Blame the Books

Blame the Books

So, yes, another day comes and goes without a post of any substance here at Tripping Over Books. In fact, I only posted once this week, aside from today, but I have a reason. A good one. Two, actually. I think you’ll forgive me.

Blame the Books

Yup. I’ve been reading. GO FIGURE. I’ve been reading two AMAZING books. (Well, I just started A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES, but let’s be serious I’m going to love the shit out of it.) I just finished I’LL MEET YOU THERE by Heather Demetrios and I can’t stop thinking about it. I’ve already reread parts. I’m still sleeping with it on my bedside table. Buy it. Read it. Love it. And A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES is just sucking me in. Andi told me to tell you guys that Tamlin, Lucien, Feyre, and Rhys (who I actually haven’t met yet, but oh well) made me not post, and I have no problem passing the buck here. So, oops, no real posts from me until I’m done. I’m on a blogging pause for the next few days so I can read good–no, OUTSTANDING–books. We still cool? (If not, it’s totally Heather and Sarah’s faults. Like 100%.)

Does this happen to you guys? When reading just takes over and you can’t be bothered to blog or twitter or bathe? (I mean, I’m clean, but you get the picture.) This always strikes me as ironic somehow that I don’t want to post on my blog about books and reading because I’d rather be reading. That’s why I’m glad to not pressure myself to post all the time. It gives me more opportunities to READ THE THINGS, and when I’m not posting for large chunks of time, that’s usually what I’m doing instead: reading.

When was the last time this happened to you? Does it happen to you ON THE REGULAR like it happens to me? Somehow this became more than a “hey, just stopping by real fast to let you know that I’m not posting a review or anything because I’m reading good books” post to a “thinking cap” post. Sorry about that, friends. But I like this topic! Let’s chat about it!

Mini Reviews | Fantasy

Mini Reviews

So, I’ve never done mini reviews before. Kind of makes me feel like a cop out. Alas, I have a huge backlog of books that I read mostly over the summer, but some recently as well, that I want to review but either read so long ago that I can’t remember details, read but don’t think I could write a full review of, or…nope just those two. Primarily the former. But just because I didn’t get around to reviewing these books closer to when I finished reading them doesn’t mean that I don’t have SOME thoughts, and the thing that REALLY gets me is that I really enjoyed most of these books and I wish I’d been able to give them more attention. WAH FACE EMOJI. I’m glad to be shouting them out, though.

I have another batch of these that I’m going to work on for next week, but I thought I’d start with the fantasies. YAY!

Book cover Stray Elisa Sussman

I am grateful for my father, who keeps me good and sweet. I am grateful for my mother, who keeps her own heart guarded and safe. I am grateful for my adviser, who keeps me protected. I am grateful for the Path, which keeps me pure. Ever after.

Princess Aislynn has long dreamed about attending her Introduction Ball, about dancing with the handsome suitors her adviser has chosen for her, about meeting her true love and starting her happily ever after.

When the night of the ball finally arrives and Nerine Academy is awash with roses and royalty, Aislynn wants nothing more than to dance the night away, dutifully following the Path that has been laid out for her. She does not intend to stray.

But try as she might, Aislynn has never quite managed to control the magic that burns within her-magic brought on by wicked, terrible desires that threaten the Path she has vowed to take.

After all, it is wrong to want what you do not need. Isn’t it?

Stray: Four Sisters #1 by Elissa Sussman

I REALLY wanted to love STRAY, you guys. I did. It sounds so much like a book that I would love. And there were things about it that I enjoyed, and I’ll probably check out book 2, but when I tell you that my favorite parts were when Aislynn blows of steam by baking bread that sounded delicious, that should give you a hint about my general feelings. Nothing seemed to GRIP ME about STRAY. Aislynn didn’t, the romance didn’t, and the world-building was, frankly, messy. I was intrigued enough by it to be curious about what happens next. The fact that fairy godmothers like Aislynn supposedly lose their “loving hearts” making it impossible for them to feel romantic feelings seemed a little too pat, but very much in keeping with that old-school fairy tale vibe. I liked that Aislynn, despite losing her “loving heart,” still seemed to experience some of those forbidden feelings. The source of that is interesting to me. I’d also read more about the Evil Queen and how her story is related to Aislynn’s and what ramifications her plans will have on Aislynn.

