Hey there loves! As many of you know, one of the biggest “rules” that we are pushing is that we hosts must “know” you. A lot of you have asked what constitutes us “knowing” you, and that is a very valid question in this digital age! Basically, we want to have faith in those that we are allowing into our precious project. We want to be able to say, “Oh yeah, that is the girl who chatted with me about her search for a job as a Librarian.” Or, “She is the girl who was active in the hashtag despite not being able to join in on last round.” We look at your avi picture, we memorize your name, we make notations next to your sign-up in our spreadsheet. Full disclosure: when we go to our spreadsheet and one (OR TWO!!) of us has to notate, “no idea who she is, she doesn’t even follow me” we give some serious side eye. Are we looking for followers? Not in the least bit. Do we think that you ONE BILLION PERCENT should know who ALL THREE hosts are? OH. YES. We actually had a ridiculous amount of people this round thank two of us, not know that they were speaking to one of the hosts when we reached out to inquire about an issue, and so on. It is embarrassing for YOU when we bring this info back to base as the information on who we are is so readily available in a few different places. With that being said, we thought it would be helpful if we each wrote up a little “about me” so that you had some points to bring up when you chatted us up over the next month. HINT: THIS MEANS IT IS A VERY GOOD IDEA TO GO AND VISIT BRITT AND ALYSSA‘S POSTS, THERE MIGHT BE A QUIZ LATER. We put the question to twitter, and some of you had some things you just HAD to know, so let’s get goin’!
How did you get the idea for The Secret Sister Project?
Well, to be honest, Alyssa had the idea for it. She wanted to create something within our community that fostered warm fuzzies between strangers, and who doesn’t want to bring smiles to people’s faces? The prospect of cultivating and growing a supportive, warm group within the blogging community was really appealing to all three of us.
How did the three of you meet?
Of course, we first met each other online. For me, I met Brittany and Alyssa separately. I think one of my first conversations with Brittany was some emailing back and forth about how to convert to wordpress.org. Fascinating, I know. But she was, and remains, super sweet, and when I became friendly with Alyssa, the three of us just kind of meshed up. Speaking of Alyssa, we first met right around this time three years ago (OMG FRIENDIVERSARY!) I was her Secret Santa, and we just bonded over shared interests. Clicked pretty quickly. I would just probably die without them.
What is your favorite (or most popular) blog post that you have written?
I always have a hard time with these questions! If I had to pick a favorite post of mine, it would probably be one of my Top Ten Tuesdays, only because I LOVE making lists of books. I’m not all that creative when it comes to blog posts, which is something I always want to work on. One of my most popular blog posts is my review of CODE NAME VERITY. Not sure how this happened, but there you go.
List a few things that anyone can mention to get you talking!
Just a few, huh? Ok. Obviously books and reading. Outlander (books and show). Maggie Stiefvater. Cheese. Oreos. Food in general. Being from New Jersey. Shopping on Etsy. Friday Night Lights. Football. Baseball (YANKEES!) Harry Potter theories. Game of Thrones theories (R + L = J). I think Tom Brady knew about those footballs. That’s a good place to start, I think!
Which FRIENDS character would you have dated?
Hahahaha, so full disclosure, I’m not nearly as big a FRIENDS fan as Brittany and Alyssa are. I love it and think it’s a hilarious show, but I haven’t seen every episode, I can’t quote from it most of the time, and I’d say about 95% of FRIENDS jokes go over my head. That being said, I’ll have to say Ross. Joey is too…well, dumb, and Chandler would probably drive me nuts eventually. Ross is nerdy and adorable and weird.
Were Ross and Rachel really on a break?
I mean…I feel like I don’t know how to answer this properly. Technically yes? Emotionally no? I’m pleading FRIENDS ignorance here.
What is in your Zombie Apocalypse Kit?
UGH ZOMBIES. Something good to know about me: I hate them. I don’t like reading about them, I don’t want to watch TV shows about them, nothing. Hard pass. But I guess my zombie apocalypse kit would include…I don’t even know what kills zombies, but whatever that is. Canned goods. Velveeta cheese. Books. A light sweater. An umbrella in case it rains on me. Band-Aids. A flame-thrower. I have no idea if any of this is even reasonable.
Marry, Kiss, Kill: Loki, Thorne, Jamie Fraser
This is maybe the easiest question for the three of us to answer. It’s the easiest for me. Marry: Jamie Fraser, Kiss: Thorne, Kill: Loki. #sorrynotsorry
What genre do you enjoy reading the most?
