So. Ok. 2013 is going to be the year of the awesome books, I can just FEEL IT. I am looking forward to so many books I could never even hope to list them all here, even though I tried by listing more than 10. But these are just a few of the 2013 releases that I’m drooling over the most. Seriously. DROOLING. Like, I’m afraid for my keyboard right now.

Book cover for Just One Day by Gayle Forman

Just One Day (Just One Day #1) by Gayle Forman (January 8, 2013)

I’ve loved every Gayle Forman book I’ve ever read (only two, but hush. They were great), so I’m incredibly excited to read her newest duo about a young American girl abroad who meets this guy and they have a MOMENT that basically lasts all night, but then they go their separate ways. This first book is from the girl, Lulu’s, point of view. The second, out in 2014, is from the guy’s. Hearing EXCELLENT things, friends.

Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins (May 7, 2013)

No cover yet for this hot potato. Guys, I am almost literally dying to read this book. First of all, I will read all of Stephanie Perkins’ words, even though I think her next set is going to be about ZOMBIES and we all know I don’t really do those. Second of all, I am beside myself with eagerness to read about Isla, Anna’s quiet classmate at SOAP who had a MONSTER crush on St. Clair’s friend, Josh.

Book cover for Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers

Dark Triumph: His Fair Assassin #2 by Robin LaFevers (April 2, 2013)

The first book in this series, GRAVE MERCY, was outstanding. It blended solid historical fiction with some intense, vaguely paranormalish fantasy. Friends, it was a nearly 600 page book and I couldn’t put it down. I’m having some really high hopes for DARK TRIUMPH because I need more of this world, with medieval French politics and scheming and the sisterhood.

The House of Hades: The Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan (October 2013)

Another cover no-show, but let me tell you all something: Maybe I’m a bit biased because I will always be a huge fan of Percy Jackson, but THE MARK OF ATHENA, the book before this one here, was one of the best Percy books EVER. Seriously. I just really loved it, and I thought the jeopardy in it was super. Percy and his friends are growing up and dealing with more dangerous things in more grown-up ways. I can’t even imagine what kind of ridiculous, intense things are going to happen in THE HOUSE OF HADES. Because trust me: that’s the only way things could be.

Book cover for Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Scarlet: The Lunar Chronicles #2 by Marissa Meyer (February 5, 2013)

I’ve actually already had a chance to read SCARLET and I was blown away AGAIN by how truly remarkable Marissa Meyer’s series is. Just…the world-building and the emotional drama, and the characters. They’re all so excellent! I can’t wait to have my own real copy so that I can reread these gems OFTEN.

Book cover for Prodigy by Marie Lu

Prodigy: Legend #2 by Marie Lu (January 29, 2013)

Ok, so I’ve already gotten a chance to read this one, too, thanks to BEA, and consider yourself warned: These books just keep getting better. I really loved LEGEND because the characters endeared themselves to me. The things that happen to Day and June in PRODIGY up the ante in a big way.

The History of Luck/The Invisible Museum by Jandy Nelson (August 15, 2013)

OMG I’M DYING I CAN’T DEAL I WILL NOT TURN OFF MY CAPSLOCK BECAUSE JANDY NELSON’S NEXT BOOK HAS A PUB DATE. (On Amazon. For the kindle version. DO NOT rain on my parade, ok?) I don’t even know what it’s about. I don’t really care. I love it already.

Book cover for The Flame in the Mist by Kit Grindstaff

The Flame in the Mist by Kit Grindstaff (April 9, 2013)

Not quite sure if this one is MG or YA, but whatevs. It’s a fantasy about a ginger girl with a mysterious past who is prophesied to save her world. She has pet rats, and there are ghosts, and her “friend” who is a boy is trying to help her/possibly also get some (I don’t know. That last bit could be a lie). Also, I am REALLY digging this title! Very evocative, no?

Book cover for Prophecy by Ellen Oh

Prophecy: The Dragon King Chronicles by Ellen Oh (January 2, 2013)

WHOA. So I’m not getting too excited by the fact that this series title invokes DRAGONS because I think this one is more about DEMONS. Which is cool with me. It’s also about a young girl demon-slayer/bodyguard to the prince. All this crazy shizz with demons starts happening, and Kira (that’s the demon-slayer bodyguard) has to run away with the prince. Obviously, there’s also a PROPHECY, HELLO!