The biggest bugaboo for me was the world-building. I found myself often a little confused and muddled. Sometimes the exposition would say one thing, and then something else would turn out to be true, or something would be explained and then later that explanation would be unraveled slightly. It just seemed very confusing. Which is a shame because it all seemed so promising. But in reality, the thing I was most excited about upon finishing STRAY is the bread recipe at the end.

Book cover Trial By Fire Josephine Angelini

This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying experiences that others in her hometown of Salem take for granted, which is why she is determined to enjoy her first high school party with her best friend and longtime crush, Tristan. But after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class, Lily wishes she could just disappear.

Suddenly, Lily is in a different Salem—one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruelest of them all is Lillian . . . Lily’s other self in this alternate universe.

What makes Lily weak at home is what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. In this confusing world, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can’t hope to shoulder alone and a love she never expected.

Trial by Fire: Worldwalker #1 by Josephine Angelini

I enjoyed TRIAL BY FIRE, friends. As you may know, anything vaguely Salem-ish is going to attract my attention because witches. This dystopian/alternate world Salem is really interesting, and I enjoyed the little bits of WTFery surrounding Lily and her other Salem self, Lillian, and the Crucibles themselves. I’m really intrigued by the fact that this alternate society is run by women who are basically witches. LOVE WITCHES. So that angle was really fun for me.

I also zipped through TRIAL BY FIRE. That happens sometimes: I’m enjoying a book, but maybe not LOVING IT, but I still can’t put it down. TRIAL BY FIRE was like that. Lots of action and characters in jeopardy and big things that we don’t fully understand yet. However, this was also one of those books where I found some holes in the world-building that irked me, and the pacing–while mostly awesome–sometimes made things seem too fast. Good thing I really liked Rowan. *wink wink*

Book cover The Kiss of Deception Mary E. Pearson

A princess must find her place in a reborn world.

She flees on her wedding day.

She steals ancient documents from the Chancellor’s secret collection.

She is pursued by bounty hunters sent by her own father.

She is Princess Lia, seventeen, First Daughter of the House of Morrighan.

The Kingdom of Morrighan is steeped in tradition and the stories of a bygone world, but some traditions Lia can’t abide. Like having to marry someone she’s never met to secure a political alliance.

Fed up and ready for a new life, Lia flees to a distant village on the morning of her wedding. She settles in among the common folk, intrigued when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deceptions swirl and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—secrets that may unravel her world—even as she feels herself falling in love.

Kiss of Deception: The Remnant Chronicles #1 by Mary E. Pearson

I LOOOVED KISS OF DECEPTION, you guys. The fantasy aspect was so interesting, although I’m not entirely convinced that this IS a fantasy. (OOOOOOH!) We shall see if my suspicions are well-founded or not! But I really enjoyed this one. A LOT. I loved Princess Lia and thought she was brave and smart. And ballsy for running away from a marriage that might save her kingdom because the prince is someone she doesn’t know and hasn’t met. She has enemies at home and enemies abroad, but you can never really tell which character is which (well, except for the nasty Chancellor. He’s obvs an enemy.)

There’s kind of a triangle in KISS OF DECEPTION, but not totally, and I liked how it all played out. I believe–if I remember correctly–that I had a feeling about the outcome of this but Mary Pearson did a pretty great job of concealing the truth until the reveal. I was never 100% sure, so that made KISS OF DECEPTION a really intriguing read. Definitely looking forward to book 2.

Book cover The Midnight Thief Livia Blackburne

Growing up on Forge’s streets has taught Kyra how to stretch a coin. And when that’s not enough, her uncanny ability to scale walls and bypass guards helps her take what she needs.