Fantasy. Fantasy of any kind. Old ones, new ones, adult ones, young adult ones…doesn’t matter. If it’s got a map? Sign me up. If it’s got APPENDICES? Get me the smelling salts. The more in depth the world building, the better. Give me conspiracy theories, analyzation. I want to be totally absorbed, and I’m not turned off by the idea of reading books that top 500 pages.
Do you have interests outside of reading?
I do! I love sports, so I watch and follow a lot of that, but not basketball. I love the Yankees, Jets, and Rangers. I also root for the Giants when they aren’t playing the Jets. I never root for any teams from New England in any sport ever. I also love cooking and baking, and am always looking up recipes for things and wanting to try them out. One thing that I’ve always wanted to try to make is croissants. I love stationery and cards and often lament my inability to catch up on my correspondence (HA! FRIENDS JOKE!)
What is your favorite standalone book that you have read lately?
Hmmm…favorite recent standalone. I feel like this is hard for me, for a couple reasons. One, I LOOOOOVE series books. I love them. I’m not a person who can wait for all the books to come out before I start them. Two, often a lot of books that are supposed to be standalones turn into series. All that being said, my favorite recent standalone…UPROOTED by Naomi Novick. Favorite all-time standalone? Tie between THE SCORPIO RACES and THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE.
Who is your favorite or least favorite character in literature?
In terms of character archetypes, I guess I would go with…the conflicted hero. Or maybe the good guy with a bad name kind of thing. I like the conflicts. The characters that live in the gray areas but ultimately have good hearts.
Who is your favorite author that you have met in person?
I haven’t met many authors in person, honestly, aside from when I go to BEA and get books signed. Counting that–since I don’t really have any other choice–it was lovely to briefly meet Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo. Rick Riordan was also super nice.
What upcoming books are you excited for?
Wooo, boy. I’m really looking forward to THE LOVE THAT SPLIT THE WORLD, A COURT OF MIST AND FURY, BUILT, THE CROWN’S GAME, RIDERS, A STUDY IN CHARLOTTE…like, so many more.
Favorite gifs for reference?
OMG I love so many! Here are a few of the ones that always seem to either make me laugh or apply to my life:
So that’s me in a nutshell! Come talk to me! Also go see Brittany and Alyssa and get to know them, too. They’re pretty damn awesome.
I’m so jealous that you met Rick Riordan. I absolutely love him. I’m also excited for a Study in Charlotte this upcoming year. Anything that resembles Sherlock Holmes is exciting to me. Nice post!!
Oh my gosh I loved reading this haha!! I will talk Game of Thrones theories with you alllllll dayyyyy longggggg. And New Jersey and basically everything you said (except Tom Brady LOL). Great idea with the posts, off to read the other two! 🙂 Our Marry/Kiss/Kill are the same btw 😉
Omfg how did I forget freaking Game of Thrones and Maggie in my fandoms/things to talk about!? I’m such a doof.
I also love your zombie question. I LOLed hahahaha
Omg it makes me so happy that you love Friday Night Lights! Who do you like better: Saracen or Riggins??
Those gifs are perfect! And YES to Uprooted. Also, I volunteer to be your guinea pig for any and all croissant experiments.
I loved Uprooted too!! I also prefer fantasy .Something about reading about something completely different then the life I read is such a thrill!! I’m not going to lie, when I read your Zombie Apocalypse kit and got to the Velveeta Cheese I spit Pepsi all over the place!
Thanks so much for this post. I’ve been wondering what exactly “getting to know you” consists of, so thank you for laying it all out there.
The Sky is Everywhere is one of my all-time favorite standalones also! What did you think of I’ll Give You the Sun?
Yay for Ross! He’d definitely be the Friends character I would date. I’m one for the nerds! I love that food is on your list of things that can get you talking because I love food. Especially cheese. Anyone who doesn’t like cheese is not a person I need in my life. And holy cow I am so so soooo excited for A Study in Charlotte. I have a feeling it will be amazing!!
Well, I know books are practical in a zombie apocalypse! I would take a few… boxes with me when that happens
Haha yes!!!!! Kill Loki! Can’t stand him at all!
” I think Tom Brady knew about those footballs.” YEAH HE DID.
