Swoon Reads Tour | Event Recap + Giveaway

Swoon ReadGuys, this post is horrifically late and I feel like such a heel, I can’t even tell you. The lovely folks at Swoon Reads asked me to interview the authors for the last Swoon Reads event at the Barnes & Noble in East Brunswick and it was SO MUCH FUN! But then, life. I’ve barely posted for two weeks. WAHHH! The great thing, though, is that meeting Sandy Hall (A LITTLE SOMETHING DIFFERENT), Temple West (VELVET), Kimberly Karalius (LOVE FORTUNES AND OTHER DISASTERS), and Katie Van Ark (THE BOY NEXT DOOR) was super! We talked about books and writing and pastimes and favorite things and they were lovely.

So I wound up interviewing the panelists before the event started and then moderating as well. I don’t remember too many of the questions from the moderation portion of the evening, but there were awesome young people there who asked great questions and were totally into it and I loved them.

The one thing I DO remember from the event questions was some great news about all of the upcoming projects! Sandy Hall has a book coming out this fall, ALL SIGNS POINT TO YES (YAY FOR THIS), Temple West is working on the sequel to VELVET (YAY FOR THIS TOO), Katie is working on something sekret (very exciting), and Kimberly announced some awesome news that she’s going to be writing a sequel/companion book to LOVE FORTUNES AND OTHER DISASTERS! Huzzah!

Now, a rundown of the pre-event interview!

Q: What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

Sandy loves watching TV (think Netflix binging), and is currently obsessing over Criminal Minds. Katie likes figuring skating and learning cool stuff under the guise of story research and recently took archery lessons with her hubs. Kimberly, the lucky duck, lives very close to Disney World and her family has annual passes, so she goes there ALL. THE. TIME. Epcot is her favorite park. Temple paints (check out her Instagram, pls) and loves going to the movies because she craves being creative even when she isn’t able to read (usually while she’s writing) and movies are like books for both sides of her brain.

Q: What’s the most impactful book you’ve ever read, as a reader or writer? (No, I didn’t help them at all with this question.)

Kimberly cited Francesca Lia Block in general, but her book ECHO in particular because it was the first time she encountered magical realism. Katie said that the books that inspired her own writing the most were CATCHING JORDAN by Miranda Kenneally and the Perfect Chemistry series by Simone Elkeles. For her personally, THE SCORPIO RACES (GUH. I die.) Temple read a TON of Nancy Drew (fist pump, Nancy) and The Hardy Boys growing up, so those books had a huge impact on her reading. Sandy said ELEANOR & PARK because that book inspired her to evoke the same feelings she felt while reading in her own readers.

Q: What was the first seed of your story?

Kimberly told this awesome story about how, in college, the ratio of girls to boys was in favor of the boys BIG TIME, and it often resulted in dating people you wouldn’t normally date, so her friends came up with this elaborate future for themselves where they were all really glamorous spinsters. This whole scenario got her wondering why a teenager would be concerned with becoming a spinster on account of their being so young and having so much time ahead of them, and then the love fortunes and town evolved from there.

Q: Where were you/what were you doing when you first found out your book was going to be published?

Sandy was shoveling snow, Temple was babysitting, and Kimberly and Katie were both at work.

Q: How much, if anything, from your first draft remains in your published book?

For Temple, on a basic plot level, everything. On a structural level, nothing. VELVET used to have a ton of stream-of-conciousness, run-on sentences because she loved them, but as her writing style changed, so did her book (VELVET took 6 years to write). LOVE FORTUNES AND OTHER DISASTERS had lots of shuffling around. Sandy said it’s about 50/50, and Katie said about 75/25. Removing things and adding scenes

Q: How long could you remain unplugged before totally losing it?

Temple went 4 and a half months without a phone when she was studying abroad at Oxford. Kimberly doesn’t think she’d last very long because she uses the internet constantly while writing. Sandy went longer on this tour than ever without internet, but probably not more than 24 hours. Katie often takes vacations with her family out in the woods and is without devices for days at a time. I (well, all of us) couldn’t believe Temple lasted so long without a phone.