But when the leader of the Assassins Guild offers Kyra a lucrative job, she hesitates. She knows how to get by on her own, and she’s not sure she wants to play by his rules. But he’s persistent—and darkly attractive—and Kyra can’t quite resist his pull.

Tristam of Brancel is a young Palace knight on a mission. After his best friend is brutally murdered by Demon Riders, a clan of vicious warriors who ride bloodthirsty wildcats, Tristam vows to take them down. But as his investigation deepens, he finds his efforts thwarted by a talented thief, one who sneaks past Palace defenses with uncanny ease.

When a fateful raid throws Kyra and Tristam together, the two enemies realize that their best chance at survival—and vengeance—might be to join forces. And as their loyalties are tested to the breaking point, they learn a startling secret about Kyra’s past that threatens to reshape both their lives.

In her arresting debut novel, Livia Blackburne creates a captivating world where intrigue prowls around every corner—and danger is a way of life.

Midnight Thief: Midnight Thief #1 by Livia Blackburne

Friends, MIDNIGHT THIEF was a super fun debut. I enjoyed myself reading it. I had feelings, I enjoyed the world-building, I loved Kyra and her loyalty to her adopted family, and her relationship with Tristam, who is as awesome as a guy can be when one of the best words you can use to describe him is “honorable.” Face it, that’s kind of boring. I was also going to use “nice” and “decent.” But he’s great; the very best personification of those words.

Any mention of the word “assassin” immediately piques my interest, so the Assassins Guild is right up my alley. Their leader is dangerous and sneaky, and when Kyra gets caught up with him, you know things are not going to end well. The way everything came together with the reveals and such was great. The truth about Kyra was not so surprising to me, and sometimes the Demon Riders seemed…cheesy? Or something? They’re also pretty fierce, though, so I can get behind that for sure. So much is in ruins at the end of MIDNIGHT THIEF and I’m really looking forward to book 2.

Waiting on Wednesday Rebel Mechanics • Shanna Swendson

Book Cover Rebel Mechanics Shanna Swendson

A sixteen-year-old governess becomes a spy in this alternative U.S. history where the British control with magic and the colonists rebel by inventing.

It’s 1888, and sixteen-year-old Verity Newton lands a job in New York as a governess to a wealthy leading family—but she quickly learns that the family has big secrets. Magisters have always ruled the colonies, but now an underground society of mechanics and engineers are developing non-magical sources of power via steam engines that they hope will help them gain freedom from British rule. The family Verity works for is magister—but it seems like the children’s young guardian uncle is sympathetic to the rebel cause. As Verity falls for a charming rebel inventor and agrees to become a spy, she also becomes more and more enmeshed in the magister family’s life. She soon realizes she’s uniquely positioned to advance the cause—but to do so, she’ll have to reveal her own dangerous secret.

WHOA WHOA WHOA. GUYS. Does REBEL MECHANICS sounds fantastic, or what? I’m utterly, utterly fascinated by the sound of this book. Alternate history in which the Colonies never gain their independence from Britain (if the American Revolution even ever happens); REBELS, HELLO; this great steampunk angle; and WHAT IS VERITY’S DANGEROUS SECRET???? Also, can you see that tagline there on the cover? “All is fair in love and revolution”? STAHP. I’ve gone on before about how much I love reading about revolutions, and Shanna Swendson’s YA debut is hitting all of the right notes, and has mad potential. MY BODY IS READY.

REBEL MECHANICS comes out on July 14, 2015 from Farrar, Straus and Giroux

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

In December 1992, three groups of teenagers head to the theater to see the movie version of the famed Eons & Empires comic books. For Adam it’s a last ditch effort to connect with something (actually, someone, the girl he’s had a crush on for years) in his sleepy Florida town before he leaves for good. Passionate fan Sharon skips school in Cincinnati so she can fully appreciate the flick without interruption from her vapid almost-friends—a seemingly silly indiscretion with shocking consequences. And in suburban Chicago, Phoebe and Ollie simply want to have a nice first date and maybe fool around in the dark, if everyone they know could just stop getting in the way.

