science. But the intense drama and action in this book was perfection. PERFECTION. Adored it. You’ll find out why when I review it (hopefully SO SOON; I’ve been such a review slacker lately.)TTT_2015 3 I’m going to be straight with you guys: I liked SIX OF CROWS a little better than the Grisha trilogy, I think. Actually I’m pretty sure. There’s just something about Kaz and Inej and all of the characters that make up this gang! I could read about them forever. Also, I’m a huge sucker for heists, and this is a great one. I’m also so horrifically behind on my reviews that I haven’t reviewed this one yet. Bad blogger award goes to me. TTT_2015 2 God, isn’t Willowdean just THE BEST?! I adored DUMPLIN’, another casualty of my Bad Blogger Award. (I’m getting to them, I swear.) The sass and the heart…it’s just what basically everyone needs always. TTT_2015 1 THIS BOOK. There is no order to this list, but if I had to pick my absolute, for real favorites of 2015, QUEEN OF SHADOWS would be one. I am 100% in it to win it with this series. The more I can read about Aelin, the better off I’ll be. Ditto for Rowan. Ditto for this world. Ditto for Manon and Abraxos and everything. TTT_2015

I’LL MEET YOU THERE is the only book on this list that I’ve read twice. Because I am always a little weaker in the knees for stories about veterans. Because Josh and Sky are one of my all-time OTPs. Because I legit pretend they are real because I love them so much. Because of THAT LETTER. So many feels. Like actual, physical feels while I was reading. So much love.

Top Ten 2016 Debuts I’m Looking Forward To

YAY, DEBUTS! I’m always excited to discover new authors, and these ten books have been on my radar for a while now. I have good feelings about 2016, friends. These books all look fantastic.

2016 debuts

THE LOVE THAT SPLIT THE WORLD • Emily Henry | January 26, 2016, Razorbill. I’m BEYOND excited for this book. It has so many things that appeal to me: comparisons to Friday Night Lights, one of my favorite TV shows of all time; time travel; romance. I NEED IT.

THE MAY QUEEN MURDERS • Sarah Jude | May 3, 2016, HMH Books for Young Readers. This book sounds so wonderfully creepy, with the woods and the superstitious townsfolk and THAT COVER.

STONE FIELD • Christy Lenzi | March 29, 2016, Roaring Brook Press. This is a WUTHERING HEIGHTS retelling, and even though I’ve never read that book (eeep!), I’m still completely enamored with the sound of this one. Historical fiction,

LOVE, LIES & SPIES • Cindy Antsey | April 19, 2016, Swoon Reads. Guys, there are few things I enjoy more than historical romances. They’re just so damn fun! This book also reminds me a lot of one of my favorite series, Lauren Willig’s Pink Carnation. I’m ready for this.

A STUDY IN CHARLOTTE (A Study in Charlotte #1) • Brittany Cavallaro | March 1, 2016, Katherine Tegen Books. I’m sorry, did someone say Sherlock? I’m in. Already preordered this one.

BLACKHEARTS • Nicole Castroman | February 9, 2016, Simon Pulse. I’m very much on the bandwagon for this origin story for Captain Hook. VERY MUCH.

INTO THE DIM • Janet B. Taylor | March 1, 2016, HMH Books for Young Readers. OMG the number of things about this book that I’m excited for is very high. Scotland, time travel, Eleanor of Aquitaine (!), and a blurb by DIANA GABALDON (!!). Preordered.

ASSASSIN’S HEART • Sarah Ahiers | February 2, 2016, HarperTeen. FANTASY. ASSASSIN FAMILIES. GODFATHER COMPARISON. I’M DYING.

REVENGE AND THE WILD • Michelle Modesto | February 2, 2016, Balzer + Bray. WHOA, Wild West things with magic. Very, very exciting!

