Week of January 5, 2013
In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi over at The Story Siren. It’s awesome. Every week, we all get a chance to tell everyone what new books we’ve gotten so that we can tell you guys and we can all drool and squee together! Huzzah for squees! Stacking the Shelves is another weekly meme hosted by Tynga at Tynga’s Reviews. They’re both awesome memes and I love meeting all of you through them!
Whew! It’s been almost three weeks since I did one of these posts, guys! The holidays were the perfect time for me to take a mini-break, though. Lots of things to do! Also, lots of great books to tell you about (although I didn’t get any for Christmas *sad face*)! My NetGalley resolution is already being tested. Or broken, depending on how you look at these kinds of things. Either way, NetGalley was good to me this holiday, friends.
NETGALLEY
The Loop by Shandy Lawson (April 30, 2013 from Hyperion). This book sounds pretty trippy and intense and awesome. It kind of reminds me a lot of Lauren Oliver’s BEFORE I FALL: these two kids relive the same two days over and over again, where they fall in love and are murdered at the end of a road trip. They spend this book trying to figure out a way to break the cycle and LIVE!
The Runaway King: The Ascendence Trilogy #2 by Jennifer A. Nielsen (March 1, 2013 from Scholastic). Ok. So I haven’t actually read the first book in this series yet, but it’s on my docket before the end of this month. I can’t resist the pull of solid-sounding MG/YA fantasy, friends. I can’t.
Revenge of the Girl With the Great Personality by Elizabeth Eulberg (March 1, 2013 from Point). This book sounds all kinds of awesome. First, I love that it’s about a girl who is popular, but not a bitch. She’s likeable and friendly and normal-sounding. OF COURSE, none of the boys notice her, though, so she’s always on the outside looking in with that biz. Lexi apparently sets about to change all of this by getting involved in one of her younger sister’s beauty pageants. (Lexi’s got some family issues, too, involving these pageants and her mother.) Looking forward to reading this one.
Also Known As by Robin Benway (February 26, 2013 from Bloomsbury). Don’t tease me with spies, y’all. DON’T EVEN. This one, about a young girl in a family of spies who needs to go on a solo mission in a private school, sounds great. DEEP COVER, friends. There’s nothing like it.
Dance of Shadows: Dance of Shadows #1 by Yelena Black (February 12, 2013 from Bloomsbury). A 2013 debut, HOLLA! But seriously, I am totally intrigued by this ballet-mystery-paranormal. The main character goes to a ballet academy, this site of her sister’s disappearance some time before, and there’s all kinds of mysterious hints to “fire” and “burning” and “power” in the Goodreads synopsis. My interest is totally piqued.
School Spirits: School Spirits #1 by Rachel Hawkins (May 14, 2013 from Disney-Hyperion). You KNOW I’m not going to skip this second Hex Hall series from Rachel Hawkins, yo. This one is about Izzy Brannick, one of the secondary characters in the later Hex Hall books.
BOUGHT & GIFTED
Prophecy: The Dragon King Chronicles #1 by Ellen Oh. Dragons and Asian-based fantasy? CHECK. YES PLEASE. Also, a 2013 debut.
Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler. I know, I know. Way behind the times with Sarah Ockler. But thanks to my Broke and Bookish Secret Santa, Christina from Book Tasty (YAY THANK YOU!!), I’ve got a copy to read now!
Kat, Incorrigible: The Unladylike Adventures of Kat Stephenson #1 by Stephanie Burgis. Guys, I have been wanting to read this awesome-sounding MG magic historical fiction for AGES. That awesome secret santa I mentioned just before HOOKED ME UP, and I can’t wait to read this one.
That’s my mailbox for the last few weeks, friends! I hope you all got some great things, too!
I got Also Known As too, and just requested Revenge of the Girl With the Great Personality! 🙂
Alice @ Alice in Readerland
They both look good! I can’t wait to read them!
I’m pretty curious about this THE LOOP book, I just like the big letters and the pretty cover.
ALSO I have not yet read The False Prince either and totally need to get on that asap because all of the people who matter love it.
AND.