Book cover for This Is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith

This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith (April 2, 2013)

Nothing quite like a little e-mail romance, friends. And I’m sure that Jennifer E. Smith is going to bring the swoons. But can we talk for a second about the fact that Graham, the main guy, has a PET PIG NAMED WILBUR?? *DIES* I think pigs are super cute and HELLO, WILBUR?! You all know my soft spot for CHARLOTTE’S WEB. Also, this book takes place partially in Maine, a place I’ve never been but think is beautiful and would love to go. And, you know, there’s the secrets and the romances and the feels, too.

Book cover for Handbook for Dragon Slayers by Merrie Haskell

Handbook for Dragon Slayers by Merrie Haskell (May 28, 2013)

Why is this book not being shouted about from rooftops? I feel like the cover is kind of FANTASTIC, plus there’s DRAGONS, a runaway princess, enchanted horses, and lots of other fantasy goodies. I really, REALLY enjoyed Merrie Haskell’s book THE PRINCESS CURSE, so I’m looking forward to this one.

All That Was Lost by Trish Doller (2013)

I feel like the title of this book either has changed or will be changing. I can’t remember which, although I think it’s the latter. Doesn’t matter, really, because Trish Doller is, even after just one book (that would be SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL), very good at writing about intense feelings and family drama and young people coping with difficult things. I’m very much eagerly anticipating her second book.

CRAP! So I thought that I would be finished with all the ANTICIPATION after only 12 books. I thought I could contain myself. I also often tell myself lies if I think it will suit my whims, so I’m going to give a few more because I can. Just a quick little list. Again.

Star Cursed: The Cahill Witch Chronicles #2 by Jessica Spotswood  (June 18, 2013)

I’m finding that I keep thinking about how much I enjoyed the alternate paranormal history in this series so far, and how much I am gripped by the cliffhanger ending in book 1. NOT A FAN of the new covers, though. NOT ONE BIT.

Untitled Divergent #3 by Veronica Roth (September 26, 2013)

DUH. Four. Tris. Danger, secrets, and drama at every turn?

The Art of Wishing by Lindsay Ribar (March 21, 2013)

Debut awesomeness about a girl who falls in love with a GENIE. Like, from a lamp. Or, in this case, a ring.

Strands of Bronze and Gold: Strands of Bronze and Gold #1 by Jane Nickerson (March 12, 2013)

A retelling of the Bluebeard tale, but this time with gingers on a plantation in Mississippi in some past time. Yes, please, I WILL read this book.

Comments

  1. Gahhh I totally should have added Just One Day to my list. I’m seeing everyone else mention it and it sounds SO GOOD! Great list.
    My Top 10

  2. Ummmm YES TO ALL, PLEASE! Especially Just One Day and Dark Triumph!!

  3. I really want to read Grave Mercy so I can read Dark Triumph! Prophecy was also on my list. Strands of Bronze and Gold also sounds really great– I never would have guessed it was a Bluebeard retelling from the title. Great list.

    • I hope you get to read Grave Mercy soon! It was really wonderful. The characters in it are THE BOMB. And when you read Grave Mercy, you get to meet the main character of Dark Triumph, and girl is INTENSE. 🙂

  4. ‘Just One Day’ & ‘This is What Happy Looks Like’ both sound so good! My TTT list: http://aliceinreaderland.wordpress.com/2012/11/27/top-ten-most-anticipated-books-for-2013/

  6. Isla and Scarlet and Prodigy and Dark Triumph, can it be 2013 now please???

  7. I’m excited for a lot of these and thanks for alerting me to some I didn’t know about-2013 is going to be awesome!

  8. I pretty much want to get every single book on your list. The only exception is the second book in this His Fair Assassin series since, well, I have not started it yet. It does sound utterly fantastic though!

Before I end this comment, I must say – all these fantasy books are EXCITING me. I want to go back to my reading roots and devour them ALL.
