Book Blogger A to Z Survey
I love it when I get to this stuff, friends. Remember those notes that people used to tag-pass on Facebook where you had to answer all those questions about yourself? 25 things you don’t know about me, go through your iPod and list these random songs, favorite albums, literary stuff. Whatever it was, I always got a kick, not just out of writing it myself, but reading what other people had to say. I’m so glad that Jamie @ The Perpetual Page-Turner created these awesome bookish survey for that exact reason. Not only does it give me an excuse to run my mouth about BOOKS, but it also helps me connect with YOU GUYS! And that’s the bees knees.
uthor You’ve Read the Most Books From
Janet Evanovich. Jersey homegirl knows how to write some fun, sexy books! Seriously, don’t judge the Stephanie Plum books by the movie. DO NOT. Books are WAAAAAY better. Also, Morelli 4 Life. Get down to business, cupcake.
est Sequel Ever
Best EVER?! Whew. I’m going to give you two: one adult and one YA. Adult: Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon. YA: Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. The first one is because I love that series, I have it on the brain, and the second book is INSANE. The second one because Cinder was outstanding; Scarlet was outstanding times 2.
urrently Reading
So, I have a few things going right now: Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas, The Once and Future King by T.H. White (for Classics Retold!), Under the Empyrean Sky by Chuck Wendig, and the audiobook of Scarlet by Marissa Meyer.
rink of Choice While Reading
Depends on the time of day. Usually iced tea. I get bored very easily with drinking water. If it’s at night, though, I’m probably drinking a cup of coffee. It’s like my dessert.
-reader or Physical Book?
I will always prefer physical books. ALWAYS. But my Kindle Paperwhite is pretty legit. The backlight! It’s amazing! I take that with me everywhere so that I’m never without things to read in a pinch. Although to be honest, I usually have a print book in my purse, too. It’s one of the reasons I can’t carry small purses. No room for real books in there, friends.
ictional Character You Probably Would Have Actually Dated In High School
I had THE biggest crush on a Roger Sullivan-type kid in high school. I went to an all-girls school, so I met guys mostly at work. He was such a Roger type. Even looked like the way Roger is described in Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson. SIGH.
lad You Gave This Book A Chance
This Is Not a Test by Courtney Summers. ZOMBIES. Not usually my thing, but that one was suspenseful and not so full of brain-eating and stuff.
idden Gem Book
Lovely, Dark and Deep by Amy McNamara. This book has been lodged in my brain since I finished it in January or February. If I could beg people to read one book that is under everyone’s radar, it would be this one.
mportant Moment in Your Reading Life
Going to library school. I’ve always been an enormous reader. My mom was and still is, and I most definitely inherited my reading gene from her. But when I was in high school, YA was basically…I don’t even know what it was. Nothing. There was nothing. So I read adult books, ALL the time from high school through college. When I went back to library school to be a children’s librarian, it opened up a door to young people’s literature that I had just barely started cracking open myself with the Twilight books and Graceling and Harry Potter, which led to me becoming a full-on lover of YA. It’s like I’ve gotten all the adult-book reading out of the way and now I’m making up for lost YA time.
And you know what? Separate honorable mention here to Harry Potter. Reading those books as a late teen/early 20s person opened my eyes to the fact that children’s books didn’t have to be just for children.
ust Finished
Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein. Terrific. I wasn’t an unequivocal lover of Code Name Verity, but this one was wonderful. Sad and troubling, but wonderful.
inds of Books You Won’t Read
“Won’t” is a tough absolute, but I’ll go ahead and say that it’s more unlikely than not that I’ll read many more zombie books, or horror in general. It’s just not my thing. I don’t really watch scary movies, either. Not because I scare easily, but because I’d just rather be reading/watching other things. And I sometimes hesitate to pick up hard science fiction. (Not hard as in difficult, hard as in set in space, aliens, spaceships, etc.)
ongest Book You’ve Read
I was actually surprised by this. According to Goodreads, the longest book I’ve ever read, coming in at 1,443 pages is The Fiery Cross: Outlander #5 by Diana Gabaldon. I have NO RECOLLECTION of this book being that long, although I knew it was big; all of the books in that series are long. But I was thinking it would be A Storm of Swords: A Song of Ice and Fire #3 by George R.R. Martin (#2 at 1,177) or Cleopatra by Margaret George (#3 at 1,139). Since I’m obsessed now with this stat: I’ve read 8 books over a thousand pages long. BANANAS.
ajor book hangover because of
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. Also, The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. THAT BOOK. Both of those books gave me the ugly cries.
umber of Bookcases You Own
So, there are bookcases all over my house. Not all the books are mine (lots of them are my mom’s), but the ones with just my books on it–3. Two tall ones and a shorter one, all two rows deep on each shelf. And the PILES. Friends. I have SO MANY PILES. It’s honestly getting ridiculous.
ne Book You Have Read Multiple Times
The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson. I’ve read that book four times. I’ve also read The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater five times, and Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins four times. I reread CONSTANTLY, and even that is never enough.
referred Place To Read
In bed. I also love to read outside, but I prefer doing that on days when I won’t sweat doing it because UNCOMFORTABLE. But I love being in the fresh air.
uote That
Inspires You/Gives You All the Feels From a Book You’ve Read
Going old-school with some Where the Sidewalk Ends, friends:
“Listen to the mustn’ts, child. Listen to the don’ts. Listen to the shouldn’ts, the impossibles, the won’ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me… Anything can happen, child. Anything can be.”
