Adventures Through Awkwardness: 2014 Middle Grade Challenge

As you all may or may not know, I think middle grade is just the bees knees. So does my girl Lisa. There’s just something so endearing and awesome about younger kids going on adventures and living through growing pains and beginning to learn how to make their own mark on the world. Those little whipper snappers just make me laugh and cry and cheer so hard!

So, because Lisa and I love all things middle grade so much, we’ve decided to put together this super challenge for 2014! We’d be beyond jazzed if you joined us. The rules are simple, and we’ve got some fun twists on typical reading challenges, so without further ado, here’s standard operating procedure for Adventures Through Awkwardness: 2014 Middle Grade Challenge!

(PS. Grab that cute little button over there if you want to join in!)

Rules & Regs

  • There are no pub year restrictions for this challenge. Your books don’t have to be published this year, or even last year. If there’s a middle grade book that came out 10 years ago that you’ve always wanted to read, pick it up! All middle grade books are fair game, regardless of the year they were released.
  • Middle Grade generally features protagonists between the ages of 8 and 12. Since some of our favorite MGs feature main characters who start within that range but age as the stories progress (ahemPercyJacksonahem), those totally count, too.
  • There are no goals or number games in Adventures Through Awkwardness, although aiming for one middle grade review each month would give you the best experience of the awesomeness! Because…
  • …Lisa and I have cooked up this pretty rad monthly theme schedule! Huzzah! Each month, Lisa and I will alternate hosting duties, and participants can read and review any middle grade book that corresponds to that month’s theme. Our link-up posts will go live on the first Monday of every month and your review should be posted in the link-up by the last day of the month. Here’s the schedule we’ve cooked up for you (subject to change):
January: Contemporary
February: Fantasy
March: Mythology
April: Historical
May: Reader’s Choice
June: Male Main Character
July: Classic
August: Graphic Novel
September: Magic
October: Dystopian
November: Female Main Character
December: 2014 Debut

Each review you link up each month gets you one entry into our monthly prize packs! You can review as many books for this challenge as you like.

  • The monthly host posts will also include some ideas of what books might fit that month’s theme
  • We want to be able to chat with you guys about these awesome MGs ALL THE TIME! Use the #AwkwardAdventures hashtag on Twitter for any challenge chats or questions!
  • If you’re going to be participating in this challenge, let us know! Create an intro post on your blog or tumblr if you have one, and post the link to that post either below or over at Lisa’s place. (Both places would be awesome so that we can both keep track and get to know you all!)
  • Lisa will be hosting January, so head on over to Lisa Is Busy Nerding for link-ups and other goodies!

That’s pretty much it, guys. We’re aiming a for no-stress, lots of fun challenge! Of course, if you have any questions, feel free to hit either of us up on twitter or via email or by leaving a comment!

Comments

  1. I am so excited for this! Yes, I know it’s our challenge but whatever it’s awesome.

  2. I’m signing up for this, but I couldn’t remember initially which blog I saw it on and had to do some digging.

You may want to consider posting it over to A Novel Challenge, so it’s easier for other people to find. (I looked for it there first!)