I hate zombies too! I can’t watch movies with them, or books or anything. Though I dislike them because I’m a scaredy-cat. 😀
I am totally uncreative when it comes to blog posts as well. I am working on coming up with more creative post ideas, but it has been a challenge. I’m hoping to get better at this in the new year.
I love The Scorpio Races. It made my list of top books from 2015.
I don’t know much about zombies either. Most of what I know comes from my students who tell me that if the zombie apocalypse ever happened we would all run into the mountains and somehow survive just because that is how we do things in Montana. I’m not sure that is entirely reasonable logic, but they do know more about the topic than I do.
Thanks for sharing!
I love all things zombies and you need to destroy their brains to kill them, so think a stab to the head or shooting them. Pretty nasty stuff. You can smack them with one of your canned goods lol.
And oh man, I am SO EXCITED for A Court of Mist and Fury. I’m going to reread ACOTAR (again HA) before it comes out and I can’t wait!
Ooooooh, I do love a map in a book.
I love Outlander as well! I just started the books and show last year an it’s got such an entertaining storyline with great characters have well! Have you seen the Outlander coloring book? I want to get my hands one since the pictures are so amazing! It’s very cool that you got meet Leigh Barudo! I haven’t read any of her books yet, but I plan to start one early next year.
I feel like I’ve interacted with (or even lurked around) Alyssa and Brittany more than you, but reading these posts, you’re actually the one I have the most in common with. I’m a baseball fan too (Cardinals), I’m not a Friends fan (I would probably like it, it’s more due to lack of interest in actually taking the time to watch it), and I love cooking and stationery.
I do like zombies though. I’m not a huge zombie genre fan or anything, but I like The Walking Dead and I’ve read a few books. And I don’t read fantasy. I want to like it but I just haven’t found that one book to draw me in. Throne of Glass is often mentioned as a gateway book but I put it on hiatus three times before admitting to myself that it’s probably a DNF.
Great post! Thanks for sharing so much about yourself with all of us! I think this is an amazing project that is building so many friendships and making for a warm and accepting community! Keep up all of the amazing work!
SO jealous that you’ve met Rick Riordan! I really want to meet him someday. Also, just wanted to say I love you (and the girls) and y’all are ROCK STARS for taking the reins on such a positive event in our community! <3
L❤VE that you answered my marry, kiss, kill question! Obviously I agree with you 😉
Ahh A STUDY IN CHARLOTTE sounds so good! I love all things Sherlock Holmes and am really hoping to find the time during the holidays to go back and read the original stories again. Have you read any of them?
Yes yes yes to Ross! I’d be a little torn between him and Chandler, but Ross is so smart and funny and sweet and quirky…but I’m more like Monica than I am Rachel so I might lean more toward Chandler! I only watch FRIENDS casually as well, so a lot of the jokes go over my head, too.
Great post! It was so nice to get to know you a bit more 🙂 I haven’t read any of Riodan’s books yet (I know, le gasp!), but I am planning to! As soon as we move and settle in and I can finally order the boxed sets I’ve been eyeing 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing this!
I know from experience what an awesome Secret Santa you are! That Harry Potter bookmark is still my favorite bookmark! I think OTSP Secret Sister is such a sweet idea and it is great that the three of you came together to put that on. Each round I considered it and think maybe next time. Since my goal is to get to know a few more people through blogging next year, I am strongly considering joining. I love the TBTB Secret Santa and can’t imagine the fun it would be to buy for someone and get to know them for a couple of months. Good luck with the next round!
“I’m not a person who can wait for all the books to come out before I start them.”
I haaate waiting on a cliffhanger, so I always try to wait for a series to be done before I read it. But it’s so much harder than it used to be before I joined the book blogging world. Back when I was waiting for HP to be done, I had one or two people bugging me about it, but for the most part it was pretty easy to just ignore everything HP-related and then read all 7 books at once. Now, though, I feel so out of the loop! And sometimes I just can’t stop myself… like with The Passage (3rd book finally coming out next year!) and The Name of the Wind (still no end in sight!).
You are now one of my new favorite people because you don’t support New England sports. I’m from New England and I will always root for NY teams. Go Yankees!!!
And happy friendaversary to you and Alyssa…that’s adorable 🙂
Oh, I would love to read A Study in Charlotte. Pretty much anything related to Sherlock Holmes is a go for me. haha It sounds like a really good book though! The biggest author I’ve met? Probably John Green. It was really quick, but he was still quite sweet and he said he liked my sweater, so hey, there’s that!

