Top Ten 2014 Reads I Didn’t Get To Last Year

This happens to me every year, friends. I always have such high hopes for myself and my reading plans each year, but inevitably, even with books that I’m really excited to read, I miss a few. So this list was pretty easy for me. In fact, the only hard part was keeping it to ten books. So, you know, I didn’t.

Book cover Jackaby William Ritter Book Cover Compulsion Martina Boone Book Cover The Perilous Sea Sherry Thomas Book Cover The Infinite Sea Rick Yancey Book Cover Zac & Mia A.J. Betts Book Cover Ask Again Later Liz Czukas Book Cover Dreamer's Pool Juliet Marillier Book Cover The Hero's Guide to Being an Outlaw Christopher Healy Book Cover Winterspell Claire Legrand Book Cover A Thousand Pieces of You Claudia Gray Book Cover Something Real Heather Demetrios Book Cover The Blood of Olympus Rick Riordan

So what do you guys think? Can I get through these books this year? It’s my goal. Like, a priority. I’m going to print out this list and check books off as I read them. I WILL TOO DO IT!

 Top Ten Books of 2014

So my computer is being a TOOL and wouldn’t let me do fun graphic things like I wanted to for one of my FAVORITE LISTS OF EVER. I always look forward to this Top Ten Tuesday. I’m constantly in a state of picking the books that will be on this list as I read throughout the whole year. As you can see, I had a hard time narrowing it down. I’ll try and update my post tomorrow with more WORDS about why I LOOOOOVED THESE BOOKS, but for now, it’s bedtime. WAH!

Top Ten New to Me Authors

This was a good year for me in terms of reading new authors’ work! HUZZAH! I’ve found some new favorite authors this year, which is always exciting. I’ve tried to keep authors with only one book under their belts because obviously they would be new to me, but there was one that made a HUGE impression and I couldn’t leave her off. Other than that, I’ve got some backlists to attack!

Top Ten Tuesday new authors

Cora Carmack | I’ve blown through two of Cora’s series this year, the two books that are out in the Rusk University series, as well as the Losing It series. Big fan all around. Her YA debut sounds different but interesting so I’ll probably check it out.

Robin McKinley | I JUST finished my first book of hers, even though I’ve got several on my TBR because she sounds very much like an author I would love forever, SUNSHINE. I liked it lots and can’t wait to dive into some of her more fantasy-sounding titles.

Jill Shalvis | I read a LOT of contemps this year, guys, and way more adult contemps than normal. But I was just craving them, you know? I’ve heard sooo many great things about the Lucky Harbor series, and the first three books didn’t disappoint. I’m looking forward to more! (Which is good since there’s, like, a million of them.)

Scott Lynch | OMG THIS GUY. I am head over heels in love with the Gentleman Bastards. ASS. OVER. TEAKETTLE. I’ve got book three ready to go whenever I can carve out the time and I can’t wait. His story and his world-building and his bromances and his SWEARING. UGH. Love him.

Ellie Marney | Ok, so Ellie Marney has just one book out so far in the US, but I’ve read the first two books in her Every series that have already been published in Australia and, friends, I AM BLOWN AWAY. I love Mycroft and Watts. I’m talking excessive levels of adoration here. They’re worth it though. Consider this my official peer pressure to all of you to read these books.

Sarah Rees Brennan | UNSPOKEN, my first of Sarah’s books, was so much fun: humorous, creepy, swoony, and full of complications. I’ve also been meaning to read her Demon’s Lexicon series for a while because it always reminded me of one of my favorite shows, Supernatural. Have you guys read her short story, The Queen of Atlantis? OMG it’s AMAZING and free. I’m looking forward to finishing the Lynburn Legacy and reading more from Sarah!

Claire Legrand | As a constant champion of middle grade awesomeness, I loved THE CAVENDISH HOME FOR BOYS AND GIRLS. The perfect amount of precociousness and creeps. I’m REALLY looking forward to WINTERSPELL because Nutcracker.

Jennifer Donnelly | I started this year by reading my first Jennifer Donnelly book, REVOLUTION, and I was like, “OMG AMY you suck for not reading this sooner.” It was amazing, and much darker than I thought it would be. But SO EXCELLENT. I need to find more YA books set during the French Revolution. LEGIT. RECOMMENDATIONS, PLEASE.

Fiona Paul / Paula Stokes | New authors times 2 slash times 1! I know my math is weird, but just go with it. Two authors, one…person. At any rate, I read my first books by both of these authors this year, and I enjoyed them both tremendously.