Over the next two decades, these unforgettable characters criss-cross the globe, becoming entwined by friendship, sex, ambition, fame and tragedy.

A razor-sharp, darkly comic page-turner, In Some Other World, Maybe sheds light on what it means to grow up in modern America.

I’m so excited to be participating in the blog tour for SAVE ME, a debut from Swoon Reads’ author Jenny Elliot! A paranormal debut with witches and WHALES?! How awesome is this?? (Awesome.) There are so many interesting things going on in SAVE ME, but for me, I was most intrigued by the whales. Who doesn’t love whales? They’re big and gorgeous and sometimes dangerous and are basically some of the closest things left on this planet to DINOSAURS. I MEAN. So in this vein, I wanted to share some cool things with you all about the whales in SAVE ME because they’re really important to the main character, Cara, as well as a very intriguing side story.

Secret Sister Project

Secret Sister Project Round Two!

Hey lovelies! We are here to announce round two of our Secret Sister Project! First, I want to say THANK YOU to everyone who made our trial run such a success. Honestly you guys blew me away with your generosity and ability to hold one another up on those cloudy days I really appreciate everyone’s time (and money) and cannot tell you how proud I am to be a part of this community! So let’s get into the logistics…For those of you who are new here, you can take a glance at our initial post to get an idea of what is going on here. To my peeps who are signing up again, we have made some significant changes to the whole project so please read the below very carefully before signing up!

The What

The Secret Sister project is essentially a cheer club. Think Secret Santa but all year round with less emphasis on big presents, and more thoughtful notes, cards, small somethings sent just to let your secret sister know that you are thinking about her!

The When

  • Sign-ups run January 12 – January 23
  • You will be paired up with your secret sister by January 30
  • This session will run from February 1 – July 31 (this means that your last something will be sent in July)

The What

You guys! The only “rule” we have is that before signing up, you must “know” at least one of us. Us being myself (@trippingbooks), Alyssa (@withthebanned), or Brittany (@bookaddictguide) and “knowing” one of us means that we must have spoken on Twitter or SOMETHING. We are just really concerned with someone not following through, and that would just make a bad time for everyone.

FAQs

What will I have to do if I sign up to be a secret sister?

This is a commitment, we can’t lie to you. By signing up to be a secret sister you are promising to send at least one small card OR gift to your secret sister a month. It is very important that you don’t sign up for this unless you are willing to follow through. Please think of how sad (and unfair) it would be for someone to be working hard to make their secret sister feel special and not receiving anything themselves! In addition, we are asking that you PLEASE use the hashtag #OTSPSecretSister on Twitter and Instagram to interact with all of us. Most of us used this hashtag to ask questions and get to know our sisters better! Also, (and this is most important) use this hashtag to THANK YOUR SISTER! One of the biggest complaints we had about round one was the lack of thank yous received!

Do I have to send presents?

No, you don’t have to send anything big, this really is meant to be more of a cheering up sort of club. However, in the six month period we will be going through Valentine’s Day, Easter, and maybe your secret sister’s birthday! It is encouraged that you send one or two presents during these six months (think a book from their wish list, some Easter candy, or if you’re feeling really fancy, some flowers for their birthday!) Honestly, this is as fun as you make it!

Do we have to remain secret?

No, though that is part of the fun! Just leave your name off of the card or box you are sending if you want to remain secret, and reveal yourself whenever you wish! It is entirely up to you! (If you are looking for some tips on how to remain secret -l ike if you want to send an e-book, for example, we can help ya out!)

Anything else I should know?

Use the hashtag and interact with one another! The whole point is to bring positive feelings into the our bookish community. Try and answer ALL of the questions below and be as thorough as you can, the more you share, the easier it is for your sister to spoil you! The best advice I can give you is to be creative. My secret sister handmade me bookmarks featuring my favorite dudes (HELLOOO CHRIS PRATT) and it was honestly the best thing I received. I saw some people exchanging letters back and forth, and even some baked goods. If you are looking for ideas, chat us up, we would love to help! We tweet from our own handles pretty frequently, but don’t forget to follow us all over at @galsonthesamepg)!

