This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Top Ten 2015 Releases I Meant to Read But Didn’t

WOOO, this list could’ve been as long as the last one. Lots of fantasies, too! What was I doing in 2015 not reading these? Does anyone know? Anyway, these 2015 releases are on my priority to read list for 2016. If we get to December and I’m still behind on some of these, you guys have to let me know.

2015 releases

The Rose Society: The Young Elites #2 by Marie Lu | I enjoyed THE YOUNG ELITES, especially the ending. LIKE, WHOA. I meant to hop onto this sequel ASAP. Alas.

The Things We Know by Heart by Jessi Kirby | I do always like Jessi Kirby’s books, guys, so I generally buy them whenever they come out. This one’s been sitting in a pile for months.

Ice Like Fire: Snow Like Ashes #2 by Sara Raasch | I have to admit, there were times when I was reading SNOW LIKE ASHES where I thought the worldbuilding was a little juvenile. But the characters and the plot made up for it, and I’m really excited to see where things go in book 2.

Shadow Scale: Seraphina #2 by Rachel Hartman | Guys, I reread SERAPHINA last year in preparation for reading SHADOW SCALE. Didn’t happen.

Blood and Salt: Blood and Salt #1 by Kim Liggett | Scary books and I sometimes get along really well, but this one name-drops Children of the Corn and Romeo and Juliet. Ok. Say no more.

Their Fractured Light: Starbound #3 by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner | This series has really gotten me hooked on sci-fi. I’m not usually a huge lover of space and aliens, these books have really made it exciting.

Until We Meet Again by Renee Collins | Alyssa read this one a few months ago and told me I’d love it. That’s all I need to hear.

The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan | I have a HUGE soft spot for royals. I’m just kind of infatuated with them as a group. I’ve also heard nothing but positive things about THE ROYAL WE. Lauren from Bookmark Lit even got me a copy (WOO!), so I didn’t really have any excuse.

Court of Fives: Court of Fives #1 by Kate Elliott | Kate Elliott is one of those fantasy authors that I’m DYING to read. I’ve heard some maybe mixed things about her YA debut, but I still want to give it a go.

The Sword of Summer: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #1 by Rick Riordan | DUH. Need it, even though it’s probably basically the same as Percy Jackson but with Norse gods.

The Anatomical Shape of a Heart by Jenn Bennett | I meant to read this book towards the end of this year–I even carted it with me to Friendsgiving in November–but I never got to it. It sounds like a really emotional contemp, and I’m all about those.

The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes | I keep hearing good things about this cultish sounding story. I saw someone reading it at ALA this past weekend and was like, “OH! Right! I need to read that!” Because I do.

What 2015 releases are you still looking forward to reading?

LOL remember that time when we were only supposed to pick 10 books for Top TEN Tuesday and I picked 20 instead? Sigh. Memories.

2015 End of Year Book Survey

2015 book survey

Woo! I love Jamie‘s end of year surveys, guys! It’s such a fun thing to do and a great way to look back on all the things I did and didn’t do with my reading and my blog. I’m a little late this year, but not so bad! What’s going to be bad (and hard) is choosing which books to talk about, but that’s what makes the End of Year Book Survey such a great time!

2015 book survey

Number of Books You Read

133! My Goodreads goal this year started at 105 and I bumped it up to 130. This is the most books I’ve read in a looooong time.

Number of Re-Reads

This is harder for me to track, but my rough count is 16. Mostly romances. I LOVE rereading, and do it all the time to break slumps.

Genre You Read the Most From

Probably a tie between contemporary romance (of all age ranges) and fantasy. Per usual! If there’s a way to actually figure this out statistically, I don’t know it.

2015 book survey
Best Book You Read in 2015

I always have to cheat with this one, obvs.

Fantasy: QUEEN OF SHADOWS by Sarah J. Maas

Contemporary: I’LL MEET YOU THERE by Heather Demetrios

Sci-Fi: ILLUMINAE by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (haven’t reviewed this one yet, but LOOOOVE)

Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going to Love More But Didn’t

VENGEANCE ROAD by Erin Bowman. I was DYING for this book. Western, gorgeous cover, girl disguised as a boy…and it was good. But something kept me from loving it. Maybe it was the language (very much stereotypical Old West, and probably more historically accurate than any modern speech). Maybe the romance wasn’t grabbing me. Not sure. I’ll review this one very early this year (and a few other stragglers from the last part of 2015) and try and work through my thoughts.

Most Surprising (in a Good Way or Bad Way) Book You Read

PRINCESS OF THORNS by Stacey Jay. I’d had this one just kind of languishing on my TBR and I’m not entirely sure what made me grab it, but I did and WOW, one of the best fantasies I read this year.

Book You “Pushed” the Most People to Read (and They Did)

Hmm…I always push THE SCORPIO RACES on people and Alyssa did finally read it this year, so YAY! I also recommended DUMPLIN’ by Julie Murphy quite a bit. Not sure how many people read it from my recs, though.

Best Series You Started in 2015? Best Sequel of 2015? Best Series Ender of 2015?

Best series I started? SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo, although that’s a hard choice. (This is also one of my straggler reviews from 2015 that I need to post ASAP.)

