Something I discovered while doing some TBR research for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday? I’ve gone on LOTS of bookish first dates, friends. I’ve read so many book 1s! Every time I would come to a series book I’d be like, “Oh! That series! Always meant to read it!” only to notice immediately after that I HAVE started reading it. I just haven’t progressed yet. But we all know about the way series flood the YA market, so don’t you fret, my lovelies. I’ve got a nice big list of series that I haven’t read yet for you.
The Immortals by Tamora Pierce
Wild Magic, Wolf-Speaker, Emperor Mage, The Realms of the Gods
I’ve actually managed to read more of Tamora’s books than I originally thought, but this series remains untouched. Like all of Tamora’s books, it takes place in Tortall, but as best I can tell, this book has no main character who has anything to do with the main lineage–Alanna, George, Beka. I’m probably wrong, though. Most exciting? This book seems to be heavy on the MAGIC!!
Daughter of the Lioness by Tamora Pierce
Trickster’s Choice, Trickster’s Queen
Now THESE books are about a direct descendent of Alanna, the heroine of Tamora’s Song of the Lioness series, Alianne. She’s captured by pirates and sold into slavery! OOOOOOHH!
Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
Leviathan, Behemoth, Goliath
SIGH. Scott Westerfeld. I’ve read NOTHING by him. Nothing. Admittedly, steampunk–this series’ genre–is not usually my thing, but the covers are gorgeous, there’s ILLUSTRATIONS inside, and I’m kind of digging the alternate WWI history vibe here. That’s not a time period I’ve read about often. Plus, there seems to be a badass young lady in it: Deryn, that BAMF on the cover in the aviator cap and goggles, all Amelia Earhart style. GET IT, GIRL.
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Uglies, Pretties, Specials, Extras
I told you: I’ve read nothing by Scott Westerfeld. I’ve tried to read UGLIES before, but got distracted by other things and never checked it out of the library again. I’m definitely intrigued, though. I’m probably the only person to not have read this dystopian that kind of skewers modern obsession with looks. I’m a fan of that for sure.
Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier
Daughter of the Forest, Son of the Shadows, Child of the Prophecy, Heir to Sevenwaters, Seer of Sevenwaters, Flame of Sevenwaters
Y’all, I am about to knock this series right off this list. I checked the first book, DAUGHTER OF THE FOREST, out of the library this week, and I am STOKED to read it. So many people have been touting this series–a historical-fantasy set in ancient Ireland–that I have majorly high expectations. CAN’T. EVEN. WAIT.
For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund
For Darkness Shows the Stars, Across a Star-Swept Sea
Dystopian retelling of Jane Austen’s PERSUASION? WHY HAVEN’T I READ THIS. I’m also really intrigued by this whole Luddite nobility angle this one is rocking. THAT sounds very interesting indeed. I got a copy of this at BEA last year so, you know, no excuses really.
Discworld by Terry Pratchett
Psh. I’m not listing all these books. Friends, there’s 40 books in this series right now.
Nothing quite like setting yourself an almost impossible task, friends. FORTY BOOKS. I mean honestly. I’m not even sure I could explain what this series is about, except to say that it’s a fantasy and there’s a wizard and it’s supposed to be funny-ish…. It sounds like it’s full of things I enjoy, so it’s always in the back of my mind as something I should TRY to read.
Abhorsen by Garth Nix
Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen, Clariel (out in 2014)
This list is overpopulated by fantasy series I haven’t started yet, and this one is one of the few that have been on my TBR since before I remembered how much I loved fantasy (this was only about 5 years ago). Explaining an entire series, especially one that’s not finished yet, in one little paragraph is hard, a fact that is only compounded by my NOT HAVING READ IT YET. But high fantasy, magic, missing family, danger, and zombies? Fantasy zombies? Why not. Yes please.
The Demon’s Lexicon Trilogy by Sarah Rees Brennan
The Demon’s Lexicon, The Demon’s Covenant, The Demon’s Surrender
I am a HUGE fan of the TV show Supernatural, and this series about magical demon-fighting brothers has always reminded me of my beloved Winchesters. I own the first book in this series as well so I don’t know what I’ve been waiting for. Incidentally, I could have also included Sarah Rees Brennan’s The Lyburn Legacy series that just started last year on this list, too. Honorable Mention.
Across the Universe by Beth Revis
Across the Universe, A Million Suns, Shades of Earth
I’ve decided that I have the best intentions when it comes to starting new series, friends. Because I own a copy of this book, too. I’m always looking to read more sci-fi, a genre that I often overlook for other things, and the idea of this whole book taking place on a spaceship really piques my interest. Plus, there’s a mystery angle, PLUS a main character who shares my name. Always gets a bonus point.