BOOM. Nothing like a little Shel Silverstein to ignite the dreamer in me.
eading Regret
As much as I LOVE LOVE LOVE reading YA, I sometimes regret not reading more adult books. I loved them so much when I was growing up and they were so important to me.
eries You Started And Need To Finish (all books are out in series)
Shannon Hale‘s Books of Bayern series. It starts with one of my FAVORITE YA books–The Goose Girl. I still haven’t read book 4 yet. Books 2 and 3–Enna Burning and River Secrets–were great, but nothing compares to the flat-out AWESOME of The Goose Girl, so I’m nervous to finish the series. I will though. Oh! And the Unearthly series by Cynthia Hand.
hree of your All-Time Favorite Books
A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson, and Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. But that’s only three! (Trying to follow the rules here!) Crap. I can’t have this list, though, without any Harry Potter on it. Let’s go with…Goblet of Fire. Always loved that one.
napologetic Fangirl For
A Song of Ice and Fire. Seriously, I am a nerd for those books. I’m obsessed with everything about them. I’ve even sat at my computer and looked through the sigils of ALLLLL the houses in Westeros. I’ve taken quizzes, read forums, and been intrigued by analysis. ANALYSIS. I’m in deep, friends.
ery Excited For This Release More Than All The Others
Ooooh…. Cress by Marissa Meyer. And Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins. I NEEDS THEM!
orst Bookish Habit
This also doubles as a bad blogger habit: I request too many books on NetGalley/Edelweiss. They all sound so good to me! I never have enough time to read them all.
Marks The Spot: Start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book
I don’t have 27 books on my top shelf, but the furthest over from the left (so, the one all the way on the right) is Little Women. The second book from the left is Fire by Kristen Cashore, and the seventh is Cinder by Marissa Meyer. So, that’s kind of the answer to this question!
our Latest Book Purchase
I actually just snagged a pile of books: I needed paperbacks of Forever by Maggie Stiefvater and The Gray Wolf Throne by Cinda Williams Chima. I bought two Liza Palmer books: More Like Her and Nowhere But Home, and We Hear the Dead by Dianne Salerni.
ZZ-Snatcher Book (last book that kept you up WAY late)
I was up pretty late just recently reading Rose Under Fire.
Oh jeez…I just love that quote from Where the Sidewalk Ends. I’ve never read that book before, even though I’m pretty sure I own it. Just. Chills.
Great answers! 🙂
I hear ya on the necessity for big purses. What good is it if it can’t fit a book (or two…) And I totally ugly cried in Time Traveler’s wife. I’m also a huuuuuuge Outlander fan and I’m happy to hear you “get it.” Love your blog!
THIS IS SO ADORABLE. Can your creative genius please rub off on me? I always love your graphics.
I still need to complete this survey too! (Sneak peek — our answers for #1 are the same!)
haha I generally try to have a book (or ebook reader) in my purse with me at all times as well. I’ve read (and loved) Hale’s The Goose Girl as well, and I actually now own ebooks for the rest of that series, but I’ve been afraid to read them because I know they’re now fully her creations, rather than based on a specific fairy tale. Sometimes I like my retellings and pure fantasies to be separated, but I’m more just worried they won’t be as good as the first one is.
Ha! Damn straight Morellil for Life. How can anyone like Ranger? I mean, I like Ranger. But I love Morelli. L-O-V-E!
Oh my gosh, and yes to YA when I was a teen. It was pretty non-existent. I mean, I’m sure there were YA books, but from the time I was in high school I read adult books. And it wasn’t okay for teens to read kids books, when I was a teen either. When I was in high school (my older high school years) Harry Potter started to become more popular, so certainly teens were reading those (but even then, HP wasn’t super popular).
And definitely going to library school opened my eyes to the awesomeness of children’s and YA literature. Yay for library school, right?!
Stephanie Plum!! I can’t wait for book #20! I love how you set up the letters on your post! I also need to read the Outlander series. I have heard a lot of good things about it.
First, LOVE the drop caps! Your post is so pretty 🙂
I was only so-so on Cinder (I think the hype messed with my expectations), but I really adored Scarlet! So excited for more from that series.
I haven’t read or really heard much about Lovely, Dark and Deep but clearly I should get on that one!
I’m so excited to read Rose Under Fire, and I’m happy to hear you enjoyed it more than Code Name Verity! Sometimes I wonder how much hype/expectations affects and alters a reading experience.
DANG! To 8 books over 1,000 pages. Go girl!
Also, I hear you on being late to the YA game but also wishing you read more adult books now. I’m trying to be better and mix up my reading even more and not focus so exclusively on one genre 🙂
ALSO, SO EXCITED to see you bought Nowhere but Home! I absolutely adored that book.
I cried in Time Traveler’s Wife too, that book is just so sad! I keep hearing such wonderful things about The Sky is Everywhere, I really need to read that book. Fun post!
Love the fonts you used to decorate this-so pretty! I’m working on my answers to this survey and am thinking about putting Scarlet on my list for best sequel because it was so amazing!