Best sequel: This is actually hard, but HEART OF BETRAYAL by Mary E. Pearson was very good. Nice twisty ending.

Best series ender: I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for Jay Crownover’s Marked Men series, so ASA gets the nod here.

Favorite New Author You Discovered in 2015

I’ve never read anything by Diana Wynne Jones until Alyssa, Brittany, and I read HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE for our On the Same Page feature. What a super fun book! I really can’t wait to read more in this series and more of her books.

Best Book From a Genre You Don’t Typically Read/Was Out of Your Comfort Zone

I honestly don’t read very many science fiction books, so ILLUMINAE was out of the ordinary for me. Thankfully I didn’t let my preferences for other genres get in my way of reading it because DAYUM. Legit one of the best books I read this year.

Most Action-Packed/Thrilling/Unputdownable Book of the Year

Ummm…ILLUMINAE. Again. Whoops.

Book You Read in 2015 That You Are Most Likely to Re-Read Next Year

Ooooh, this is a tough call because REREADING IS BAE. I’ll definitely reread some of the new adult contemps that I read this year because they’re fast and instant slump breakers for me, but I’ll also probably reread QUEEN OF SHADOWS via audiobook before book 5 comes out.

Favorite Cover of a Book You Read in 2015

I know I said that VENGEANCE ROAD was a little disappointing (like, just a little bit, not a lot), but THIS COVER:

Book cover Vengeance Road Erin Bowman

I love the typeface, the illustration, the colors, the way things tie into the story, everything.

Most Memorable Character of 2015

I’m calling this one a tie between Kaz Brekker from SIX OF CROWS and Willowdean Dickson from DUMPLIN’. VERY different characters with very different lives, but so well-drawn that they are stuck in my head.

Most Beautifully Written Book Read in 2015

Hands down, MIDWINTERBLOOD by Marcus Sedgewick. This is such an interesting, emotional, arresting book. It’s really remarkable, and the language helps to drive those things home when you read it.

Most Thought-Provoking/Life-Changing Book of 2015

MIDWINTERBLOOD again. I don’t know that I would call it “life-changing” as much as I would call it “thought-provoking,” but still, it left me with lots to ponder about relationships and soulmates and the connections we forge with people.

Book You Can’t Believe You Waited UNTIL 2015 to Finally Read

THE EYE OF THE WORLD by Robert Jordan. Wheel of Time is one of THE fantasies series of ever. It’s over 20 books long now, which is incredibly daunting even to someone who LOVES reading series books and the full immersion that comes with reading them. But just getting the first taste of this world and its intricacies was pretty special.

Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2015

Midwinterblood

SO MANY THOUGHTS PROVOKED. That last line especially really just hits me very hard.

Shortest & Longest Book You Read in 2015

DAUGHTERS UNTO DEVILS by Amy Lukavics: 231 pages

QUEEN OF SHADOWS: 648 pages

THE EYE OF THE WORLD: 30 hours, 2 minutes

Book That Shocked You the Most

For real, ILLUMINAE had so many of these moments. It’s just one of the reasons it totally lived up to all the hype for me.

OTP OF THE YEAR (You Will Go Down With This Ship!)

Ooooooh, probably Shazi and Khalid from THE WRATH AND THE DAWN by Renèe Ahdieh. THESE TWO. The romance in this book is just…

blanche

Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship of the Year

You know what relationship I LOOVED this year? Paige and Ryan from THE START OF ME AND YOU by Emery Lord. It starts out with the one-sided intent for romance, but it’s clear pretty quickly that romance isn’t in the cards, and what’s left is a really nice friendship. SO NICE. Ryan is such a great guy. Not a jerk at all. And Paige is great as well. I loved that they became friends.

Favorite Book You Read in 2015 From an Author You’ve Read Previously

SAINT ANYTHING is maybe my favorite Sarah Dessen that I’ve read. A very sweet romance, great friendships, and an emotional family drama.

Best Book You Read in 2015 That You Read Based SOLELY on a Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure

I’m kind of new to graphic novels, but when Alyssa recommends one to me, I grab it. She told me that I might like PRETTY DEADLY by Kelly Sue DeConnick and I did. It was odd sometimes for sure but it was also really interesting and mind-bending.

Newest Fictional Crush From a Book You Read in 2015

I really, REALLY have a thing for Josh Mitchell from I’LL MEET YOU THERE. War veteran, smart ass, sweet in his own way, encouraging, rough around the edges, has a soft spot for dogs. I don’t need anything else, honestly.

Honorable mention goes to Tim Mason from THE BOY MOST LIKELY TO by Huntley Fitzpatrick. TIM! I loved him.

Best 2015 Debut You Read

THE WRATH AND THE DAWN, definitely.

Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year

I loved the world-building/setting in THE WRATH AND THE DAWN so much that I did a Pinterest board for it. It was SO vivid and wonderfully described.

Book That Put a Smile on Your Face/Was the Most FUN to Read

I laughed out loud so many times while reading the graphic novel RAT QUEENS by Kurtis J. Wiebe. Hilarious, kick-ass, fantastical ladies. Such a great time. I can’t wait to read volume 2!