Erin Bow | I’ve hesitated reading some of Erin Bow’s books because I sometimes see meh reviews for them, but I am SO GLAD that I read SORROW’S KNOT. Talk about new author success! I adored it. So atmospheric and dark and lovely. I’ll be the first to admit that not everyone will love it, but it just completely killed me. Definitely looking forward to more of her books.

Top Ten Tuesday | 2015 Reads I Can’t Wait For

Top Ten TuesdayTop Ten 2015 Reads I Can’t Wait For

Friends, I had a very hard time stopping myself from letting this list get a little out of hand. I can’t lie. Ah, well. Not a bad thing, right? That just means that 2015 is going to be LEGIT for books. CANNOT WAIT. In no particular order except the one I wrote them down in on my little note today at work!

A Court of Thorns and Roses: A Court of Thorns and Roses #1 | Sarah J. Maas

May 5, 2015 • Bloomsbury Children’s

DUH. I about died when I saw these ARCs floating around, and the buzz I’m hearing from those lucky people who’ve read it already is only making me die more. Kind of need this one nowish.

I Was Here | Gayle Forman

January 27, 2015 • Viking Juvenile

I will perpetually look forward to Gayle Forman’s books. They’re contemps with romance and intense emotions and deep insights into basically life.

Six of Crows: The Dregs #1 | Leigh Bardugo

October 8, 2015 • Henry Holt & Co.

More books in the Grisha world? Well, don’t mind if I do. Also, the blurb says that this is Ocean’s 11 meets Game of Thrones. The Game of Thrones comparisons with every fantasy rarely seem to live up to that specific hype, but that’s not bad. I like books to be their own thing! That being said, YES TO THOSE TWO THINGS.

The Penderwicks in Spring: Penderwicks #4 | Jeanne Birdsall

March 24, 2015 • Knopf Books for Young Readers

I LOVE THE PENDERWICKS. It takes Jeanne Birdsall a few years to write each one, which makes each new release that much more of a gift. Plus, this one takes place five years in the future and is told from Batty’s point of view. BATTY. ADORBS. Also, I believe there is a war veteran in it. STAHP.

The Sword of Summer: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #1 | Rick Riordan

October 6, 2015 • Disney Hyperion

Listen. All you have to say to me is “Rick Riordan” and “Asgard” and someone is going to have to resuscitate me. I am salivating for this.

Shadow Scale: Seraphina #2 | Rachel Hartman

March 10, 2015 • Random House Children’s

WORD I’ve been waiting for this one for so long! I’m going to need to reread SERAPHINA, but that’s no chore. I’m so excited to see what’s up with Seraphina and the dragons!

Fairest: The Lunar Chronicles #3.5 | Marissa Meyer

January 27, 2015 • Feiwel & Friends

Another DUH. It’s really hard–no, probably impossible–to like Queen Levana, but I’ll give her a chance.

Crimson Bound | Rosamund Hodge

May 5, 2015 • Balzer + Bray

Whoa, whoa, Little Red Riding Hood? Well, I just can’t say no to that ever. I really enjoyed CRUEL BEAUTY, so I’m excited to see what Rosamund Hodge has in store in this one.

The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate: Calpurnia Tate #2 | Jacqueline Kelley

July 7, 2015 • Henry Holt & Co.

OMG GUYSSSSS. I know I’ve mentioned before my love for Calpurnia Tate. I’ve been wishing and hoping that Jacqueline Kelley was going to write another book, and lo! IT’S HAPPENING! *happy dances*

The Young Elites #2 | Marie Lu

Pub date TBA • Putnam

I promise I’m going to post my review of THE YOUNG ELITES soon. Preview: I really, really enjoyed it and am full of THOUGHTS about what might be in store. It goes without saying that I’ll read whatever Marie Lu writes, and this is no exception.

Throne of Glass #4 | Sarah J. Maas

September 10, 2015 • Bloomsbury Children’s

That’s the UK pub date according to Goodreads, so let’s hope that the US pub date is earlier because I can’t even fathom the depth of awesomeness that is in store in this series. It’s no joke that Sarah J. Maas is on this list twice: She’s fabulous. I want all of her words.