Q: Favorite fairytale or or folk tale?

Temple immediately responded with Beauty and the Beast. Katie is also partial to Beauty and the Beast, especially the movie version because of the library–of course. Kimberly loves Thumbelina, especially the original Hans Christian Andersen version. Sandy doesn’t do fairytales. (GASP! It’s ok.)

Q: What’s your least favorite thing about being on tour?

Touring is hard! Temple wasn’t getting a ton of sleep, so that was no fun. Kimberly had to figure out how to not get burned out from too much flying. Sandy doesn’t like flying really at all and doesn’t like being away from home. Katie said that she would love to be able to spend more time in the cities where they stopped, and also hated that they could only bring a carry on with them, which prevented her from buying lots of books on the road. (Understandable.)

Q: Best part of being on tour?

FOOD.

Q: Is there a particular scene in your book that you’re really proud of, either because you worked really hard on it or because it wasn’t clicking for a long time and finally fell into place?

Temple said that Holly made her add two scenes, but they are some of her favorites “because of THINGS.” They were wonderful to write and read and it was like a treat working with them because she added them at the end. Katie was particularly fond of her Halloween scene (you’ll have to read THE BOY NEXT DOOR for more details!). Kimberly’s favorite scene was when Fallon and Sebastian had their first talk because it was really fun to write. Sandy is really partial to all of her party scenes. Since she’s from New Jersey and didn’t live too far from Rutgers, she basically pictured college parties there and incorporated them into A LITTLE SOMETHING DIFFERENT. Then she said she could take us all to the exact spots she was thinking of when she wrote her party scenes.

I loved talking to these awesome ladies! And bonus? Their books are adorable and incredibly fun to read, and so thanks to the excellent folks at Swoon Reads, I’m giving away copies of each of their books! YAYY! You must be 13 or older to enter and live in the US. All good? Great! ENTER AWAY! Giveaway ends at midnight on June 12!

Sorcerer to the Crown: Sorcerer Royal #1 • Zen Cho

Book cover Sorcerer to the Crown Zen Cho

In this sparkling debut, magic and mayhem clash with the British elite…
The Royal Society of Unnatural Philosophers, one of the most respected organizations throughout all of England, has long been tasked with maintaining magic within His Majesty’s lands. But lately, the once proper institute has fallen into disgrace, naming an altogether unsuitable gentleman—a freed slave who doesn’t even have a familiar—as their Sorcerer Royal, and allowing England’s once profuse stores of magic to slowly bleed dry. At least they haven’t stooped so low as to allow women to practice what is obviously a man’s profession…

At his wit’s end, Zacharias Wythe, Sorcerer Royal of the Unnatural Philosophers and eminently proficient magician, ventures to the border of Fairyland to discover why England’s magical stocks are drying up. But when his adventure brings him in contact with a most unusual comrade, a woman with immense power and an unfathomable gift, he sets on a path which will alter the nature of sorcery in all of Britain—and the world at large…

Soooo, exsqueeze me? I love the sound of SORCERER TO THE CROWN. It’s got historical fiction elements, fantasy elements, fairy elements, and a dragon on the cover. (Not sure how that last fits, but DRAGON, so I’ll go with it.)

I always love reading books about worlds on the verge of collapse. Something’s gone wrong, and no one understands how or why. I like the mystery of it, the slowly unraveling suspense. Zen Cho’s debut has so many things that I love to read about. The only thing that is less than awesome? I have to keep waiting until September to read it.

SORCERER TO THE CROWN comes out on September 1, 2015 from Ace Books

Top Ten Books I’ll Have in My Beach Bag This Summer

Reading outside near any body of water is always high on my list of things to do in the summer. Sure, sometimes I can’t get the positioning right so that my book doesn’t block the sun that would hit my neck, thus resulting in reader’s tan (you all know this). But that never stops me from packing at least one book and my kindle whenever I’m hitting the sand or the pool. This summer, my beach bag is going to have these books (and probably lots of others) stashed away inside. Can’t go ANYWHERE without my books!

