Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Characters I Want to Switch Places With for a Day

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. It’s awesome. Every Tuesday, the lovely folks over at The Broke and the Bookish post a top ten list topic so that book lovers like you and me can pour over our shelves and make our own lists. You can check out all the other Top Ten Tuesday‘s on their site!

Wow. I feel like there are very few characters in books these days that aren’t in jeopardy of some kind or dealing with some tragedy, so saying I want to BE them for a day is essentially saying, “Yes, I’d like to be in mortal peril/life-altering grief for a little while. Get the heart rate up.” This is unappealing to me for a few reasons, the most prominent of which is this: I am a giant wuss. Also, I don’t handle downers very well. But I think I can deal with some drama for a day.

Amy Curry from Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour

No, choosing a character who shares my name is not cheating. Basically, I want to go on a killer road trip with a cute boy who is sweet to me, and friendly and awesome, like Roger. I think that would be aces. Plus, I would DIE to visit all the national parks out west. DIE. And I’ve always had this weird interest in Graceland. I certainly would NOT want to be Amy Curry on the day of the accident, though. No thank you to that. But the road trip? Yes, please.

Puck Connolly from The Scorpio Races

Why am I choosing characters whose parents have died? I feel like loss of parent(s) is a common theme in a lot of the books I read, sad as that is. But I want to be Puck for three reasons: One, I want to have a horse like Dove. Two, I want Thisby to be where I live. And three, Sean Kendrick, with all his mystery and broodiness and horse-whisperer action.

DJ Schwenk from Dairy Queen

You guys, I have a HUMUNGOUS soft spot for farms. I don’t know what it is. The open space, maybe. Or the quiet. Probably a combination of those and a few other things. I’m definitely a country mouse, and I would love to experience DJ’s forthrightness and honesty. I think it would be refreshing. Not that I’m a cagey liar. I just like her style.

Kat Bishop from Heist Society

Thieves, yo. I want to be a burglar. I want to case joints and do recon and have a mark and use all the thieving lingo. Because I think it’s a little bit cool. I mean, thieves are criminals, sure, but I’m also pretty sure that Kat Bishop is cooler than I am. Also, Hale. He’s delish.

Cate Cahill from Born Wicked

Had to have a witch on here, guys, because witches are probably my favorite paranormal thing, and I really love the world that Jessica Spotswood built around Cate and her sisters and their gifts. I can totally relate to the feelings of responsibility that Cate feels like she has to live by, even though she actually wants something else for herself. And Finn is nothing to sneeze at, either.

Diana Holland from The Luxe

Historical fiction DRAMZ! I would love to live in turn-of-the-century New York City just for the dresses and facade of politeness and propriety. Because we all know that those people were cray and out of control. Diana Holland is constantly dealing with some crazy business, but I’d put up with it to wear fancy clothes every day and experience the time.

Mia Hall from If I Stay

Let me just say that I don’t want to be Mia because of the horrific accident that kills her parents and little brother and leaves her on the brink of death. Obviously. Maybe part of it is Adam, who is complex and wonderful. But really what I always envied of Mia was her cello. I’ve always loved it and always wanted to learn it.

Raisa ana’Marianna from The Demon King

I cannot have this list without a kickass fantasy heroine on it. I find myself really, REALLY liking Raisa, guys. She’s got fire and smarts, and she’s strong. And I love that she doesn’t have any special gifts. I mean, she occasionally has visions of the queens who have gone before her, but she doesn’t have magic like Han does. She just has the head on her shoulders and some lady stones. Big fan of those.

Kendra Sorensen from Fablehaven

Fairies! Guys, I think that living the the world of Fablehaven would be just the kind of nonstop action and drama and FUN that I love. Kendra is smart and brave, and I like her tons. I LOVE the world of this series. Living in it, even just for a day, would be adrenaline-filled, dangerous, and fun.

Lennie Walker from The Sky Is Everywhere

Guys, I really hesitated putting Lennie on here because the fact that her sister has just died is one of those sad things that I just don’t think I’d be able to handle myself at all. But the rest of this story is so divine: the language, the drama, the characters, the setting. I’d switch places with Lennie just to see Gram’s garden and visit the bed in the woods. But I’d love to meet Joe. He’s an incredibly special character, and I always loved the vibe I got from him while reading–passionate, friendly, warm.

Comments

  1. I’d love to be Kat Bishop! How fun would it be to do all those things (casing the joint etc…) like you said. Fun list!

  6. YES I chose Lennie and Puck too! Even though there’s tragedy in their lives, they’re such fantastic, enigmatic and strong characters in their own ways. (And of course Sean Kendrick and Joe don’t hurt!) I thought about Amy too, simply because I would love to spend a day on the open road, windows down and Roger’s playlist going in the car.

    My Top Ten

  7. Miss Anderson says

I think Heist Society is making its way onto my TBR list. I’m seeing it all over the place. If it contains a character you want to switch places with for a day, then it must be good!

  8. I actually haven’t read any of these, but I love your introduction. I’m not really a wuss, but I am rather unfit. So if body-swopping would mean I got their fitness, I would totally live an adventure for 24 hours. Providing I don’t die, y’know?

  9. Diana Holland would be fun! All those fabulous. beautiful dresses! Yep, good choice!

  10. I am KICKING MYSELF for not thinking to trade places with Kat! AHHHHH I COULD TOTALLY MAKE OUT WITH HALE.

  11. Guess who hasn’t read any of these books?!?!? Checking them out on GR, NOW. Way to add to my TBR!

  12. I’d love to switch places with Kat Bishop and Mia! Very unique list! 🙂

  14. Awesome list! I absolutely loved If I Stay. I can’t wait to dive into Where She Went. I really need to start reading The Scorpio Races as well. I’m glad to see that one of the characters made your list. 🙂

    Thanks for sharing!

  15. It’s interesting you would like to be Mia Hall, I can’t decide if I agree or not lol Have you read the sequel ? I think her character changes in the second book, she seems like such a good girl in the first book and so much more erratic in the second. Though as a musician I also envy her obvious talent

  16. DUDE I WANT TO BE A ART THIEF SO BADLY!! And no, totally not cheating 🙂

  17. I enjoyed Dairy Queen. It was an interesting book.

  18. Gah, so many of these are on my to-read list! Last week’s lists prompted me to finally read Daughter of Smoke and Bone. This week, maybe the Sky is Everywhere. Also, totalllllly would love to be Amy for a day (or longer…). Roger…*swoon.* And seeing Fablehaven for a day would be BAD.ASS. Great picks. 🙂

  19. I would TOTALLY want to be Amy in Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour. I love road trips, love music and I totally want to visit all the places that they went to in that book! Plus, you know, Roger 😉