DAUGHTERS OF RUIN • K.D. Castner | April 5, 2016, Margaret K. McElderry Books. There are lots of wicked sounding fantasy debuts coming out next year (I’m just realizing also that this list is heavy on the first half of the year; sorry about that!), and this one is definitely on the list. The synopsis name-drops Game of Thrones and Graceling. Can’t beat that for me.

What debuts did I miss? I’m so excited for new books!

Throne of Glass Book Tag

TOG Tag

Guys, I LOVE these book tags. I’m going to do ALL OF THEM. Every time. You don’t even need to tag me in them. I’m just going to do it. So when my girl Brittany legitimately tagged me in the Throne of Glass book tag–shout out to Alexa and Hannah! (haaay girls!)–I immediately started putting together my list. Sometimes I struggled, other times I knew right away which book I would be choosing. Regardless, I had so much fun thinking about this amazing series and about other books I’ve read. So without further blabbing from me, onto the fun times!

Throne of Glass TagAs a general rule, I HATE book cover changes. They almost NEVER improve anything for me. (Go check out the original cover of THE GOOSE GIRL and then check out the paperback redesign. I’ll pass you a barf bag in a second.) That being said, and maybe this is cheating because of the tag we’re working on here, but I REALLY love the redesigns for the Throne of Glass series. One of my bigger cover pet peeves is when fantasies have photos on them. Something about it just seems frustratingly incongruous, since none of those books ever have anything like that technology. I always liked the UK covers of this book better and LOST MY SHIT when Bloomsbury USA adopted that same style and reissued book 1.

throne of glass

*Sigh* It’s so awesome, and Celaena is so much more badass looking. Throne of Glass TagOof. Any of the old Tamora Pierce fantasies. The covers on some of these are just not pretty. There’s one of ALANNA where Alanna looks really angry and has very strong mannish features, and even though she’s supposed to be disguising herself as a boy, she looks like a pissed off 40-year-old. Which sucks because Tamora Pierce is QUEEN.

Throne of Glass Tag

There are so many books I could choose from with epic world-building. My standard is A Song of Ice and Fire, but I’ve also gone with The Kingkiller Chronicle. This time, however, I’m going Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I’m constantly enamored with the way Laini Taylor describes Eretz. I would read books set just in that world. I want to know all of the Chimera. I want to walk the streets of Astrae. I especially want to revisit the land far to the east. I just want to BE there.

Throne of Glass TagOne of my favorite genre mash-ups is historical fiction and fantasy, and one of the most underrated books to combine those two things, and a few other favorites of mine, is THE FALCONER by Elizabeth May. The book is set in 1800s Edinburgh (hellooooo, SCOTLAND!), and Aileana Kameron is not only the daughter of a widower noble, but is also a faerie slayer who loves to tinker with machines and things and create devices of her own making. She’s amazing. Plus I really enjoy the faeries in this book. They’re not friendly. They are dangerous and scheming. I can’t wait for THE VANISHING THRONE to come out so that I can read on.

Throne of Glass TagI remember the first (well, and the only) time I read THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS by Rae Carson and knowing that something CRAZY happens but now knowing what it was, and then BOOM. BIG THINGS. Yes, plural.

Throne of Glass TagI had a hard time coming up with a book for this one. I didn’t want to go with CODE NAME VERITY because I saw it on someone else’s list and didn’t want to steal, even though it’s an excellent answer. So I thought and thought and decided on basically everyone from THE 5TH WAVE. They aren’t all necessarily narrators, but so many characters’ motives are unknown and everything messes with your head–Evan, Colonel Alexander, everything. It’s just one giant mind fuck, pardon my French. I definitely need to reread this one before I dive into book 2. THE 5TH WAVE was so good.

Throne of Glass TagYou might not know it from my lack of reviewing lately, but I read SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo…umm…a while ago. And even though “squad goals” makes me think of SO MANY literary gangs–the Fellowship of the Ring, the Order of the Phoenix, the Raven Boys and Blue Sargent, the crew of the Rampion–the one freshest in my mind was the Dregs. Kaz and Inej are two of my favorite characters right now, and their crew is full of dangerous, kind of selfish people. I loved them all.