READ THIS

We can’t say this enough…please PLEASE only sign up if you are willing to send something monthly and give 100% to this project. We had very few hiccups the first time around but the problems we encountered were people neglecting to send something to their sister in a timely manner. First, If for any reason you find that you have to drop out of this project, please email us immediately. We will not judge. We will not ask why. We will simply thank you for informing us and then pair your sister off to someone else so she isn’t missing out. Second, if you have not received anything by the last week of the month you must contact us. We are not going to be checking in with all of you throughout the month so it is imperative that you let us know if you are not receiving!

So how do I sign up?

Here is where things differ from last time…we need you to answer the following questions and then email them to onthesamepagesecretsister AT gmail DOT com:

The Boy Next Door Blog Tour | Guest Post + Giveaway

The Boy Next Door

Book Cover The Boy Next Door Katie Van Ark

Maddy Spier has been in love with the boy next door forever. As his figure skating partner she spends time in his arms every day. But she’s also seen his arms around other girls—lots of other girls.

Gabe can’t imagine skating with anyone but Maddy, and together they have a real chance at winning some serious gold medals. So, he’s determined to keep thinking of her like a sister. After all, he’s never had a romantic relationship that lasted for more than two weeks.

But when their coach assigns a new romantic skating program, everything changes. Will this be the big break that Maddy’s been hoping for or the big breakup that Gabe has always feared?

Guys, I’m really excited for today’s post, from Katie Van Ark, the debut author of THE BOY NEXT DOOR. Everyone say hi! *waves to Katie*

When I heard that THE BOY NEXT DOOR was basically a YA The Cutting Edge, I got VERY excited, so I obviously couldn’t say no to a stop on the blog tour! (Thanks, Swoon Reads for including me!) I really wanted to know if all of the figure skating in the book was based on Katie’s own experience or if she had to do research on it. So I asked her! Here’s what she said:

I’ve spent over ten years now competing in figure skating and I drew heavily from my own training and competition experiences to create Maddy and Gabe’s story. I gave Maddy my absolute love of everything ice. I gave Gabe my own fear of jumping. I even took a pair test to help accurately convey the experience of skating as a pair.

The coolest thing about my own figure skating story, though, is that I didn’t start skating until I was an adult. Growing up, I always wanted to skate but my hometown didn’t have a rink. My father helped me build an outdoor rink one year in our backyard but with fickle lakeshore temperatures, it was a labor of love and we weren’t able to skate much on it. It was also pretty small – about ten steps and you were at the end of it.

After college, an old friend and I were at her New Year’s Eve party lamenting how out of shape we’d gotten since our swim team days and we made a New Year’s resolution to try a new sport together. We signed up for a skating class. I thought maybe I’d finally learn to do crossovers and stop without crashing into the boards. When our instructor taught us how to do a little two foot spin at the end of our first eight week session, we were hooked. When she told us that U.S. Figure Skating had an adult competition track with its own national competition, we had yet another resolution.

Like Maddy, my friend had a lot more natural talent – she kicked my butt at every jumping contest we ever had. But I was determined and dedicated and we both made it to several national competitions. Now that I have two little girls at home, I don’t get to train the way that I used to but I have a great group of ladies that I skate together with on a synchronized skating team.

January is National Skating Month and a lot of rinks celebrate with free skating sessions and sometimes even free lessons, so if you’ve ever wanted to experience Maddy and Gabe’s world in real life, check it out!

Thanks, Katie!

Because the lovely folks at Swoon Reads are fabulous, and because THE BOY NEXT DOOR is really cute, they’re giving away a copy to one lucky winner! HUZZAH! Few rules: Must live in the US/Canada, be 13 or older, and respond to my “YAY, YOU WON!” email within 24 hours.
