Top Ten Summer Releases on My TBR
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. It’s awesome. Every week, the lovely ladies over there post a topic so that book lovers like you and me can pour over our shelves and MAKE A LIST. WORD.
Friends, I’ve loved summer reading since basically forever. I was probably one of the only people in my school who actually got excited when our summer reading lists were given out and I had to go to the bookstore and BUY BOOKS TO READ. This list isn’t quite like those lists from summers past, but I’m still just as excited. So excited, in fact, that I’ve got more than 10 books on here, in what is becoming standard operating procedure around here.
The Lost Sun: The United States of Asgard #1 by Tessa Gratton (June 25, 2013)
Oof, this cover. But I’m so freaking JACKED about it that I don’t even care. NORSE MYTHOLOGY. ROAD TRIPS. PROPHECIES. It sounds like a slightly older, more Nordic, Percy Jackson. Somebody get me the smelling salts!
Under The Empyrean Sky: The Heartland Trilogy #1 by Chuck Wendig (July 30, 2013)
I’ve had my eye on Chuck Wendig’s books for what seems like forever, friends, but I haven’t managed to read them yet. He’s dipping his awesome (I’m assuming) toes in the YA pool with a dystopian centering around CORN and PIRATES. I can’t.
All Our Pretty Songs by Sarah McCarry (July 30, 2013)
Ooooh, fairies! Maybe. There’s SOMETHING going on in this book, something magical and dangerous that drives a wedge between two friends. Also, there’s music and a boy and likely some chicks before dicks drama (is there a non-vulgar way to say that?).
The Passion of the Purple Plumeria: Pink Carnation #10 by Lauren Willig (August 6, 2013)
Y’all know I love the Pink Carnation books, and long-time fans will be just as excited as I am that this book–the freaking TENTH!–is about MISS GWEN and the father of Alex Reid. MISS. GWEN. There’s no way that this isn’t going to be awesome. I refuse to even think it.
Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: Between #1 by April Genevieve Tucholke (August 15, 2013)
Ooooh, this debut sounds so intriguing! So there’s this girl, right, and she encounters this mysterious boy who sweeps her off her feet. When weird stuff starts happening, though, lots of signs point to this boy, who has basically addled with our girl’s head. OR HAS HE??? DUN DUN DUNNNN.
Crown of Midnight: Throne of Glass #2 by Sarah J. Maas (August 15, 2013)
So I liked THRONE OF GLASS plenty, friends, but I didn’t love it like other people did. That doesn’t mean for one second that I’m not invested in these characters and totally confident in Sarah J. Maas’ ability to bring the drama and unravel an epic story. #TeamChaol #Itsnotevenclose
Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan (August 29, 2013)
I was surprised by how much darker Holly Goldberg Sloan’s debut, I’LL BE THERE, was, friends, but it was a bittersweet story and COUNTING BY 7S sounds like more of the same. Also, MIDDLE GRADE. The main character sounds a little autistic, maybe; intensely OCD at the least. When her parents die, she’s kind of lost in the big world. I’m already rooting for her.
The Outside: The Hallowed Ones #2 by Laura Bickle (September 3, 2013)
I am so glad that I read THE HALLOWED ONES, because it basically took the overdone vampire genre and made it straight up CREEPTASTIC. But Laura Bickle also did this awesome thing by making the drama take place in the Amish community, and the fear was palpable because of that community’s inability to know what was going on. This one takes the drama outside that world, and I can’t wait to see what happens to Katie.
Starry Nights by Daisy Whitney (September 3, 2013)
SIGH. Paris. One of my favorite cities in the WHOLE WORLD. Also, a curse that makes ARTWORK come to life. STOP IT RIGHT NOW.
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell (September 10, 2013)
As a person who as a feature on her blog called Excuse Me While I Fangirl, I feel an affinity to this book right off the bat. This story about a girl who writes fan fiction and shares that passion with her sister. Until she doesn’t. This isn’t just a book about being a nerd. It’s about family, sisters, change, and the dad gets a mention in the synopsis, too, and we all know my weakness for that shizz.
Antigoddess: Goddess War #1 by Kendare Blake (September 10, 2013)
I can’t lie: I was a little bummed that I missed Kendare Blake at BEA this year because her book–the first in a new series–sounds so up my alley, I can’t even deal. Anytime a book mentions “gods” of any kind, you can rest assured that I will want to read it. Also, check the title of this series: Goddess War. YO. BRING IT, LADIES. Basically hyperventilating with ANTICIPATION! for this book.
I want to adopt your list – I agree with every single book!
Also, FYI – The new Pink Carnation is available via NetGalley if you ask the publisher for it, I have it loaded and waiting on my Kindle 🙂
Now that you’ve shown me these fabulous covers…I must be off to add to my wishlist at Amazon! Thank you.
Here’s my summer TBR list!
Oh Fangirl, how I want thee. “We all know my weakness for that shiz” made me lol. You rule. Thanks for keeping me in the know about rad books!
Ooooh I forgot about All Our Pretty Songs! And of course I’m looking forward to Fangirl and Antigoddess! I also picked up Counting by 7s at BEA and I’m really curious! 🙂
Ohhhhh this list! I haven’t heard of many of them, but they look oh so good! And I figure if you’re excited about them, they’ll prob be good! I definitely want to read more of the Pink Carnation series; I’ve read the first book and really enjoyed it! Can’t believe how many books there are now in this series!
I can’t wait for The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea! I’m counting down the days until the book is released. 😀
And yes, I can’t wait to read Fangirl and Antigoddess!
Great list!
So many good books! Between the Devil made my list, too. I cannot wait to read Starry Nights and Antigoddess either. I still need to read Throne of Glass (definitely plan to this summer) and The Hallowed Ones. Great list!
Natflix&Books’ TTT
I’ve only recently discovered your blog and I’ve very much enjoyed it. Love your TBR list- I’ll definitely have to add some of these to mine- although mine is already impossibly long! Must take more time to read! That’s what summer is supposed to be about, it seems to me.
Enjoyed reading through your list and love that you provide some commentary about your choices. It looks like you’re going to have a great summer of reading. Enjoy!
Dude, I read Antigoddess last week and It. Is. Awesome! Really happy to see it (and Lauren Willig!) on your list.
I sincerely think you will fall in love with Crown of Midnight. It’s even better than Throne of Glass, and there’s definitely more Chaol to love in it! You’ll have to let me know what you end up thinking of it 🙂
YES! I am dying to read The Outside and to find out what happens next!