Throne of Glass TagI just started listening to the audiobook of OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon and guys? I was ecstatic from the first words that left Davina Porter’s mouth. I’m in full OUTLANDER fangirl mode right now. This book and these characters just jump off the page to me and make me want to go to Scotland and live in their world.

Throne of Glass TagHave you all seen the teaser preview for A MONSTER CALLS by Patrick Ness? The one with Liam Neeson voicing the tree? The one where the minute I heard him start speaking, I welled up? You haven’t?

This book ABSOLUTELY KILLED ME. It killed me so hard. One of my ugliest cries ever. Red face, snot, sobbing, heartbroken–the whole 9 yards.

Throne of Glass TagI almost chose another book on this list for my Manon, but went with THE BONE SEASON by Samantha Shannon instead. There are a few books that I’m intimidated by, but I haven’t read them so I went with something I HAVE read because Manon wouldn’t be a wuss. I wasn’t necessarily intimidated by the content of THE BONE SEASON, but I think what made me hesitate to read it was the buzz and the reviews. I’m glad I got over both of those things because I’m really enjoying this series.

Throne of Glass TagGurl, basically any book by Jay Crownover could be my Rowan, but my favorite has always been NASH. There’s just something about his relationship with Saint (the names in these books though) that got me right in the feels. But all of Jay’s books are swoonworthy.

Throne of Glass Tag

Confession: I’ve had a pretty nice life. I wasn’t spoiled, really, but I was very fortunate when I was growing up to have lots of opportunities that not everyone has. I traveled to Europe, went to private school, had parents that went overboard on Christmas. I didn’t struggle for much, aside from having friends who weren’t assholes. I’ve always understood that these things came from hard work (both my own and my family’s), but when I first read ELEANOR & PARK by Rainbow Rowell, all of that was reinforced. Eleanor had very little opportunity for anything. A home life that was, frankly, awful. She struggled for basic things that I did not. It was a great reminder for me that I was incredibly fortunate growing up, all things considered, and it increased my love and admiration for Eleanor a million-fold.

Throne of Glass TagI almost chose this book as my Manon, but not because of what it’s about or the length or anything like that. It’s a Celtic fantasy. HELLO, I love that stuff. What intimidated me was this: Alyssa gave me DAUGHTER OF THE FOREST by Juliet Marillier, as she often does to basically anyone, because she adores it, because it speaks to her, and because it legitimately kept her up when other things wanted to bring her down. THAT’S PRESSURE, YO. Me telling Alyssa that I didn’t like DoTF would be like me telling a new mother that her baby is ugly. Probably that wouldn’t happen, but, like, what if her baby IS ugly? AHHH STRESSS! Thankfully, that didn’t happen, and I’ve continued to be thankful to Alyssa for introducing me to this series and wanting to share her favorite book with me.

Throne of Glass TagThis one is hard for me. I don’t know how to choose! I think what I’m going to go with is slump-breakers, and for that, it’s not necessarily a specific book as much as it’s a genre. Any kind of historical or adult romance novel will get me out of any rut, any time. AH that feels like a cop out! But I literally cannot choose anything else.

If you are reading this post, I tag you!

Waiting on Wednesday | The Vanishing Throne

The Vanishing Throne

The Vanishing Throne: The Falconer #2 • Elizabeth May

Book Cover The Vanishing Throne Elizabeth May

The second book in the Falconer trilogy is packed with surprises and suspense.

Aileana Kameron, the Falconer, disappeared through the portal that she was trying to close forever. Now she wakes up in the fae world, trapped and tortured by the evil Lonnrach. With the help of an unexpected ally, Aileana re-enters the human world, only to find everything irrevocably changed. Edinburgh has been destroyed, and the few human survivors are living in an uneasy truce with the fae, while both worlds are in danger of disappearing altogether. Aileana holds the key to saving both worlds, but in order to do so she must awaken her latent Falconer powers. And the price of doing that might be her life.