Book That Made You Cry or Nearly Cry in 2015

WOOOOO, ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES by Jennifer Niven made me UGLY SOB. Like, so ugly. I read it with my sister and she ugly sobbed too.

Hidden Gem of the Year

I am a sucker for historical fiction that’s coupled that with any kind of magic or fantasy elements. REBEL MECHANICS by Shanna Swendson–a book that fell through the review cracks this year, alas–was exactly this. It’s almost like the American Revolution was put off a hundred years or so and also magic.

Book That Crushed Your Soul

ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES. No brainer. Devastating.

Most Unique Book You Read in 2015

MIDWINTERBLOOD. Also a no brainer. I’ve never read anything like it.

Book That Made You the Most Mad (Doesn’t Necessarily Mean You Didn’t Like It)

I don’t generally read books that make me MAD I don’t think? But I will get SUPER angry when there are shitty parents in a book I’m reading, and that award for 2015 goes to Sydney’s parents from SAINT ANYTHING. THESE PEOPLE. Especially the mom. They’re so frustrating and hard on Sydney for no fault of her own, and they’re in denial about the guilt of their son. Made me want to pull out my hair so many times.

2015 book survey

Favorite Review That You Wrote in 2015

SIGH. This is always hard for me to answer. I’m generally pretty pleased when I write any review because it means I was motivated and had some free time. But I enjoyed my QUEEN OF SHADOWS review because I just loved that book so much, and also my I’LL MEET YOU THERE review because same.

Best Discussion/Non-Review Post You Had on Your Blog

I’m just not really good at discussion posts. I’ve come to realize this after more than 3 years of blogging. I’m glad, though, that I get to do some nontraditional posts for the On the Same Page feature, and I particularly REALLY enjoyed my post for MIDWINTERBLOOD, where I talked about moons. (You’ll just have to read the book to understand.)

Best Event That You Participated in (Author Signings, Festivals, Virtual Events, Memes, etc.)

Of course, going to BEA was a great time because I got to see so many people and didn’t take things too seriously. I can’t WAIT to see more people at ALA this coming weekend!! YAY!

Also, hosting and participating in the On the Same Page Secret Sister Project is always a lot of work with a wonderful payoff.

Most Challenging Thing About Blogging or Your Reading Life This Year

WRITING REVIEWS. Hands down. I had a really hard time sitting down to write reviews this year, especially the last few months.

Most Popular Post This Year on Your Blog (Whether by Comments or Views)

It’s always the OTSP sign up and FAQ posts hahaha.

Best Bookish Discovery (Book Related Sites, Book Stores, etc.)

I LOOOVE the Etsy store Novelly Yours! Bookish candles! Gimme! I also visited a pretty awesome used book store in Illinois with Brittany and Alyssa called 2nd and Charles. They had so many books there! And some awesome bookish swag.

2015 book survey

One Book You Didn’t Get to in 2015 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2016

GUYSSS, so many! I’m going to single out THE ROSE SOCIETY by Marie Lu, THE PENDERWICKS IN SPRING by Jeanne Birdsall, and THE BLOOD OF OLYMPUS by Rick Riordan.

Book You Are Most Anticipating for 2016 (Non-Debut)

Sorry, I just can’t narrow this down to one: THE RAVEN KING by Maggie Stiefvater and Throne of Glass #5 by Sarah J. Maas. BRING THEM TO MEEEEE.

2016 Debut You Are Most Anticipating

THE LOVE THAT SPLIT THE WORLD by Emily Henry. There’s just so much about this book that I am excited about: Friday Night Lights comparisons, alternate universes, romance, a pretty cover. SIGH.

Series Ender/Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2016

THE RAVEN KING. OMG I’m dying for this book.

One Thing You Hope to Accomplish or Do in Your Reading/Blogging Life in 2016

Not be such a review-writing slacker. It’s pretty bad right now.

A 2016 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend to Everyone

None actually! But I’m reading PASSENGER by Alexandra Bracken right now and it’s REALLY good so far!