Top Ten Tuesday Beach Bag

THE HEART OF BETRAYAL: THE REMNANT CHRONICLES #2 • Mary E. Pearson | I was a big fan of the first book in this series, THE KISS OF DECEPTION, so I’m definitely looking forward to where things go. I need to reread book 1, though, I think.

TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE: TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE #1 • Jenny Han | I got a copy of this book from my OTSP Secret Sister and I’m stoked to read it. I really enjoyed Jenny Han’s Summer series, and I’ve heard good things about this one! Contemps are always good books to have in your beach bag.

THE ROYAL WE • Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan | GUYSSS, this sounds so adorable and swoony and I love the cover so much and I can’t wait to read it. I looove the British monarchy and am a big Anglophile, so this one appeals to me on so many levels.

COURT OF FIVES: COURT OF FIVES #1 • Kate Elliott | I’ve never read any books by Kate Elliott, but this one sounds legit. Some people might think a fantasy is a bit heavy for a beach bag, but not me! BRING IT.

HOLD ME LIKE A BREATH: ONCE UPON A CRIME FAMILY #1 • Tiffany Schmidt | I’m intrigued by this one. The black market for organs? EEP.

REBEL MECHANICS • Shanna Swendson | WORD. Historical fiction steampunk spies during the American Revolution? STOP.

TANGLED WEBS: TANGLED WEBS #1 • Lee Bross | Another historical fiction, this time in England, also about spies and secrets and dangerous-sounding stuff. Getting a little serious up in my beach bag this summer!

HEIR TO SEVENWATERS: SEVENWATERS #4 • Juliet Mariller | So, talk about serious, guys. I’m going to be reading this one with Alyssa eventually, so I’m going to assume that means this summer.

MY LIFE NEXT DOOR • Huntley Fitzpatrick | I want to reread this book before THE BOY MOST LIKELY TO comes out in August. Plus, I miss Jase and Samantha and their relationship.

THE BOY MOST LIKELY TO • Huntley Fitzpatrick | SUUUUPER excited to read about Tim, you guys.

THE FILL-IN BOYFRIEND • Kasie West | I’ve actually only read one book by Kasie West, but it was adorable so I’m generally excited for all her books now. Is this not perfect for reading while soaking up the sun and trying not to get sand stuck to your sunscreen? I agree.

Nookish No. 2

Nookish

Woo! Time for the second edition of Nookish, friends! I’m going all fancy on you this month with a Royal Nook. Isn’t it so pretty? Like, I want to close the curtains and curl up in it and just BE ALONE WITH MY BOOKS. Except for when my servants come to feed me grapes and refill my wine goblet. Then I can be interrupted.

Nookish Royal

So, in truth, I’ve only read one of the books I’m shouting out here–THE GOOSE GIRL by Shannon Hale. It’s one of my favorites. But the other two fit the theme perfectly, I think, and are two books I’ve been wanting to read…eventually.

THE PRINCESS DIARIES by Meg Cabot | I’ve seen this movie, friends, but I’ve never read the books. YES, I KNOW. I worry a teensy bit that this might be a little too twee or something, but that’s never really stopped me before.

THE ROYAL WE by Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan | Lots of people have been reading this one lately, and it sounds super adorbs. Nothing like a little royal romance! Also, I do love the cover.

THE GOOSE GIRL by Shannon Hale | I ADORE THIS BOOK. The language is lyrical, the setting is evocative, and the characters are well-crafted and endearing. It sometimes reads more like a middle grade than a YA, but it has such an amazing fairy tale vibe that I sometimes forget it isn’t an old tale, but a newer one.

The Wolf Wilder • Katherine Rundell

Book cover The Wolf Wilder Katherine Rundell

A girl and the wolves who love her embark on a rescue mission through Russian wilderness in this lyrical tale from the author of the acclaimed Rooftoppers and Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms.

Feo’s life is extraordinary. Her mother trains domesticated wolves to be able to fend for themselves in the snowy wilderness of Russia, and Feo is following in her footsteps to become a wolf wilder. She loves taking care of the wolves, especially the three who stay at the house because they refuse to leave Feo, even though they’ve already been wilded. But not everyone is enamored with the wolves, or with the fact that Feo and her mother are turning them wild. And when her mother is taken captive, Feo must travel through the cold, harsh woods to save her—and learn from her wolves how to survive.