Rich with imaginative detail, action, fae lore, and romance, The Vanishing Throne is a thrilling sequel to The Falconer.

Guys, I enjoyed the CRAP out of THE FALCONER, with its historical fiction, Scotland, faeries, murder, romance, and a BADASS faerie-killing MC who likes building awesome steampunky things as a hobby. Aileana Kameron is excellent, and I can’t wait to see what happens in THE VANISHING THRONE. I’ve been so dying for it for such a long time. (Also, I love this cover.)

THE VANISHING THRONE comes out June 7, 2016 from Chronicle Books

Top Ten Debut Authors Who Have Me Looking Forward To Their Sophomore Novel

Whew! What a mouthful! It’s been a while since I last dove into Top Ten Tuesday, but I’m glad to be doing this topic! Isn’t it just the best when you discover a wonderful new author whose book just grabs you and speaks to you and makes you CRAZY with wanting more? I do. These 10 authors wrote some of my favorite recent debuts and I’m incredibly excited to get their next books!

debut author

I really enjoyed the mix of paranormal and historical fiction in Virginia Boecker’s debut, THE WITCH HUNTER. I need to do a reread before book 2 comes out, but I loved the way the magic and the history and the characters all pulled this story together. debut author

DUH I LOVED THE WRATH AND THE DAWN. I loved it so much, guys. The world-building, the atmosphere, the AMAZING Shazi and Khalid–it all blew me away. I’m a little anxious because there seems to be a lot of things hanging around that need to be resolved in book 2, but mostly I’m salivating for it. debut author

I’m so behind on some of my reviews, which is quite honestly the standard around here. THE STORYSPINNER is one of those books, alas. For the record, me not getting around to reviewing is strictly lack of time. I really liked this book and am super excited for book 2. There are lots of debuts here with magic in them, but all of the systems are different, and I love that. I’m also really enjoying the gypsy angle here. Big fan. debut author GUYSSSS, FIRST & THEN was so cute! I’m going to be reviewing it soon. It’s such a heartwarming romance between really great characters, Devon and Ezra. AWWW I want to reread it now. debut author I really thought that I was kind of over vampires. I’ve said this before. And then I read VELVET by Temple West…and I really enjoyed myself. It didn’t feel old hat or anything. It was just fun. I’m definitely looking forward to more. debut author I actually just finished reading Jennifer’s debut SANCTUARY, and it was aces when it came to atmosphere. Not scary, but still unsettling. A great psychological thriller/ghost story. debut author Another cute contemp! I’ve been reading a few different books that take place in Washington, D.C., lately and I’ve enjoyed them all. THE WRONG SIDE OF RIGHT is about the politics of campaigning, but it’s mostly about family. Also the romance is cute. A very enjoyable debut. debut author THE WATERWORKSS FROM ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES! Guys, seriously though. I cried my EYES OUT when I read this. It was disgusting, but also beautiful. Devastating but also life-affirming. Not bad for a YA debut. I’ll take some more, please.debut author LOVE LETTERS TO THE DEAD really touched me. It was also one of the more differently structured books I’ve read, and I have to give props to Ava Dellaira for pulling off an epistolary novel on her first go. It was emotional and insightful. I’m super bummed that I have to wait until 2018 for her next book!

debut authorThe cover for book 2 in Elizabeth May’s Falconer series was just released and I DIED. Because THE FALCONER was pretty legit, and another great book that combines fantasy and historical fiction, this time with Scotland (YAY) and faeries. I’m VERY excited for more Aileana!

Why Zombie Stories Aren’t About Zombies

(AKA: Nicole’s New Obsession with The Walking Dead)

Guys, this post is a little late today and it’s totally my fault. Nicole from Feed Your Fiction Addiction was completely on time–ahead of schedule, even!–so my apologies to her and you all for dropping the ball. I promise, it has NOTHING to do with the fact that I just can’t with zombies, and that’s what Nicole is talking about today. Specifically, the zombies from The Walking Dead. EEEEEP!