Top Ten Classic Fantasies I Want to Read in 2016

When I thought of this topic I got really excited. I LOVE reading classic fantasies and have a bunch that I’m really excited to read. Then, as I was putting together this list, I realized that some of these books aren’t as old as I thought they were. But! My list, my rules, right? So I figure that any book that was published more than 10 years ago is old enough. There is one that skates right under this rule, but just barely! Also, for the purposes of this list, 10 is actually 11.
classic fantasy I picked up a copy of THE BLACK SWAN when I was in Illinois with Alyssa visiting Brittany, and I’m really excited to read it. It’s the second book in a series, but I don’t think I need to read the first one to understand the second. Also, Swan Lake retelling. Ish. BRANG IT. classic fantasy I have never read anything by Guy Gavriel Kay and I feel that, as a fantasy fan, this is a big gap in my reading. He’s written so many well-liked books! Just reading the synopses of his books gets me excited, and THE SUMMER TREE, where a group of college friends get thrown into a fantasy realm, is no exception.classic fantasy Another author that I’ve never read, alas. I’m very much looking forward to reading BITTER GREENS, but I’ve also grabbed a few copies of Kate Forsyth’s older fantasy series on my used book store runs, and THE WITCHES OF EILEANAN sounds right up my alley: witches, prohibited magic, evil queens, dragons. classic fantasy The first book of Sharon Shinn’s that I heard about was ARCHANGEL, and I own it, but I’m also drawn to her more hard-core fantasies. I was lucky enough to have a Secret Santa this year who LOVES Sharon Shinn and gifted me SUMMERS AT AUBURN CASTLE! Actually, my secret sister from last round (hayy Lauren!) also gifted me Sharon Shinn fantasies. So I have a nice little pile to choose from! classic fantasy Ooooh, forgotten BEASTS you say? Fantastical beasts? YASSSS. This is the oldest book on my list and I’m stoked. Never read anything by Patricia A. McKillip either. classic fantasy I read UPROOTED this year with my girls, but I’d heard of Naomi Novik’s fantastical historical fiction about the Napoleonic Wars being fought with dragons long before. It’s so intriguing! Also, it combines two of my favorite things: fantasy and historical fiction. classic fantasy There are SO MANY books to choose from when you’re looking at Robin Hobb’s catalog. I have a few on my TBR, but this one sounds amazing. Mostly because the title–ASSASSIN’S APPRENTICE–hints at, well, assassins. I also love the way the synopsis describes the way nobility are named in this world: by their virtues. HOW AWESOME DOES THAT SOUND. classic fantasy I believe I actually have the first two books in this series on my Kindle (pretty sure Alyssa either gave or recommended them to me). CROWN DUEL just sounds like a great YA fantasy. I’m down. classic fantasyKUSHIEL’S DART is one of those series that seems to have a really vocal, devoted fandom. That alone tells me that, at the very least, reading this book will give me lots to ponder and talk about. I’ve heard great things about this whole series, so I can’t wait to dive in.
classic fantasy YAY TAMORA! I have a mission to read all of her books. Maybe not this year, but I want to do it. I picked up WILD MAGIC at The Book Barn and felt that anticipation! Her books are always a good time. classic fantasy Not gonna lie, I’ve had to restrain myself from buying HEART’S BLOOD a few times because I’m trying not to buy all the books on my secret sister wishlist. But man, I want it BAD. Juliet Marillier retells Beauty and the Beast?! SHUT YOUR MOUTH. classic fantasyWaaay back when our bff status was a lil’ baby, Alyssa gave me the entire boxed set of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles because when we she was wee, she loved them and they impacted her FO LYFE. I’m going to read at least DEALING WITH DRAGONS this year, but probably all of them because let’s be honest: They’re super short.

On The Same Page Secret Sister Project 4.0 | FAQ and Info

Secret Sister Project

On the Same Page Secret Sister Project FAQ

Hey there, friends! We have been absolutely blown away by the generosity and positivity shown during The Secret Sister Project! Thank you all so much for your kind words to those of us who host, and for being there to provide cheer for one another. It is really something to go through the hashtag and see you all lifting each other up despite only being matched to one “sister.” Your generosity shines through and it is heartwarming to be part of a group filled with strong, uplifting people!

Most of you can imagine how much work goes into a project like this. The three of us are expected to always be available to answer questions, keep on top of people who are not abiding by the standards we set, promote the project and so on. It’s tough and frustrating at times, and we are doing everything we can to make it easier on everyone for next round. That being said, this post is going to be LONG and DETAILED and should provide you with all of the information that you need if you want to sign up for the next round.

We ask that you read this post thoroughly, and refer back to it PRIOR to reaching out to us with questions during the project. In addition, keep in mind that the hashtag #otspsecretsister is ALWAYS a fantastic resource for information needed, odds are that someone participating knows the answer to your inquiry!

The Basics

The What

The Secret Sister project is essentially a cheer club. Think Secret Santa but all year round (in 6 month intervals) with less emphasis on big presents, and more thoughtful notes, cards, small somethings sent just to let your secret sister know that you are thinking about her!

The When

  • Sign-ups will go live on January 16, 2016. ANY SIGN-UPS SUBMITTED BEFORE THAT DATE WILL BE DELETED.
  • This round will run from February through July 2016

The Who

You guys! But there are some conditions that must be met prior to signing up, we are going to outline those below under “The Rules.”

The How

On January 16 we will be posting questionnaires on our blogs for you to fill out and email back to us. In addition to the questionnaire, you will also be asked to answer a few questions on a Google form. PLEASE NOTE: If you do not fill out BOTH of these things in full, then you will NOT be paired. The Google form is NEW this round, but it is what we will be using to pair, so DO NOT FORGET.

FAQs

What will I have to do if I sign up to be a secret sister?

This is a commitment, we can’t lie to you. By signing up to be a secret sister you are promising to send at least one small card AND/OR gift to your secret sister a month depending on the “monetary group” you sign up forIt is very important that you don’t sign up for this unless you are willing to follow through. Please think of how sad (and unfair) it would be for someone to be working hard to make their secret sister feel special and not receive anything themselves!

Do I have to send presents?

Depending on the group that you sign up for, it may not be necessary for you to send presents. Keep in mind that this really is meant to be more of a cheering up sort of club.