Hey Amy, Happy New Year! I’m very excited for 2016. Uprooted was awesome! After devouring A Court of Thorns and Roses, I got into this whole fairy tale re-telling kick, and someone recommend it to me. I would love to see her do another spin on a different fairy tale. It’s okay if you’re not a big Friends fan. Most of my actually friends, don’t even watch the tv show. And my co-workers are more into Seinfeld. I love friends…still looking for a good comedy show that I like just as good.
Oh my-That Dumblore and Snape GIF!!!!! LOL, love it!!
I am right there with you in fantasy and what you said for favorite genre. Those deep, epic fantasy books are the best! Although I still need to read Outlander. I have been meaning to for a few years now, ever since a lady I met while serving Jury duty talked about it (gotta love those unique places to talk books). I just haven’t gotten around to starting it yet. Etsy shopping= Lots of fun and lots of trouble with my husband at the same time. But “window” shopping there is fun too and always leaves me happy over all the creative craftiness of others.
I’m right with you on zombies. It’s a struggle, because I review horror movies, and I always have people recommending me zombie movies and I feel like I have to have a kind of disclaimer like “No zombies, no robots, and aliens are taken on a case by case basis.” Also, I love Jeffrey Dean Morgan and I was very proud to once be able to say that I’d seen everything he was in (even the bad ones), but now he’s on The Walking Dead and I’m like… I don’t think I can do that to myself. But I’ll look at all the nice gifs on Tumblr to make up for it.
I love some Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire theories, though. I got the World of Ice and Fire for my birthday this year and I have to say that it created even more questions and wild theory-crafting than it fixed. It’s dangerous… to talk to me about theories… but you’re welcome to anytime!
I think a flame thrower during a zombie apocalypse is an excellent choice 😄 Have you read all of Maggie Stiefvaters’ books? I’ve read the Raven Cycle and The Scorpio Races and love them all so much! I’ve just ordered Ballad, have you read it? Do you have a favourite character from the Raven Cycle? I love them all but Gansey is definitely my favourite.
I love your GIFs! I have trouble coming up with creative blog posts too. I don’t know if I’d date any of the Friends guys, but I think Ross appeals the most to me too. I love football and hate the Patriots and Tom Brady. It sounds like you do too! What do you think of the Panthers this year? I normally pull for the Broncos, but the Panthers are my home team. I hate to say it, but before this year, I rarely even watched their games. They never seemed to win. Then this year they go 13-0, before getting beaten in game 14? Crazy!
Hi Amy!
Thanks so much for being one of the awesome hosts on this project. I am looking forward to signing up again 🙂 I LOVE your answer for Marry, Kiss Kill. I just finished binge watching Outlander this week. I have not read the books, their size intimidates me a bit but I am thinking about maybe listening to the audio for them.
I agree on the characters that live in gray areas. Isnt’ that why The Darkling from Shadow & Bone is so beloved? 🙂 And speaking of S&B, I’m happy to see that you met Leigh Bardugo. Isn’t she fabulous? I had the honor of meeting her when she came to Houston for a book signing, and I developed such a girl crush on her. Haha!
I keep seeing nice reviews for Uprooted, which makes me think I should read it sooner rather than later. The Scorpio Races really surprised me! I picked it up this past year and couldn’t put it down. Those horses are truly nightmarish!
Thank you so much for this post! I wasn’t 100% sure how to get to know you a bit better. I would love to sign up for the OTSP SecretSister this round.
I also met Leigh Bardugo and had the hardest time keeping it together. I love her work so much! One of my all time favorites stand -alones is The Scorpio Races, and I’ve been fortunate enough to meet Maggie Stiefvater twice; she is insanely awesome.
I am trying to get more involved in the book community and this sounds like the perfect place to start 🙂
Hello! I also love Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Fantasy books and your gifs are frickin’ hilarious. 😀 I totally feel you about diving into a fantasy world – if it clicks it’s one of the best things ever. 🙂
I’m so jealous that you’ve met Leigh Bardugo! I don’t get to meet many authors myself.
Also, I just found out about the Secret Sister project! And the level of detail that the 3 of you have put into it is pretty amazing. I love the idea of getting to use my stationary to talk about bookish things. (& it’s cute stationary too with pandas and sheeps 😊)
Do you have a fave fantasy novel or series? I’m a long time LOTR fan, myself.