Top Ten Books on my Winter TBR

These seasonal TBRs are honestly some of my favorite Top Ten Tuesdays. You know why? No matter how hard I try, and no matter how awesome the Broke and Bookish girls are at keeping the topics coming after sooooo many Top Ten Tuesdays, I feel like I repeat myself. And that bugs me just on a personal level. I like to keep it fresh! Enter these awesome lists that HAVE to change, and Amy is a super happy girl. I’m SO EXCITED FOR THESE BOOKS! Obvs I have more than ten. I didn’t even try to rein myself in.

winter

Save Me | Jenny Elliott • January 6, 2015 (Swoon Reads)

Oooh, guys. So much going on in this debut. Witchcraft, forbidden love, whales. Also, I kind of can’t stop looking at the cover, with the girl floating in midair. It’s mysterious and magical and beautiful.

All the Bright Places | Jennifer Niven • January 6, 2015 (Knopf)

I have to say, I’m not really a fan of all these “THE FAULT IN OUR STARS meets whatever” descriptions just because a book has death in it. But a debut (another one! Yay!) about two sad, broken kids learning how to not be so sad anymore together is something I will ALWAYS enjoy.

The Darkest Part of the Forest | Holly Black • January 13, 2015 (Little Brown BFYR)

Holly Black is a new-to-me author, friends. I only really started reading her books this year, and I really enjoyed them. This story about siblings and faeries and a horned boy in the woods in a glass casket sounds FAB.

Fairest: The Lunar Chronicles #3.5 | Marissa Meyer • January 27, 2015 (Feiwel & Friends)

DUH.

In Some Other World, Maybe | Shari Goldhagen • January 13, 2015 (St. Martin’s Press)

Really looking forward to this one. Sure, it’s kind of adult-ish because it follows a group of young people into adulthood, but hey. Sometimes you have to see what the fictional people you own age are up to.

I Was Here | Gayle Forman • January 27, 2015 (Viking Juvenile)

DUH 2.0

I’ll Meet You There | Heather Demetrios • February 3, 2015 (Henry Holt & Co.)

No but stop. Wounded veteran? Literally, you don’t have to say anything else. Nothing. I’m in.

Better When He’s Bold: Welcome to the Point #2 | Jay Crownover • February 3, 2015 (William Morrow)

Guys, Jay Crownover is so legit. Her Marked Men series is one of my favorites, and I enjoyed the first book in her Welcome to the Point series, too. BRING IT, GIRL.

Red Queen: Red Queen Trilogy #1 | Victoria Aveyard • February 10, 2015 (Harper Teen)

First of all, THIS COVER. So provocative. But I like the sound of the story too, obviously, with it’s blood divisions and secrets.

Seeker: Seeker #1 | Arwen Elys Dayton • February 10, 2015 (Delacorte BFYR)

So, a Game of Thrones meets Hunger Games comparison. Ok, I can dig it. Although seekers remind me of nothing ever aside from Harry Potter. Also, I’m very interested in this whole “her best friend and the boy she loves isn’t who she thinks” business.

A Wicked Thing | Rhiannon Thomas • February 24, 2015 (Harper Teen)

WHOA WHOA WHOA. A Sleeping Beauty retelling about what happens AFTER the marriage? STAHPPPPP.

The Winner’s Crime: The Winner’s Trilogy #2 | Marie Rutkoski • March 3, 2015 (Farrar Straus Giroux)

DUH 3.0

The Storyspinner: The Keeper’s Chronicles #1 | Becky Wallace • March 3, 2015 (Margaret K. McElderry)

Ooh, so this story kind of has shades of Kvothe for me somehow: a fantasy about a performer with no troupe…actually that’s kind of where it stops. But there’s murder and a missing princess and magical beings and scheming dukes. *nods head*

The Orphan Queen: The Orphan Queen #1 | Jodi Meadows • March 10, 2015 (Katherine Tegen Books)

I’ve never read anything by Jodi Meadows. I KNOW. This sounds like a more Amy place to start than her previous series, so I’m really looking forward to it. There’s lots of fantasies on this list! YAY!

What books are you guys looking forward to this winter?

Top Ten Tuesday | Top Ten Sequels I Can’t Wait to Read

Top Ten TuesdayTop Ten Sequels I Can’t Wait to Read

Friends, my computer is being lame and it’s almost past my bedtime, so I’m going to just have to leave this graphic here as my YAY SEQUELS list. WAHH! I has a sad about it! I’m going to try and update with some more words tomorrow. But in the meantime, THESE. GIVE ME ALL OF THESE. I tried to keep this list to what I think of as actual sequels–number 2 in a series. But, well, I gave in a bit at the end there. Oops slash not oops.