Look at how extravagant that package is! I don’t have that kind of money…

Neither do I! This is why we have different price ranges, one of which is strictly pen pals – that means NO trinkets, etc! You should never, ever feel as if your package is inadequate as long as you are meeting your price range “standards.” Trust me, it is much more meaningful if you stay within your price range but then send an extra letter or handmade card just to check in that month! Anyone who is getting caught up on the size of the gifts is missing the entire point of the project and will be dealt with accordingly.

Do we have to remain secret?

No, though that is part of the fun! Just leave your name off of the card or box you are sending if you want to remain secret, and reveal yourself whenever you wish! Some have used the same sending and return address, which is sneaky and perfect. It is entirely up to you! (If you are looking for some tips on how to remain secret -like if you want to send an e-book, for example, we can help ya out!)

Do I have to be a blogger to join?

Technically, no. You absolutely do need to be bookish, however. We are book people over here! We do have some non-bloggers who have joined us but full disclosure they are people that we know and trust. That is not to say that we won’t allow you in unless you are a blogger, but as this project was started and is promoted in our blogging community, it is filled with mostly bloggers.

Is this project international?

It was last round! We are going to have to again gauge how many international participants wish to join, and see if we have enough to keep you all secret. Please keep in mind that if you are international and wish to join, you may have to send international in order to be allowed in. We didn’t have to do this last round, and we hope that we won’t have to but we have to gauge interest first!

Umm…I’m a guy so…

That is wonderful! Welcome! I know it is a little off putting to see the word “sister” up there but honestly we just did that because it sounded better than “The Secret Person Project.” I personally would love a secret bro, pal, dude, or friend regardless of gender and we had a few males join us last round!

What are the price ranges, and can we have some examples of what a package would look like for each range?

  • Pen pals: That’s right, this is strictly letters and cards. No trinkets, no extras, nothing. If you want to send ANYTHING more than a letter or a card every month then we ask that you sign up for one of the higher monetary tiers.
  • $5-$10: Send a heartfelt letter to catch your sister up on how things are going that month and then send an e-book, paperback straight from Amazon (thank you Prime shipping!), baked goods, homemade bookmark or other DIY project, or how about a movie night box with a DVD (thanks to the $5 bin at Walmart) and some candy for a movie night!
  • $15-$20 Any of the possibilities listed above and perhaps a newer hardcover from your sister’s wish-list, some fun socks, fandom tshirt, themed box, get creative!!
  • $25+ The sky’s the limit here, we just ask that you remember to reign it in a bit and remember the goal of this project is for cheer, and joy and forging positive relationships, not excessive gifts. Send those heartfelt letters!!

The Rules

Here is where things differ from last time, and where we go all “mean mommy” on ya. We ask that you pay attention because we are going to hold you to these standards with no exceptions. I am sure that you all realize that we absolutely do not have the time or patience to deal with nonsense and when I say that, it is coming from a place of love and experience as we did have some issues before. If you think this is too strict and “not fair” then we are sorry you feel that way, but we made some exceptions last round and spent lots of time chasing after people and yes, even kicking people out for neglecting to do their part. NOTE: There are no exceptions to these rules unless otherwise stated. Also, If you send back an unfinished questionnaire I will send it back to you. Thanks in advance for understanding.

