Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I Resolve to Read in 2013

Top Ten Tuesday: Wednesday Edition!
So, this list got out of hand almost immediately. I hardly had to think about it before I had nearly 20 books listed and no idea which ones to cut. Then I realized that I essentially had two lists: one list of 10 books that I either own copies of or are at least already released that I haven’t read yet, and another list of 10 books that are coming out this year that I simply MUST read because they sound super. I WILL READ THEM ALL I SWEAR.
Books That Are Out Already
Bitterblue: Graceling Realm #3 by Kristin Cashore. Already on this one, thanks to the Cashore Goodtimes readalong! I’m anxious in good and bad ways to read this one. Good, because HELLO, KRISTIN CASHORE! Fantasy! Bitterblue, Katsa, and Po! Bad because I’ve read some meh reviews from people whose opinions I trust totally, and also because it’s the LAST BOOK in this stellar series.
Days of Blood and Starlight: Daughter of Smoke and Bone #2 by Laini Taylor. Umm, obviously. Laini Taylor writes so beautifully and with lots of emotions and intensity. I loved DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE, and I can’t wait to dive into this one and savor it. I own it, so there really is no excuse.
The Crimson Crown: The Demon King #4 by Cinda Williams Chima. Friends, this series is so great. You know why? Because each book improves on the one before it, so that by the time you’re ready to read this last book in the series, things are at a fever pitch: there’s political drama, escalating violence, romantic tension, secrets, lies, death, AND ALL THE THINGS. Another one I own and therefore have no excuse not to read on the sooner side of ASAP.
Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler. It is a crime, I’m sure, that I haven’t read any Sarah Ockler books. But thanks to my Broke and Bookish Secret Santa I now have a copy of this one to have and hold forever! I’m really looking forward to discovering an author I should already know!
Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta. SIGH. This book. I’ve owned it for going on two years now and I just can’t get myself to pick it up and make it through the first 100 pages or so. That changes this year.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Ditto to the above, minus the “I’ve tried to read it before but couldn’t slog through the beginning” part. I’ve never even cracked this book open, despite it being on my shelf for possibly longer than any other YA book I own.
Mastiff: Beka Cooper #3 by Tamora Pierce. It’s beyond ridiculous that I haven’t read this yet. BEYOND.
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein. More ridiculousness. I have it on my shelf, I know that it’s amazing beyond description. Now I just need to make time for it. I love what I’ve heard about the moving relationship between the two main characters, and the unreliability of the main narrator.
2013 Releases
(This list is sooooooo abbreviated, I can’t even tell you. Even though I just did.)
Just One Day: Just One Day #1 by Gayle Forman. If I hear one more amazing thing about this book I might explode from WANT.
The Archived: The Archived #1 by Victoria Schwab. I love Victoria Schwab. I was really impressed and pleased with her debut, THE NEAR WITCH. But this new series she’s starting about a world where people become books when they die, and a young girl who must watch over them and save them from a person or thing who is removing pages sounds awesome.
Revel by Maurissa Guibord. I think this book just sounds creepy and FANTASTIC. It’s about a young girl who goes to live on this mysterious, hidden island in Maine where there are Greek symbols on the buildings and some secret, CRAY shenanigans going on at night. There’s monsters and a lobster fisherman and family secrets and danger. And the cover is gorgeous.
Strands of Bronze and Gold by Jane Nickerson. A Southern gothic retelling of the Bluebeard tale? STOP IT. I’m in.
Going Vintage by Lindsey Leavitt. Have I told you guys lately how much I enjoyed SEAN GRISWOLD’S HEAD? No? Well I did. It caught me by surprise with its depth and feeling. This book, about a young girl who’s boyfriend cheats on her so she decides to unplug from literally every electronic thing, sounds super fun.
Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins. Because DUH. I’ll read all of Stephanie Perkins’ words.
Dark Triumph: His Fair Assassin #2 by Robin LaFevers. So, GRAVE MERCY was one of my favorite books of 2012. It was full of political drama, vaguely supernatural doings, and had incredibly strong characters in Ismae and Duval. I’m beside myself with anticipation for book #2, which is about the slightly unhinged Sybella.
The Lost Sun: The United States of Asgard #1 by Tessa Gratton. The Goodreads synopsis of this book contains the following Amy buzz words: Neil Gaiman, NORSE MYTHOLOGY, berserking, haunted pasts, a PROPHETESS, a missing god, ROAD TRIP (a NORSE MYTHOLOGY ROAD TRIP. I am dying), and more. MORE. I can’t deal with this.
i know EXACTLY what you mean about Jellicoe Road! It’s on my 2013 list too!
Right?! Every. Year. I tell myself I’m going to read it, and every year passes and I’m like, “Wow. Still haven’t read Jellicoe Road.” I think I’m going to try the audio. I’ve heard good things about it. Let’s do this thing!
There is so much awesomeness on this list that I can hardly bear it! I need to read The Book Thief as well, since I own that one and haven’t gotten to it yet.
Isn’t it crazy how we haven’t read that book yet? I feel like I need to be in the right mood, though. But it’s happening! I SWEAR!
And I’m so excited about everything on my list!! This was one of the easiest TTTs I’ve put together, haha.
Oh! Sarah Oakler newbie! I really liked 20-Boy Summer but, the best is yet to come for you I think, because I read Bittersweet last week and really really really really loved it! 🙂 Also Code Name Verity is on my list as well! 🙂 And I borrowed the Book Thief from Magan only eons ago and I haven’t picked it up. I’m terrible!

I hear great things about most Sarah Ockler books, so I’m really looking forward to it. I have Bittersweet as well, hanging out on my shelves for ages, so I’m going to get into that one too! I love me some hockey players! (There’s hockey in that book, right?)
With Code Name Verity and The Book Thief, I have to get myself psyched up. But I can’t wait to read them!!
Same here, I loved Graceling and Fire..but Bitterblue is such a long book I keep putting other books ahead!
eeep! I totally know what you mean. I still can’t wait to read it though. Hopefully it lives up to my expectations and goes quickly, although I’ve heard the opposite (about going quickly). Whatever. I’m sure it’s a fitting conclusion. I hope you get to it this year as well! 🙂
I didn’t have any of these books on my TTT post, but that’s only because I tried to limit myself to books that had been on my TBR the longest. Butttt if I had included new purchases or I-bought-this-two-months-ago-and-couldn’t-wait-to-read-so-why-haven’t-I-started-it-yet books, it would also include Bitterblue and Days of Blood and Starlight. I’m really not sure why I haven’t gotten around to them yet. Anywaysssss, I’m SO excited to see Jellicoe Road, The Book Thief, and Code Name Verity on your list. LOVE THEM ALL. SO MUCH. Hope you love them, too 🙂
