Weeks of April 19 & 26, 2013
Friends, I’m feeling this bi-weekly thing. For now, at least. Once I stop running around like a chicken without a head in a month or so, I’ll probably do the weekly thing again, so bear with me while I post these slightly behemoth Stacking the Shelves posts. You know, kind of like this one. EEP!
NETGALLEY
All Our Pretty Songs: All Our Pretty Songs #1 by Sarah McCarry
(St. Martin’s Griffin, July 30, 2013)
I’ve been waiting on this one, friends, so when I spied it on NetGalley I jumped on it. It’s an urban fantasy set in the Pacific Northwest and it’s got two friends who are both nursing the hots for the same mysterious musician, Jack. I’m TOTALLY intrigued by the fact that the narrator of this book isn’t named in the synopsis. She’s just “the narrator”. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN. I’m so curious.
LIBRARY
Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale
Really excited to be reading this one as part of my Recommended Reads challenge/thing. It’s one of the only Shannon Hale books I haven’t read yet (the other is FOREST BORN), and it’s a kind of retelling of the Sheherezade legend, Mongolian-style. WORD.
Fables, Vol. 1: Legends in Exile by Bill Willingham
I read this first volume in one sitting and then I proceeded to buy the first three volumes immediately. (I got them, I’m just too lazy to take a picture right now.) I used to think that the TV show Once Upon a Time was a little more original, but really there have been stories like it out in the world for a while, and FABLES is certainly a grittier version. I LOVE IT.
The Best Night of Your (Pathetic) Life by Tara Altebrando, narrated by Ali Ahn
Picked this audio up on a whim. Been meaning to read the book, and now I can! Scavenger hunt, road trip, high school dramas? Sure! Why not. I’ve never heard anything by this narrator, though.
Over Sea, Under Stone: The Dark Is Rising Sequence #1 by Susan Cooper, narrated by Alex Jennings
This one is for my Classics Retold King Arthur project. SO. EXCITED.
Leviathan: Leviathan #1 by Scott Westerfeld, narrated by Alan Cumming
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this in a while, but Scott Westerfeld is one author whom I’ve never read but most want to. I’ve heard most excellent things about Alan Cumming’s narration, and I’m completely intrigued by this steampunk series. I’m in.
BOUGHT/GIFTED
Promise of Blood: The Powder Mage Trilogy #1 by Brian McClellan
Guys, you KNOW I am always on the lookout for new fantasy. I don’t read nearly as many as I discover, but they’re all on my radar. This one–about a man who leads a coup against his government that leads to war, rebellion, and the rumor of GODS AWAKENING to do EVIL THINGS. I mean….
Thanks to my more than awesome lady, Alyssa (and, in the case of the second Hero’s Guide, Alyssa by way of Heidi), I’ve received these completely awesome books. It is only right that my very first Juliet Marillier books came from her. Thank you ladies!! *big hugs*
So I would have been onboard the Pacific Northwest book had it not mentioned a love triangle. But the books, they all look delicious. I hope you have a lot of fun reading them.
Happy dance for Book of a Thousand Days!!!!!! I really hope you like it. The main character, Dashti, is just the most awesome person ever. Seriously!
And The Hero’s Guide is really fun! Oh, and I still need to read Daughter of the Forest. I had it from the library, but someone else put it on hold before I got around to reading it. The nerve of some people 🙂
Happy reading 🙂
Book of a Thousand Days was a lovely read. I enjoy reading fresh takes on classic fairytales, and this is a good one. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! It takes a while for things to really happen, but it’s worth it.
Also, my first Marillier book came from Alyssa as well! I need to read it, since I know she loves it and that you enjoyed it. (It’s Daughter of the Forest, by the way.)
Ah!!!! I am so excited about ALL THE BOOKS. First off, yay Hero’s Guide and Juliet Marillier!! Next, I freaking LOVE the Leviathan trilogy, I really hope you do too. I’ve heard good things about the audio, but it’s worth at least flipping through a physical copy as well because the illustrations are freaking amazing. And yes, honestly, Fables is probably WHY I never got into Once Upon a Time. It was a similar idea but SO MUCH BETTER. Grittier, as you said. So happy you’re enjoying.
YAAAYY I am so excited about all of these books, Promise of Blood? WHAT?! Added it. Also I am excited to read book 2 in Sevenwaters with you very soon :]