  • You must “know” the hosts in order to join! The hosts are myself (@trippingbooks), Alyssa (@withthebanned), and Brittany (@bookaddictguide). What does “knowing” us entail? First and foremost, you should be following all three of us on Twitter, you should know our names, and if one of us reaches out to you, you should know who we are. It is embarrassing (for you) when we reach out to you and you do not know that we are the creators of the project to which you belong. (Seriously, there have been circumstances where we had to reach out to someone regarding the project and they didn’t know who we were. Incredibly embarrassing for them.) We are all pretty active on Twitter and really like chatting. Tweeting at us a few times saying “Hi! I want to join The Secret Sister Project!” does not count. We want to get to know you, there are three of us and our tastes range – this shouldn’t be too hard. Not to mention that we have been promoting this project for months and have been telling you to chat us up! We even wrote up a “get to know us” post to make it easier for all of you to chat us up! Please keep in mind that there is absolutely no “vouching” for people you know, so please do not try. Start forging those relationships with us, or you will not be allowed to participate.
  • You must be 18 or older to participate in The Secret Sister Project (The ONLY exception to this rule is If you are under 18 and have participated before, just please make a note of this when you send your sign-up email in two weeks)
  • You must actively use the hashtag #OTSPSecretSister to thank your sister during your time participating in The Secret Sister Project. It is worth mentioning this again, USE IT TO THANK YOUR SISTER!! We get TONS of emails asking things like “It says my sister’s package was delivered last week but I never heard anything?” This is unfair, creates more work for us and quite frankly is rude. Be courteous and classy, thank your sister. If you are not abiding by this, we will ask you to cease in participating. In addition to this “rule,” use the hashtag to interact with one another, ask questions, and answer questions put forth. We promise, this makes the whole project more fun!
  • If we have to reach out to you more than once to ask why your sister hasn’t yet received anything then you will be asked to cease in participating. If you are going to be late, tell us. You will not be in “trouble” if life gets in the way and you let us know. If we have to chase after you, then you will be asked to cease in participating.
  • If we contact you and ask if you sent something to your sister and you say yes but are unable to provide tracking for the package then you will be asked to cease in participating. We DO understand that life gets in the way and time gets away from you, so be honest. We DO NOT abide liars, so keep that tracking handy!
  • If you have not received anything by the end of the month then YOU must contact US. We are not going to be checking in with all of you throughout the month so it is imperative that you let us know if you are not receiving! Please do NOT ever feel uncomfortable reaching out to us to say that you didn’t receive something. We WANT to help you with this, you DESERVE to get cheer as you are sending cheer!! In this vein, we want to emphasize the “you” part of this requirement. We had several instances last round of people telling us that SOMEONE ELSE told THEM that no package was received from their secret sister, but WE had no idea. Confusing, right? This also winds up being frustrating for us, and it creates and extra unnecessary step in resolution. So again, PLEASE don’t ever feel bad or like a tattle tale for reaching out to us if a month goes by and you haven’t received anything yet.
  • If for any reason you find that you have to drop out of this project, please email us immediately. We will not judge. We will not ask why. We will simply thank you for informing us and then pair your sister off to someone else so she isn’t missing out.
  • You will be asked to provide the name and contact info (email addresses, please) of a “buddy” who will be willing to answer questions put forth by your sister. We are asking that you keep this to someone who is in the community and therefore will be easy to contact. Husbands/moms/sisters are not easy or comfortable to contact.
    • Your sister will contact this person to ask things such as “Can you ask Sally if she likes citrus or flowery smelling candles better?” This person can also say things to your sister such as “Hello Joan, Sally ended up buying a copy of “Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type” off of her wishlist so please do not purchase it.
    • This person will only act as YOUR buddy. They will not be acting as moderator for the hashtag or as a stand-in for any of the hosts.
  • You will be asked to provide a Goodreads or Amazon wish list that is specific to The Secret Sister Project, so start working on this now!
    • The wishlist much have 20 or more books on it and must contain new and older titles – SOME ARCs are fine but keep in mind your sister may not have access to these.
    • This list MUST contain books that you are not going to purchase for yourself. IF you simply cannot resist a title here or there then please let your “buddy” (see above) know PRIOR TO BUYING so that they can tell your sister – but please refrain from doing this.
    • Do not give anyone else access to this list. Not parents, husbands, friends, co-workers, secret santas…NO ONE. We had a lot of people buying things their sister already owned due to someone else buying off of this list, and it was a waste of money and went against our specified rules.
    • If your Goodreads profile is private, your sister cannot view your wishlist.
    • If you do not wish to make your Goodreads profile public then you may use another format for your wishlist, such as Amazon, or by providing one in the sign-up email.
  • You must answer ALL of the questions put forth in the sign-up email as well as be detailed and thorough. We will absolutely be sending emails back to you that we deem “incomplete.”
  • We are asking that you put a little more emphasis on the “pen pal” aspect this round.
    • This means if you have signed up for one of the higher price ranges, you should still send a letter here or there to your sister. This is one of the things people have been asking for, so be prepared.
  • Do not tweet or use the hashtag to ask for specific and/or luxurious items.
    • OK to say: “I love owls!” “OMG I am obsessed with sugar skulls at the moment!” “I just got engaged!!”
    • NOT OK to say: “Please send this to me…” while providing links to something expensive or “#OTSPSecretSister this toaster would look excellent in my new apartment!” Even linking to something you think is super cool while using the hashtag seems grabby, and believe me, we see what you’re doin’ there, so let’s not.
  • Do not tweet negativity while using the hashtag.
    • Things such as “Wow, I wish I knew if my sister got her package” or “I wish my sister would use the hashtag more” are statements that promote negative communication. We will see them, and we will call you out. If you have issues like this, reach out to the person your sister designated as her “buddy” or to one of us and we will do our best to solve any issues.
  • Do not send your sister ARCs unless you are also sending additional things to compensate as we know no one pays for ARCs and you are to abide the monetary limit.
  • Do not send packages straight from Amazon. We had some people who completely forgot about their sister and then sent things directly from Amazon to try and make up for it. This is not okay. The emphasis should be on the cheer and the thought that you are putting into your sister and her happiness.
  • If allowed to participate, you will be given the contact information for one of us. You are to contact that person, and that person only regarding any and all Secret Sister Project questions, or concerns. This will help us keep things more seamless, and will let us have divvy up the “work” a little better.

Anything else I should know?

Use the hashtag and interact with one another! The whole point is to bring positive feelings into the our community. Be as thorough as you can when answering the questions. There is no “writing too much” when answering these questions! Remember that this project is The Secret Sister Project, wouldn’t you expect your sister to know LOTS about you? The best advice I can give you is to be creative and keep in mind the entire reason for the project is NOT about gifts, but fostering a positive environmentIf you are looking for ideas, chat us up, we would love to help! Or ask your fellow sisters! I saw some fantastic monthly themed packages last round, and received a Loot Crate one month! We tweet from our own handles pretty frequently, but don’t forget to follow us all over at Gals on the Same Page)!