From the author of Rooftoppers, which Booklist called “a glorious adventure,” and Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms, which VOYA called “a treasure of a book,” comes an enchanting novel about love and resilience.

So guys. All the things about this book. Russian wilderness. Wolves. Woods. A girl with wolves as pets. I can’t lie, I’m a little nervous about the possibility of crying while reading THE WOLF WILDER. What if one of Feo’s pet wolves dies? Or what is she has to shoo him away like Arya did with Nymeria? WAAHHHH! But I’m getting ahead of myself. I’m definitely going to read this book. I don’t know how I couldn’t. The bond that Feo seems to have and nurture with her wolves is, like, giving me chest pains from how touching it sounds. CANNOT WAIT.

THE WOLF WILDER comes out on August 25, 2015 from Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Excerpt from SOME KIND OF NORMAL

“You got any?” he asked.

“Any what?”

“Tattoos?”

“Me?” I had to laugh at that. Wow. Before last year that would have been grounds for major punishment. Heck, up until my senior year, I hadn’t been allowed to wear lip gloss. Now I wasn’t so sure that my mom would even notice, and since I avoided my dad whenever I could…

“No,” I said, shaking my head. “My skin is untouched.”

His eyes widened a bit, and I felt heat creep up my neck. Great. Now I was blushing again.

“Untouched,” he said with that lopsided smile that made my stomach dip. “I like that.”

“You do?”

“Yep. A clean slate. There’s something almost poetic about that, you know? Tragic too. How many people get a do–over?”

Trevor reached for my hand, and though my first instinct was to snatch it back, his long fingers enveloped mine before I had the chance. He turned my hand over so that my palm faced up and then traced the little blue lines that ran down my wrist.

I can’t lie. It felt weird and good, and my heart took off once more, so fast that I was surprised he couldn’t hear it.

“This is…kind of…like ink,” he said, his words a little slow as if he was thinking hard. “But it’s alive.”

He glanced up again, and all I could do was nod before my eyes dropped to his hand. Mine was still there, small and pale next to his large palm and tanned skin. I saw the thin blue veins that ran down my wrist, the ones that carried blood from my heart, electrifying my cells and feeding my body.

His thumb rested just beneath my pulse, and I swallowed thickly. Crap, he was going to feel how fast it was, and that would be embarrassing.

“Your fingers are rough.” I blushed harder and thought that there was no way I could sound any more like an idiot. Not even if I was trying.

“Yeah,” he answered. “It’s from playing guitar. I practice a lot so my calluses are nice and strong.”

“I used to play piano.”

Wow. Good comeback. I guess it was better than a clarinet or trombone, but really. Dork much?

…Had he always looked this intense?

“What?” he asked. He smiled again and I thought that on a scale of one to ten, his smile was a total eleven. “You’re into the classics. That’s cool. Didn’t picture that.”

“Really. What exactly did you picture?” Shoot. Did I really want to hear this?

“I don’t know. PBS and that Jane Austen?”

Okay. First off, I was impressed that he knew who Jane Austen was, and secondly…he knew who Jane Austen was!

I dropped my eyes, because I was pretty sure that my cheeks were as red as the roses planted just outside the library. Trevor Lewis wasn’t anything like what I thought he’d be. He wasn’t stupid and he wasn’t arrogant. He wasn’t slow or weird.

He seemed pretty normal to me.

You know, for a guy with tattoos and blue hair.

SOUNDS SO GOOD, RIGHT?! This book is definitely worthy of a prime spot on your TBRs, friends. You’ll love Trevor and Everly and their slowly building relationship. These Shallow Graves • Jennifer Donnelly

Book cover These Shallow Graves Jennifer Donnelly

Set in gilded age New York, These Shallow Graves follows the story of Josephine Montfort, an American aristocrat. Jo lives a life of old-money ease. Not much is expected of her other than to look good and marry well. But when her father dies due to an accidental gunshot, the gilding on Jo’s world starts to tarnish. With the help of a handsome and brash reporter, and a young medical student who moonlights in the city morgue, Jo uncovers the truth behind her father’s death and learns that if you’re going to bury the past, you’d better bury it deep.