EDIT: Just realized I misnumbered my Throne of Glass sequel! I mean obvs I want to read number 6, but I’d like number 4 first.

Top Ten Tuesday Sequels

Top Ten Tuesday | Books I Want to Reread

Top Ten TuesdayTop Ten Books I Want to Reread

GUYSSSS REREADING IS MY JAM. I love it. I LOVE IT. I’m constantly rereading books, sometimes in print, sometimes via audio, which is one of my favorite ways to reread. However I do it, I always wind up rereading at least 5 books every year. I have a few standard rereads–THE SCORPIO RACES, THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE, ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS, AMY & ROGER’S EPIC DETOUR–but I’m hoping to reread these 10 books, too. WOOO REREADS!!!!!

Top Ten Tuesday rereads

1. OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon. So I know people are in the midst of Outlander fever right now, which I totally get and is completely awesome. I’ve reread OUTLANDER once and got about halfway through DRAGONFLY IN AMBER before my attention was dragged away by something new. But watching the show has reignited my desire to reread these books.

2. LOVELY, DARK, AND DEEP by Amy McNamara. Are you guys sick of me mentioning this book yet? Yes, no? I need to get on my reread of this, but I think I’m going to wait for the wintertime. This book takes place in Maine in the winter and it’s such a perfect atmosphere. LOVE THIS BOOK.

3. Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. The books on this list are constantly on my mind, even after I’ve read them, sometimes years later. Immediately upon finishing HEIR OF FIRE I was like “OMG I NEED ALL OF THESE AGAIN.” I’ve got the audiobooks so I’m going to audio reread these in the new year. WHOOP!

4. THE BURNING SKY by Sherry Thomas. I need to reread this one before I pick up book 2. I very much enjoyed this alternate world fantasy. Definitely need to hop on the reread ASAP.

5. EVERY BREATH by Ellie Marney. Guys. MYCROFT. I CANNOT BECAUSE I DIE. This book was fantastic. Like, FABULOUS. I bought the first two from the Australian publisher and I just need to dive in again. AHHHH! Wonderful.

6. THE 5TH WAVE by Rick Yancey. I have my fingers crossed for this movie you guys because this book was so gripping and mind-fucking and excellent. I have book 2 in my piles somewhere ready to be under my nose.

7. SEA OF TRANQUILITY by Katja Millay.  Friends, what’s Katja been up to lately? THE SEA OF TRANQUILITY was raw and emotional and intense, and I loved it.

8. SERAPHINA by Rachel Hartman. DRAGONS ARE EVERYTHING. I’m beyond BEYOND excited for SHADOW SCALE, but it’s been a while so I am in need of and looking forward to a refresher.

9. TIGER LILY by Jodi Lynn Anderson. This is a book that I’ve reread passages of but never the whole thing. It was so lovely and heartbreaking that I probably have to be in the mood for it, but it’s so lovely and heartbreaking that I need to read it again.

10. SCARLET by A.C. Gaughen. Robin Hood WHAT! I need to reread this one before I read book 2 and, soon, book 3. I didn’t LOVE Scarlet right away, but ROBIN HOOD.

Top Ten Tuesday | Series I Want to Start

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Series I Want to Start

Friends, I have something like a compulsive series-starting problem. Or maybe a series-unfinishing problem. So finding new series that I haven’t started yet was actually really hard. There are a few newer series on here, but there are a good number of older ones, too. They are all series that I’m curious about and anxious to get reading!

Series1. Abhorsen by Garth Nix. I can’t believe I haven’t started this series yet. It’s honestly a little ridiculous. My bestie Alyssa keeps insisting that I start them, and my other bestie Brittany bought me SABRIEL. I will fix this.

2. Dreamdark by Laini Taylor. It goes without saying that Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series is one of my favorites. I have wanted to read Laini Taylor’s first series for a while now, even though fairies and I are sometimes love-hate. Hopefully because it’s Laini, this will be love.

3. The Demon’s Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan. This series always reminded me of Supernatural, so that makes me extra excited to read it. Now that I’ve read the first book (but, hello, not the next two) of Sarah Rees Brennan’s Lynburn Legacy books, I’m even more excited.

4. Something Strange & Deadly by Susan Dennard. If you guys know me even a little bit, you might know that zombies are not really my jam, and I hear that this is what’s going on–at least in some part–in this series. That being said, I still want to give it a try. I’ve always heard such good things!

5. Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins. Whenever I feel like reading something fun and humorous with a touch of paranormal goings on, I always think of Rachel Hawkins. This series, which revolves around ancient guardians known as Paladins, sounds even more up my alley than Rachel’s other books.

6. Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson.  I looooove the Mistborn series. I’ve been gearing up to listen to book 3 because the audio is excellent. But all of Brandon Sanderson’s books appeal to me. Can’t wait to start this one…eventually.

7. The United States of Asgard by Tessa Gratton. I’m sorry, did you say Vikings? STAHHHP I’M INNNNN.

8. Dissonance by Erica O’Rourke. I’ve heard LOTS of excellent things about this series, and HEY! It just started! The parallel universes angle sounds so interesting.

9. Antigoddess by Kendare Blake. Ooooh, dying gods? Unrest? Yes, please. I’ll take any and all mythology retellings that I can get my hands on.

10. Bloodlines by Richelle Mead. I tore through the Vampire Academy series a few summers ago. Like, couldn’t stop reading them once I started. I hear great things about this series, too. And hello, Adrian. *winks*

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Places Books Made Me Want to Visit

YAY I love this week’s Top Ten Tuesday! Friends, I love being able to visualize the settings of the books I’m reading. One of the bonus side effects of this is that I often find myself DYINGGG to visit the places these books describe, whether real or imaginary. I’ve got a mix of both here. Now, let’s all plan a vacation, mmkay?

places to visit

Westeros/Essos

Books: A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin

Umm, obvs I want to go to Westeros. But, like, it’s not really great there right now, guys. Everyone is fighting, no one is loyal to the right people at the right time, basically everyone dies, people are cray…the list goes on. If I could book a ticket there tomorrow, would I still? YOU BET.

places to visit

New Beijing

Books: The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

I have to tell you, visiting Asia is not necessarily near the top of my list of places to go. No specific reason. But Marissa Meyer has created a completely shiny, realistically futuristic New Beijing, and I’d love to see it. Also maybe if I could run into Kai somewhere, that would be super.

places to visit

Les Cirque des Reves

Book: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Is it creepy that I want to go to Les Cirque des Reves? Not sure that I care. This place is so magical and indulgent and mysterious. I crave the opportunity to set foot in it myself and visit the tents and the Ice Garden and EVERYTHING. GAH NEED TO REREAD ASAP.

places to visit

Thisby

Book: The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

DUH. Also, this picture is EXACTLY EXACTLY how I picture Puck’s house, as well as the beach where the races take place. Thisby remains one of the most vividly realized imaginary places I’ve ever read, maybe because it seems like it could be so real and exist in our world. I would MOVE to Thisby if it were real. I would, I would.

places to visit

Iceland

Book: Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

Ah, now we get to the ACTUAL PLACES portion of the list. Iceland isn’t somewhere that’s always been on my vacation radar, but it’s most certainly a place I want to visit now that I’ve read BURIAL RITES. It’s so stark and lovely and fiercely beautiful there. At least, all the pictures look that way.

places to visit

Paris

Books: Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins | Just One Day by Gayle Forman

So I’ve been fortunate in my life to have visited Paris three times. It’s the only place on this list that I’ve actually already been, but guys? It’s magic there. Like, the air is full of magic fairy dust (SHHHH, that’s not smog). Every time I read a book set there it makes me want to go back.

places to visit

Prague

Book: Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Literally every picture I’ve ever seen of Prague is gorgeous. I’m dying to go there. DYING.

places to visit

The Cotswolds

Book: Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

Ahh, look at this nice, sunny picture! The Cotswolds as they are described in Sarah Rees Brennan’s book aren’t as friendly-looking, but it still looks like an incredibly cozy, beautiful place to visit. I’d go there, but stay far away from the woods. You know?

places to visit

Maine

Books: The Penderwicks at Pointe Mouette by Jeanne Birdsall | Lovely, Dark, and Deep by Amy McNamara

Maine will turn up on every single list like this, friends. It’s only a few hours from me, but I’ve never been. I’m so drawn to the rocky beaches and the chill in the air and the quiet woods. It’s an Amy kind of place, friends.

places to visit

Edinburgh

Book: The Falconer by Elizabeth May

Yes, THE FALCONER takes place in historical Edinburgh. But Scotland is basically my holy grail of places to visit, and this book made Edinburgh even more appealing to me.

places to visit

Scottish Highlands

Books: Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon

THE HIGHLANDS OMG. GET ME HERE. MY BODY IS READY. PLEASE. DON’T MAKE ME BEG ALTHOUGH I TOTALLY WILL. Ahem. So, you get it, I’m assuming.
