Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I’d Like to See Made Into a Movie

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. It’s awesome. Every Tuesday, the lovely folks over at The Broke and the Bookish post a top ten list topic so that book lovers like you and me can pour over our shelves and make our own lists. You can check out all the other Top Ten Tuesday‘s on their site!

This is a tricky question for me, guys, because I always worry when I hear that one of my favorite books is being turned into a movie. Also, I have a tendency to REALLY like books that would be too hard or too crazy to be made into movies. And, you know, I feel like when one of my favorite books gets made into a movie it always loses something. For instance, I’m both excited and WORRIED about the movie adaptation of THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE, one of my absolute all-time favorite books, because one of THE BEST parts of that book is the writing–obviously NOT going to factor into the movie. So, you know.

Book cover for Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan MatsonAmy & Roger’s Epic Detour. Road trip movie, PLUS a really authentic, sweet romance, PLUS Yellowstone Park, Graceland, rich Kentuckians, and cheesy motel rooms? All of this, guys. EVERY. LAST. BIT. I have this picture in my mind of Amy and Roger cruising down the highway, windows open, sun shining, listening to all that great music, and it just seems like perfection to me. I LOVE THEM. Also, I feel like that book cover is TOTALLY a movie poster, amirite?

Book cover for Legend by Marie Lu

Legend. I would DIE to see Day and June on a movie screen. The world-building inLEGEND doesn’t really have any holes, and the pace and the plot move at a great clip, and there’s great drama and danger. It reminded me of watching a movie when I was reading it. Plus, making a movie of LEGEND would be a perfect opportunity for Day and June to be aged up; they’re much older in my head than they’re supposed to be in the book.

Book cover for The Penderwicks by Jeanne BirdsallThe Penderwicks. I don’t really care which, although OBVIOUSLY it would make sense to start with the first one. I’m not sure that the Penderwicks books would make the most high-profile, big money movie, but seriously, I would love to see this family in the flesh so that it could be an enabler to my already CRAZY wish that the Penderwicks were real.

Book cover for The Probability of Miracles by Wendy WunderThe Probability of Miracles. THIS would be a MAJOR tear-jerker. I can totally see this as a movie. It has such vibrant, quirky, original characters, and a really heartfelt story. Plus, I would love to see some of those Samoan dances in real life, as opposed to me and my craptastic rhythm trying to picture them in my head.

Book cover for The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. SmithThe Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight. I’m loving the contemps for movies, guys! This book would be super cute as a movie, I think. I have a soft spot for books that take place in really short periods of time (I ALMOST included GRAFFITI MOON on this list for that reason). I like the pacing of it. Also, who doesn’t love Can’t Hardly Wait, huh? WHO? Takes place in basically just one, AWESOME night. I would love to see Hadley and Oliver’s story on the big screen.

Book cover for Terrier by Tamora Pierce

Anything by Tamora Pierce. Seriously. I feel like the protagonists in her books remind me of Arya Stark. Take Beka Cooper, for instance. Badass, tomboy, good fighter, strong, confident, takes no shit from anyone. It’s like teenage Arya. Plus the fantasy world-building is top-notch, the secondary characters are awesome and well-rounded, there’s good action, and, well, Tamora’s books are just the business.

Book cover for The Duke and I by Julia QuinnThe Bridgertons or the Love by Numbers series. There’s ALWAYS more room for some good historical romance movies, yes? These are two of my favorite series, by Julia Quinn and Sarah MacLean, respectively. And of course, the sexytimes are NEVER anything but a bonus. Honestly though, the books in each of these series are fun, funny, romantic, and endearing. That sounds like a great movie to me, y’all!

Book cover for Raw Blue by Kirsty Eagar

Raw Blue. I LOVED this story about a young surfer girl, Carly, who is trying to live in the aftermath of asexual assault, find herself, and learn how to be in a relationship with a fellow surfer, Ryan. This is a really deep, thoughtful, genuine story that I would LOVE to see on the screen. I’d love to see these characters who were so real and amazing. Also, SURFING.

Book cover for Unraveling by Elizabeth NorrisUnraveling. Talk about edge-of-your-seat ACTION, guys. UNRAVELING has a freakin’ COUNTDOWN in it. It’s also got a crazy pace, great characters, a solid relationship, TWISTINESS, feelings. EVERYTHING that makes a great movie is in place! I’d totally pay 11 bucks to see it, guys.

Book cover for Grave Mercy by R.L. LaFevers

Grave Mercy. HELL. YES. Dear movie people, please turn this FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC book about medieval assassin nuns into an equally kick-ass movie by NOT changing anything at all and casting someone hot as Duval. Not only will I see this movie in the theater, but I will buy it for my home viewing pleasure as well. Remember, though: DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING. This book is so awesome as it is.

  10. Agreed on The Statistical Probability! It’s on my list (as well as several others so far – popular choice!) and would be the cutest love story on screen – and who could say no to a real life Oliver??

And oh goodness I’m worried about The Sky is Everywhere adaptation, too! That book is so, so beautiful because of the writing; and then to know Selena Gomez is having her way with it? It terrifies me all the directions it could go in.

  20. Great list! Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour is showing up on a lot of Top Tens this week 🙂 It appears it must be done.

  21. ahhh I’m afraid for The Sky is Everywhere too! I really hope it doesn’t disappoint. I think Legend would be an AWESOME movie too, totally action-packed and blockbuster ready. The Statistically Probability of Love at First Sight would be a totally cute romcom, INTO IT.

  22. Hell yes for Grave Mercy. Hot Duval, please!
I love your list for reasons that would be too long to list.

Also, I do not understand why your blog will not show up in my reader. Do you have any idea why Why WHY? I can’t deal. I need your posts there every time. EVERY TIME. Help.

  23. Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour would be an awesome movie. AND I’d be willing to bet it would have a great soundtrack, too. I included Statistical Probability on my list – it was basically meant to be a movie. It’s cute, has some drama and looove, and involves England. I’ll basically see anything if it involves going to England or a British boy. SIGN ME UP.

  24. I would LOVE to see some Tamora Pierce book/movies!

  25. A Modern Girl says

I loved Tamora Pierce’s Song of the Lioness quartet when I was growing up. Great books.