I am pumped for Also Known As as well because Robin Benway is hilarious and awesome.
The cover of The Loop is pretty rad, right? I like the big letters, too. It sounds interesting for sure.
I am starting The False Prince right now. I’m only on page 2, but so far, so good, lol! I’ve been meaning to read it for so long now!
Also Known As DOES sound awesome. I read one other book by Robin Benway–something April, May and June (can’t remember the exact title and I’m too lazy at the moment to check)–and enjoyed it, so I’m all over this SPY book she’s got going on!
You know what I just noticed: Also Known As changed its cover since I requested it! I’m so glad you are going to be reading it too! I also just requested Elizabeth’s new work, which I’m really looking forward to. Have you read Lonely Hearts Club?
I noticed that too! In fact I had seen it on NG before when the cover was different and didn’t realize at first that it was the same book! It sounds great, though!
And no, I haven’t read anything else by Elizabeth Eulberg, but I’ll check out Lonely Hearts Club!
I still need to read Demonglass! But I loved the first Hex Hall book, and can’t wait to read all of them!!
Demonglass was good! It sets the stage a little bit for this series, I think. You’ll like it! 🙂
Also Known As is great! Twenty Boy Summer is on my TBR Pile.. Happy reading! 🙂
Stacking the Shelves @ Divergent Gryffindor
Thanks Kim! 2013 is the year of Sarah Ockler. I’m reading ALL OF IT because I feel so out of the loop!
How have I not see any of those books on NetGalley, I am so goiing RIGHT over there to check this out! I actually read my ARC of Dance of Shadows yesterday and it was A-MA-ZING!
I have #3 of the Kat Incorrigible series on my TBR shelf and a parcel at the post office which (hopefully) contains the first two so I can’t wait to read those!
My Haul
I AM SO EXCITED for Kat, Incorrigible!!! I’ve been wanting to read it seriously forever. Just the sound of it–a magical regency England MG–gets me all giddy!
And I’m glad you loved Dance of Shadows! It sounds so creepy and awesome!
You’re telling me. SOME holidays. Some of it’s a little blurry, other parts smell like leftover doughnuts. *shakes head*
Duuuuuuuude, THE RUNAWAY KING. If it wasn’t for the fact that my Scholastic book pile is so tall I can’t even trip over them properly, I’d request this since I wouldn’t get it tossed back in my face. BUT, UH, THE RUNAWAY KING.
Also: RACHEL HAWKINS NEW BOOK. The one with the name that I can’t remember even after just having scrolled back up to try to remember it again on the way back down to this comment section. FAIL FOR ALL OF LIFE.
Get with the times, girlfriend. Twenty Boy Summer is hot sad stuff. Like REALLY sad stuff. Like, a squirrel was almost hit by a truck and that’s why I’m crying all over my face SAD. If I dig around enough, there’s a scar somewhere. It’s kind of huge, but it’s really deep inside this heart of mine. Buried. So I don’t wake up with tears. Because that’s what my life was like. After reading THIS BOOK. You should totes read it. 🙂
haha…I love your comments! I know that I’m totally behind the times with Sarah Ockler. I’m going to read SO MANY of her books this year, I swear!! Although the “crying all over my face SAD” you mentioned about Twenty Boy Summer makes me a little nervous.
Have you read The False Prince? I’m just starting it now and getting all kinds of excited about it. I’ve owned it forever and am STOKED to be reading it. Of course, the second book is good incentive to get the first one under my belt, hence the request. See? I have a plan!
Oooo, Dance of Shadows! I love that cover! And I also got Prophecy this week! Hope you enjoy all of the books you got!!! 🙂
My Stacking the Shelves
The cover of Dance of Shadows is gorgeous! I love the red dress! Prophecy sounds like it’s going to be fun as well! Thanks for stopping by!
I think Dance of Shadows looks really cool!
Also Known As is pretty darn awesome! I enjoyed it quite a lot, and I read it really quickly because I was having so much fun with it.
Also, I’m totally jealous you have your copy of Prophecy already. I really want to read that one because it sounds like a totally awesome fantasy book!