I have a new obsession. And I know I’m about six years late to the game here, but I didn’t know. I didn’t understand what all the hullabaloo was about. But now I do. And I have been converted to a full-fledged fan of The Walking Dead.

Now, if you’re the type of person who’s thought about shopping for one of these, I’m preaching to the choir here. But maybe you’re more like me. I’ve never been a fan of horror – whether we’re talking movies or books, horror has never really been my thing. I’m not the type of person who loves to be scared (don’t even get me started on haunted houses – um, no). So, the idea of zombies never appealed to me. I just assumed that a zombie book (or movie or TV show) would be all about the chills and thrills. With maybe some gore thrown in for good measure.

What I didn’t realize is that the best zombie books aren’t actually about zombies – they’re about survival. They’re about humanity and who we become when the world is at its darkest. Some people live up to the challenge and become a better version of themselves – and some people turn into monsters themselves. These books make us contemplate who we would turn out to be under similar circumstances. They make us examine ourselves and the rest of humanity – with both encouraging and frightening results.

The Walking Dead is a prime example of that. Sure, there’s a lot of gore and there are some truly heart-stopping moments (I often watch while on the elliptical – hey, it’s a great way to help get that heart rate up!), but the real reason I love the show is because of the portrayal of humanity’s struggles – and because of the characters’ journeys.

Want some book recommendations for character-driven zombie (or similar) stories? I have some!

(Click on the links to see my full reviews.)

Allison Hewitt is Trapped by Madeleine Roux – The fun thing about this book is that it’s supposed to be a woman’s blog as she experiences the zombie apocalypse and tries to reach out to other survivors. It even includes comments!

Warm Bodies and The New Hunger by Isaac Marion – Actually, I liked the Warm Bodies movie better than the book in this case, but it was still an enjoyable read. And I really enjoyed the prequel (The New Hunger)!

The Ash and Ruin trilogy by Shauna Granger – In this book, the creatures are called Pestas, but they’re pretty zombie-like! This series is very dark, but also incredibly addictive!

The Hallowed Ones by Laura Bickle – The creatures in this one were actually vampires, I discovered, but they seemed really zombie-ish to me. This series is unique because of the Amish setting!

The Mad World series by Kate L. Mary – Hands down, this is my favorite zombie series ever, but be warned that it’s geared toward the 18+ crowd. The thing that sets this series apart is the characters. If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead, imagine if Darryl was the main character and the other main character was an ex-stripper – these aren’t the type of people who necessarily thrive or get a lot of respect in our society today, but they take on the world in an apocalypse! For the under 18 crowd, try out Mary’s When We Were Human, which is very similar, but involves aliens. I actually didn’t like it quite as much as her Mad World series (probably because I had a hard time not comparing the series in my head), but I’m clearly in the minority since it was the Silver Medalist in the 2015 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards for YA Fantasy/Sci-Fi Fiction.

Some zombie books I haven’t read yet, but I’ve heard great things about:

(I definitely plan to read these!)

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan – There’s going to be a movie of this one, and Carrie Ryan says she really wants to get a bunch of YA authors to play zombies in it! We can only dream …

Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter –  Alice in Wonderland and zombies? Why haven’t I read this yet?

Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard – This series is a combination of zombies and steampunk. I’m intrigued!

So, are you a fan of The Walking Dead? Have any great zombie books you’d like to recommend? Leave them in the comments – I want to know!

Fortnight of Fright

True Ghost Story

What is Halloween without ghost stories? Do we know? No. It’s nothing. I don’t know too many good ones, so it’s a good thing that Jess from Literary, etc. is good at writing them! Thanks, Jess!

Firstly, special thank you to Amy, Alyssa, and Brittany for letting me participate in their A Fortnight of Fright feature. I’ve always had an interest in the paranormal and therefore it seems fitting that I’m here to tell you a true life ghost story and share a few thoughts regarding orbs.