Blood of Eden by Julie Kagawa
The Immortal Rules, The Eternity Cure
I have read and LOVED Julie Kagawa’s Iron Fey series, and I’ve already started it’s companion series, too. As much faith as I have in Julie Kagawa, I’m always really hesitant to hop on the vampire train again. This series has a slightly different spin, being about dystopian vampires, and I got a copy of this one at BEA last year as well, so I’m going to give it the ol’ college try hopefully soon.
Bloodlines, The Golden Lily, The Indigo Spell
I read and DEVOURED Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series last year, and knowing that this companion series features Sydney and ADRIAN gets me all excited. It’s really only a matter of time before I start reading this series, friends. Although I do wish that “Who Is Marcus Finch?” thing would just die already.
I’ll be honest: the Immortals quartet is one of the lesser Tortall series, but only because the second book is my least favorite Tamora Pierce book ever. It’s just…not very good! Which is weird. But then the third book is one of my all-time favorite Tamora Pierce books so there you go. (They’re totally linked to the original Alanna books.) (And once you’re done with the Tortall books, you should check out her Circle Universe books—different, but also good.) (I’m maybe a huge Tamora Pierce fangirl.)
The Leviathan and Sevenwaters series made my list today, also! I was really impressed with For Darkness Shows the Stars and Across the Universe—I’d recommend them both.
Confession: I haven’t started the Bloodlines series either. I tried, right after the first book came out, but it didn’t work for me. Now that some time has passed, I’m going to try to start them again this spring! I love Richelle’s writing, so I’m hoping to like these. (I would be really sad if I didn’t!)
ALSO. I haven’t read the Demon’s Lexicon series by Sarah, although I REALLY SHOULD since it makes you think of SPN. I HAVE read Unspoken though, and it was quite good!
You should go get the Uglies series and read it. They are fast books, yet have incredible characters and really make you think about the world today. It is absolutely wonderful. Across the Universe is also great and they are also all out so you can start and finish the series (a big plus!).
So many of these are on my list…
Oh I adore your list. I loved all of Tamora Pierce’s series so so so much when I was younger, they just have this really special place in my heart. Can’t wait to see if you get to them this year and read your reviews!
Great picks! I’ve read all of Pierce’s Tortall series and the Wild Magic quartet is by far my favorite. I love protagonist Daine and her wild magic abilities to talk to and connect with animals. It’s really good! The Sevenwaters and Abhorsen series are also great fantasy series and Uglies is a fantastic sci fi/dystopian series! I hope you’re able to get to all of them soon. I’ve been meaning to read Leviathan and the Demon’s Lexicon series for a while now too.
My Top Ten Tuesday
I know Alyssa will be excited for you to start Daughter of the Forest!!!!!
I’m supposed to read Sabriel for Forever YA book club in a few months so I’m glad to see this series on your list!! I hadn’t heard of it before 🙂
So many good choices. I have started some of them. But I have not heard of For Darkness Shows the Stars which now much go on my list. 🙂
I may have a lot to say about your list (all good, encouraging things, of course), so I’m just going to through that out there before I start making all my comments…
THE IMMORTALS is a series you MUST read. It is actually my favorite Tamora Pierce series of all-time (at this particular moment anyway), and just the thought of it makes me want to read it again. Daine is my favorite Pierce heroine. She’s very unique, and she’s pretty kick-ass, if I do say so myself.
DAUGHTER OF THE LIONESS is so fabulous, because of course, it’s about Alanna’s daughter. That alone is enough endorsement for that particular duo, I presume? I’ve only read these two once each, so I may have to read it again.
UGLIES is a series I’ve started, but I’m not particularly enamored enough to pick it up again. It was good and different, but it wasn’t exactly a book that called to me. I know a lot of people enjoyed it, but I guess I was just okay with it.
SEVENWATERS is a series I’m determined to start, as it’s received awesome endorsements. It does sound like a series I’d enjoy reading, and I think that I ought to find a copy of the first book soon!
FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS is such a beautifully written book, and I’m excited about the companion novel. Honestly, it does take time to become really invested in this one, but it did manage to bring me to tears at a couple of points so… You should read it.
ABHORSEN is such a surprisingly wonderful series! There’s a new book (I think it’s a companion) out soon-ish, so you best get to reading. It’s a pretty interesting fantasy novel, I’ll give you that, and the lore/characters are awesome. I’ve read this one a couple of times.
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE is a series that I’m guilty of not starting yet, even though I do own the first two books. That must be remedied, and soon, as a lot of people really enjoyed this and I adore Beth!
Girl, you will LOVE The Immortal Rules series! I was super hesitant to read another vampire book, but this one was really blown out of the water. It reminded me just how scary and bad and evil vampires could be – no sparkling here!
Haven’t read any of the other series you mentioned, but definitely want to! Hopefully we can get to them!
There are so many of these I want to start! Including, but not limited to, The Immortals by Tamora Pierce! I have the first two books so that’s helpful. I have to finish Alanna first though, dagnabbit.
