Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I’d Want on a Deserted Island

I have to say, there are some times when I seriously think a deserted island would be AWESOME. Then I think of Lost and am like, “NO THANK YOU.” Because aside from being totally alone and in the middle of nowhere, with no food or potable water, I’d get bored pretty quickly. And I’m not easily bored (this is also sometimes known as “lazy and unmotivated”). But if I had a choice to be stuck on a deserted island with theses books? Well, that improves things significantly. Forgive me if I go for bulk a little bit here, friends. I’ve got lots of time to waste, and I’d hate to bring a book that I can read in no time and then be all, “EFF. That only took 3 hours. What am I going to do now?”

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

Obviously. If I could count this whole series as one book, I’d bring it all. Or as much of the series as George has written so far anyway. Nothing like a good, absorbing, complex fantasy to while away the hours. And even though I liked A STORM OF SWORDS for its HUGE plot twists and WTFery, I can’t read things out of order.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Very simply, I ADORE this book. The whole series, really, although I would say that the first two or three books are the best of the lot. But this one has historical fiction, Scottish people, hot gingers, drama, sexytimes, and time travel. Also, it’s long.

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

I often find myself craving a reread of this book just about once a year. (No lie, I’m gearing up to reread it again soon. Like, next.) If I had to live on a deserted island for an unknown amount of time, I’d inevitably find myself craving this atmosphere. And Puck and Sean.

Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson

New fave! I loved this book to pieces, and it suits my sometimes pensive, thoughtful moods with its beautiful words and heartbreaking love story.

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

WORD for kick-ass historical fiction/fantasies with outstanding heroines and relationships that take time and are built on respect. Also, political twistiness is one of my favorite things to read, especially if I’m in a thinking mood, and GRAVE MERCY has loads of that, too.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

New fave #2! Kvothe is just one in a sadly short line of gingers I adore. Reading about him and his childhood and his early days at the university are amazing. Patrick Rothfuss built basically the perfect fantasy world: it’s fully fleshed out with it’s own totally absorbing reality and details.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

So, I’m reading SCARLET right now and DYING because it’s so outstanding, and it’s making me remember how much I freaking LOVED CINDER. It was so fresh and engaging and clever. I could definitely get behind reading this on a deserted island.

The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

Another book that I just couldn’t imagine not having with me so that I could reread it all the time. If I couldn’t be on a deserted island with Joe and Lennie and those poems, then I’d be very unhappy.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K Rowling

I simply cannot go without any Harry, and I’m thinking this is a good one to haul with me because it has the climax, you know? All the pieces fall together. It’s intense and emotional and, importantly, long. Also, I ADORE IT.

Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Apparently I’m bringing ALL THE FANTASIES with me to the deserted island. It must be something with needing to occupy myself with totally different places and atmospheres. I could read about Katsa and Po for days. Which is a handy thing, considering that I would HAVE days at my disposal.