I spent my childhood in a town outside El Paso, Texas: Anthony.  We lived at the end of Fifth and Franklin where Franklin was the boundary between Texas and New Mexico.  In this house, I grew up hearing tales from neighbors about how right outside our living room window there used to be a huge tree where public hangings would occur.   I always left the room when they’d start talking about various sightings.  I’m not sure if the house itself was haunted, but based on a few things that happened in that house, I’d have to say yes it was.

I was about ten years old and my dad was out of town.  My sister and I were in the living room watching TV while my mom was putting away laundry.  I heard what sounded like someone jumping on her bed.  I dismissed it at that moment thinking she might have placed things on her bed causing it sound like someone was jumping.  Here’s the thing-my parents didn’t have a squeaky mattress or bed.  A few minutes later, I heard it again but this time heard some giggling.  My little sister was sitting next to me and she was coloring so I knew it wasn’t her and my mom was now in the kitchen washing dishes.  I started to feel uncomfortable and whatever was jumping on my parents’ bed was not stopping.  Then my sister heard it and we both began to freak out.  We told my mom who thought we were crazy and ordered us back to the living room.  I heard the giggling again and went to look in her room.  I didn’t see anything in the dark and when I turned on the lights nothing was there.  I went back into the living room where it started it up again and I knew my mom couldn’t deny what my sister and I heard because she ordered me to go to the neighbor next door and ask Mrs. Balcorta to come over with her bible while my sister called my grandparents to come over.  What exactly happened afterwards is a blur to me.  All I remember is my grandmother coming to the door (she was a religious woman) and my grandpa taking my sister and me to their house in El Paso (a 15 minute ride).  The next day, my mom told me it was a cricket they found her bed.  Sure.

It’s pretty easy to discount what my sister and I heard that night as nothing.  Franklin Street was in a way a main street in Anthony and maybe it was traffic or the wind.  I don’t buy it and here’s why.  About two years prior to the bed incident, my mom was out of town dealing with a family emergency and my dad went to bed shortly after checking on me and my sister.  The next morning I overheard him telling my mom about what had happened to him.  He had just gotten into bed and was drifting to sleep when he felt someone sit on the bed and lay down next to him.  Nothing scares my dad, but he clearly was shaken up and to this day, when he tells the tale his voice shakes.  He said whatever it was that laid down next to him he moved closer to the side of the bed and just huddled tight in his corner.

There wasn’t something right with the house.  My mom says that when her and my dad were getting ready to move into the house, my grandmother held prayer gatherings on the property and my mom said she felt a force or something that wanted to prevent them from getting in the house.  As a teen, I heard tales of devil worshipers living in the house prior to us and there was rumbling of a pentagram being found in the house (something I’ve never been able to confirm).  I remember my name being called on several occasions and it sounded like my mom, but when I’d check with her, she didn’t call me.  The bedroom next to the garage was always the coldest.  I hated going into that room after the sunset and if I needed to get something I’d make sure my sister was with me.  Even in daylight, it felt like someone was watching me in that room.  I often think about the people who lived in that house after us.  Have they experienced anything?

What about you?  Have you ever experienced anything?  Do you believe in the paranormal?  I like to go on ghost tours if I’m visiting a city for the first time.  While I didn’t go on the nightly tour of St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, I did take some pictures when my sister and I visited it on our own.  Now, I’m not sure if the orbs that appear are spirits, but I do it find it interesting that at one person’s effigy and monument there are no orbs, but in another you see them.

And yet, in this picture of Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll’s monument you can see a few orbs.  I’ve circled them so you can spot them.  What I find interesting is that Campbell is often remembered as the arch enemy of James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose.  Maybe their spirits are dueling it out near Campbell’s monument?

I’m not sure what I think about orbs.  Most people believe they are dust particles and while I can go with that definition, a part of me likes to think they are spirits.  Here are three pictures taken again in St. Giles Cathedral where various orbs appear.