READ THIS

We can’t say this enough…please PLEASE only sign up if you are willing to send something monthly and give 100% to this project. Though we had very few issues the first round, each round proves to be more difficult and frustrating. Please recognize that this is a commitment and that there is someone out there relying on you to follow through. Not to mention the fact that the three of us have full time jobs and busy lives, we love hosting this project but absolutely loathe having to chase people down for being inconsiderate.

So how do I sign up?

The sign-up post with all questions that need to be answered will be posted on our blogs and promoted via Twitter starting on January 16. Do NOT send a sign-up email prior to seeing the post on January 16. If you do, we will delete the email and we will assume that you do not know how to follow directions and therefore cannot trust that you can handle being a part of this project. Sign-ups run for two weeks until January 30, so you will have plenty of time.

I hope that this post has been helpful to you, friends! If you still have any questions then please reach out on Twitter. If you are new to the project then I encourage you to use the hashtag to talk to your fellow sisters as they may have the answers you are looking for! Thanks for sticking with us and being so generous and kind!

Top Ten Books I’d Like to Find Under My Christmas Tree

Books are my favorite things to get as gifts any time of year, but there’s always something extra special about getting books for Christmas. Don’t know what it is, honestly. But I wouldn’t kick any of these bookish presents out of bed, nah mean?

Christmas tree

So, I had big plans to actually WRITE things about these books and why I want them, but alas. Christmas and life. I had to run a last-minute errand last night and then wrap presents for today and then HONK SHEW I was tired. But share with me! What books would you like under your Christmas tree?

On the Same Page | Hold Me Closer, Necromancer | Lish McBride

on the same page Hold Me Closer, Necromancer • Lish McBride

Sooo, for the record, we read HOLD ME CLOSER, NECROMANCER by Lish McBride in October. Whoops. But, life. We all really enjoyed the blend of paranormal creatures, macabre subject matter, and dark humor. I’m definitely looking forward to reading NECROMANCING THE STONE (I love these titles and the way Lish McBride incorporated song titles or lyrics into the chapter titles) and anything else Lish McBride writes.

Because I enjoyed HOLD ME CLOSER, NECROMANCER so much, it got me thinking about what other books I–or anyone–could read that have some of the same qualities and themes. So without any more ado, here are some readalikes for HOLD ME CLOSER, NECROMANCER!

book cover for Croak by Gina Damico

It’s been a little while since I read CROAK by Gina Damico, but I thought of it a lot while reading HOLD ME CLOSER, NECROMANCER. It has a very similar vibe: lots of humor, lots of death, a young person with a gift of death. If you liked HOLD ME CLOSER, NECROMANCER, this would be the next place I’d go.

book cover for Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

There are parts of HOLD ME CLOSER, NECROMANCER that are maybe a little scary-ish. ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD has that angle DOWN; it’s definitely scarier than Necromancer. Also, it’s got another young guy who slays demons and ghosts, very similar Sam. In fact, I think Sam and Cas would get along REALLY WELL.

Book cover The Monstrumologist Rick Yancey

I LOVED this book. It doesn’t have the necromancer angle, but it does have a really awesome historical fiction demon hunter. It’s creepy, kind of gruesome, and the characters are wonderfully vivid. I also love the structuring of this book, as if it’s recounting an old story. Big fan, need to read more.

Book cover Shiver Maggie Stiefvater

I’m going to admit right now that SHIVER is not the most amazing of Maggie Stiefvater’s work. However, there are werewolves in HOLD ME CLOSER, NECROMANCER that are kiiiiind of awesome, and these are the only werewolves that I’m really familiar with in my reading. Also, Maggie. So that’s a bonus.

If you guys have read HOLD ME CLOSER, NECROMANCER and know of any other books that would be good readalikes, share in the comments! I’d love to read more!

Don’t forget to check out Brittany and Alyssa‘s posts, too!

On the Same Page | Get to Know Us!

on the same pageHey there loves! As many of you know, one of the biggest “rules” that we are pushing is that we hosts must “know” you. A lot of you have asked what constitutes us “knowing” you, and that is a very valid question in this digital age! Basically, we want to have faith in those that we are allowing into our precious project. We want to be able to say, “Oh yeah, that is the girl who chatted with me about her search for a job as a Librarian.” Or, “She is the girl who was active in the hashtag despite not being able to join in on last round.” We look at your avi picture, we memorize your name, we make notations next to your sign-up in our spreadsheet. Full disclosure: when we go to our spreadsheet and one (OR TWO!!) of us has to notate, “no idea who she is, she doesn’t even follow me” we give some serious side eye. Are we looking for followers? Not in the least bit. Do we think that you ONE BILLION PERCENT should know who ALL THREE hosts are? OH. YES. We actually had a ridiculous amount of people this round thank two of us, not know that they were speaking to one of the hosts when we reached out to inquire about an issue, and so on. It is embarrassing for YOU when we bring this info back to base as the information on who we are is so readily available in a few different places. With that being said, we thought it would be helpful if we each wrote up a little “about me” so that you had some points to bring up when you chatted us up over the next month. HINT: THIS MEANS IT IS A VERY GOOD IDEA TO GO AND VISIT BRITT AND ALYSSA‘S POSTS, THERE MIGHT BE A QUIZ LATER. We put the question to twitter, and some of you had some things you just HAD to know, so let’s get goin’!