WORD. So, I’ve read two books of Jennifer Donnelly’s: one was amazing (REVOLUTION) and one was not so much (DEEP BLUE). I’ve had A NORTHERN LIGHT on my TBR for eons. Basically what I’m saying is, even with that blip (for me) with the mermaids, I’m still incredibly excited about Jennifer’s books, especially the ones that are more historical fiction. That seems to be her strong suit, and so HELLO, THESE SHALLOW GRAVES.

First of all, love the time period. Second of all, love the mysterious past factor. Third of all, love the cover. The secrets and the the fact that Jo seems to get at least mildly acquainted with the morgue really intrigue me. I CANNOT WAIT for THESE SHALLOW GRAVES.

BEA Part of It

BEA part of it

Guys, I’m really stoked to be taking part in this year’s BEA Part of It feature, headed up by the lovely Estelle at Rather Be Reading. YAY! This will be my 5th year going to Book Expo. I CANNOT BELIEVE IT BUT IT’S TRUE. The first time I went was the same year I graduated with my MLIS–2010. Wow, guys, I’m kind of flabbergasted that I’ve been to BEA for the last 5 years!

Anyway, I’m not a city dweller myself, but I am a Jersey Girl, so I get into the city every now and then. When I go into the city (this is a Jersey thing, maybe, but I never call New York City anything other than “the city”), it’s usually for specific events. THANKFULLY, a lot of those things are also things YOU guys can do if you’re up for it after a long day of doing awesome bookish stuff. So! Here we go–my tips for awesome post-BEA activities!

BEA part of it

So I know that maybe this one is going to be tough to pull off, but half the time I’m in the city, I’m at a sporting event. Specifically, Yankees games. They’re super fun ways to experience the vibe of New York, have a great time, sit outside, have a few drinks, and scream your head off. (If you want to boo the home team, that’s up to you.) GOOD TIMES. Best way to get to Yankee Stadium from the general BEA area around midtown is the subway. DUN DUN DUNNNN. I feel like people are terrified of the subway, and I can understand it. If you don’t use it all the time, it’s intimidating. But all you need to do is get thyself to Penn Station, which is on 34th & 8th Avenues–only a few walking blocks from the Javits Center. Take the Queens-bound E subway train to 7th avenue and transfer to the B subwayD subway subway line to 161 St-Yankee Stadium. Just look for the people in Yankees jerseys. Follow them. Also, bonus of the subway? SUPER CHEAP, and at the end you get this:

BEA part of it

BEA part of itI know you guys will be spending all day around bookish things, but in the interest of keeping with the theme, one of the most AMAZING places I’ve ever visited in the city was a place I’ve only been once! The Strand bookstore. It’s a book-lover’s DREAM in there. Used books of all kinds, awesome swag (like the tote pictured below), and just, like, the SMELL of books. I could spend hours in there.

Extra bonuses? There’s some great places to eat around The Strand. Last year, Alyssa and I got cereal milk at Momofuku Milk Bar after we ate dinner at this really cool Italian place, Vapiano. All three places are within walking distance of the bookstore.

BEA part of it

BEA part of it If you guys don’t get into the city often, or don’t live in this area at all, I can’t stress to you enough the AWESOMENESS of going to see a play on Broadway. If I’m not in the city going to a sporting event, I’m usually going to see a play. Well, usually a musical because they’re super fun. The last one I saw was Aladdin and, DUH, it was spectacular. PLUS! The theater is in Times Square, which is not a place you should overlook if this is your first time visiting NYC. Yeah, it’s crowded, but it’s got great energy, lots of things to catch your eye, and is only about 4 blocks from M&M’S World. Best store.

BEA part of it

So there’s a few things for you guys to do while you’re exploring New York City! But trust me: There’s SO MUCH GOING ON! You won’t struggle to find things to do. You’ll probably struggle to choose!