How did you get the idea for The Secret Sister Project?

Well, to be honest, Alyssa had the idea for it. She wanted to create something within our community that fostered warm fuzzies between strangers, and who doesn’t want to bring smiles to people’s faces? The prospect of cultivating and growing a supportive, warm group within the blogging community was really appealing to all three of us.

How did the three of you meet?

Of course, we first met each other online. For me, I met Brittany and Alyssa separately. I think one of my first conversations with Brittany was some emailing back and forth about how to convert to wordpress.org. Fascinating, I know. But she was, and remains, super sweet, and when I became friendly with Alyssa, the three of us just kind of meshed up. Speaking of Alyssa, we first met right around this time three years ago (OMG FRIENDIVERSARY!) I was her Secret Santa, and we just bonded over shared interests. Clicked pretty quickly. I would just probably die without them.

What is your favorite (or most popular) blog post that you have written?

I always have a hard time with these questions! If I had to pick a favorite post of mine, it would probably be one of my Top Ten Tuesdays, only because I LOVE making lists of books. I’m not all that creative when it comes to blog posts, which is something I always want to work on. One of my most popular blog posts is my review of CODE NAME VERITY. Not sure how this happened, but there you go.

List a few things that anyone can mention to get you talking!

Just a few, huh? Ok. Obviously books and reading. Outlander (books and show). Maggie Stiefvater. Cheese. Oreos. Food in general. Being from New Jersey. Shopping on Etsy. Friday Night Lights. Football. Baseball (YANKEES!) Harry Potter theories. Game of Thrones theories (R + L = J). I think Tom Brady knew about those footballs. That’s a good place to start, I think!

Which FRIENDS character would you have dated?

Hahahaha, so full disclosure, I’m not nearly as big a FRIENDS fan as Brittany and Alyssa are. I love it and think it’s a hilarious show, but I haven’t seen every episode, I can’t quote from it most of the time, and I’d say about 95% of FRIENDS jokes go over my head. That being said, I’ll have to say Ross. Joey is too…well, dumb, and Chandler would probably drive me nuts eventually. Ross is nerdy and adorable and weird.

Were Ross and Rachel really on a break?

I mean…I feel like I don’t know how to answer this properly. Technically yes? Emotionally no? I’m pleading FRIENDS ignorance here.

What is in your Zombie Apocalypse Kit?

UGH ZOMBIES. Something good to know about me: I hate them. I don’t like reading about them, I don’t want to watch TV shows about them, nothing. Hard pass. But I guess my zombie apocalypse kit would include…I don’t even know what kills zombies, but whatever that is. Canned goods. Velveeta cheese. Books. A light sweater. An umbrella in case it rains on me. Band-Aids. A flame-thrower. I have no idea if any of this is even reasonable.

Marry, Kiss, Kill: Loki, Thorne, Jamie Fraser

This is maybe the easiest question for the three of us to answer. It’s the easiest for me. Marry: Jamie Fraser, Kiss: Thorne, Kill: Loki. #sorrynotsorry

What genre do you enjoy reading the most?

Fantasy. Fantasy of any kind. Old ones, new ones, adult ones, young adult ones…doesn’t matter. If it’s got a map? Sign me up. If it’s got APPENDICES? Get me the smelling salts. The more in depth the world building, the better. Give me conspiracy theories, analyzation. I want to be totally absorbed, and I’m not turned off by the idea of reading books that top 500 pages.

Do you have interests outside of reading?

I do! I love sports, so I watch and follow a lot of that, but not basketball. I love the Yankees, Jets, and Rangers. I also root for the Giants when they aren’t playing the Jets. I never root for any teams from New England in any sport ever. I also love cooking and baking, and am always looking up recipes for things and wanting to try them out. One thing that I’ve always wanted to try to make is croissants. I love stationery and cards and often lament my inability to catch up on my correspondence (HA! FRIENDS JOKE!)

What is your favorite standalone book that you have read lately?

Hmmm…favorite recent standalone. I feel like this is hard for me, for a couple reasons. One, I LOOOOOVE series books. I love them. I’m not a person who can wait for all the books to come out before I start them. Two, often a lot of books that are supposed to be standalones turn into series. All that being said, my favorite recent standalone…UPROOTED by Naomi Novick. Favorite all-time standalone? Tie between THE SCORPIO RACES and THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE.

Who is your favorite or least favorite character in literature?

In terms of character archetypes, I guess I would go with…the conflicted hero. Or maybe the good guy with a bad name kind of thing. I like the conflicts. The characters that live in the gray areas but ultimately have good hearts.

Who is your favorite author that you have met in person?

I haven’t met many authors in person, honestly, aside from when I go to BEA and get books signed. Counting that–since I don’t really have any other choice–it was lovely to briefly meet Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo. Rick Riordan was also super nice.

What upcoming books are you excited for?

Wooo, boy. I’m really looking forward to THE LOVE THAT SPLIT THE WORLD, A COURT OF MIST AND FURY, BUILT, THE CROWN’S GAME, RIDERS, A STUDY IN CHARLOTTE…like, so many more.

Favorite gifs for reference?

OMG I love so many! Here are a few of the ones that always seem to either make me laugh or apply to my life:
