Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I’d Play Hooky With

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. It’s awesome. Every Tuesday, the lovely folks over at The Broke and the Bookish post a top ten list topic so that book lovers like you and me can pour over our shelves and make our own lists. You can check out all the other Top Ten Tuesday‘s on their site!

***

Playing hooky rocks my world, guys. Nice day, spring is springing or the beach is calling and BOOM! Mental health day. When I sat down to write this list, I couldn’t decide if I was going to pick books to reread on my hooky day or books that I want to just dive into and spend all day catching up on, so I did both. I’m a BIG rereader, guys, and I like my rereads to be mostly happy, fun, fast-paced kind of deals. So that’s mostly the rereads here. The new books here are bigger ones or books in big series that I WANT to start or continue. Basically, I think this list is made of win and awesome and I want to read all of these books now. Yay!

Book cover for Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan MatsonAmy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson. Can’t have hooky day without a road trip. It’s against all of my principles. Plus, this one has a killer romance, one of my all-time YA boyfriends, a main character who shares my name, and PLAYLISTS with music that is actually awesome and fun. YES TO ALL THIS.

The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson. SIGH. I want to play hooky with this book mostly because Book cover for The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy NelsonI want to play hooky with Joe in Gram’s garden, playing music, wandering into the woods, writing poetry, and basically being NOCAL hippies, except cleaner and not smelling like patchouli. Everything about this book is beautiful to me, and even though it comes from a sad place, I always seem to think of it as being a happy-making book because it makes my heart big. Bat, bat, bat.

Book cover for Legend by Marie Lu

Legend (Legend #1) by Marie Lu. I can seriously plow through this book in one day, the pace is so crazy and the characters are so complex and the action is so gripping. And let’s not short-change the world-building, either, which I think is solid here. LEGEND is one of my favorite dystopians. Day and June are such solid leads, I could read about them and their fledgling rebellion against the Republic any day.

Book cover for Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Angel (Infernal Devices #1) by Cassandra Clare. So I haven’t started this series yet, but I have the first two books sitting here, waiting to be cracked open. I feel so left out when people are all “#TeamJem!! NO! #TeamWill!!” because I DON’T HAVE A TEAM. WAH! But seriously, it took me two tries to get into Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series, but once I did, I was in it to win it with all of her books. I love the sound of the historical fiction aspect of this series, and of course, the mythology.

Book cover for The Exiled Queen by Cinda Williams ChimaThe Exiled Queen (Seven Realms #2) by Cinda Williams Chima. I literally just finished the first book in this series, THE DEMON KING, yesterday, and I can’t wait to get my grabby hands on books 2 and 3 so that I’m all caught up when book 4 comes out in October. This is some really solid high fantasy, friends, and it’s really hard to put down. Things left off at the end of book 1 with STUFF on the horizon, and I NEED to know what it is.

Book cover for Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols

Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols. So this one could basically stand in for any of Jennifer Echols’ romantic dramas, but if I’m being totally honest, this one is my favorite. I reread this one a lot, actually, because it’s quick, hot, fun, and has great characters and good drama. Also, GREAT sexytimes. Jennifer Echols was MADE for hooky days.

Book cover for Graceling by Kristin CashoreGraceling (Seven Kingdoms #1) by Kristin Cashore. I was hoping to reread this book and FIRE before BITTERBLUE comes out in, oh, BARELY OVER ONE MONTH, but the odds, I fear, are not in my favor right now. I’d still play hooky with any of Kristin Cashore’s books because I think she’s BOSS and her books are just outstanding.

Poison Study (Study #1) by Maria V. Snyder. This book is in my Book cover for Poison Study by Maria V. Snyderpossession right now and I am chomping at the bit to read it. I keep hearing how it’s BANANAS fantasy with intrigue and drama and some MAJOR slow-burning romance. I love all of this. THEN! I saw someone compare GRAVE MERCY to this book, and I know that this is backwards of me since POISON STUDY came out first, but when I hear someone say, “This book reminded me of GRAVE MERCY,” I’m extra likely to check that book out. So. POISON STUDY + hooky day = time well spent, yes?

Book cover for The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren WilligPink Carnation series by Lauren Willig. I couldn’t pick just one of these books, guys (the 8th one in the main storyline just came out, plus there’s a Christmas book), except I probably wouldn’t reread THE SEDUCTION OF THE CRIMSON ROSE (the 4th one). Historical romances are some of my favorite books to read because they’re fun and dramatic and sexy and quick. The books in this series are all of my favorite things about this genre and so are hooky day MUSTS.

An Echo in the Bone (Outlander #7) by Diana Gabaldon. Outlander is one of my very favorite series, Book cover for An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldonguys, but I’ve been slacking something fierce on this most recent entry. And in truth, there’s NO WAY I could read it in one day. That’s pretty much impossible (the book’s ENORMOUS), but I want to read it so badly and I need some motivation. What better than a WHOLE DAY with nothing better to do, right? As long as I don’t get sucked in by one of these other books first.

Comments

  1. The Study series is great! And I’ve been meaning to read Seven Realms for a while now. Nice list!
    My top ten

    • I’m so excited to read the Study series!! You should definitely read Cinda Williams Chima. I’d been meaning to read that series for a while now and I was so glad that I finally got around to it!

  2. Great list. I should try at least one if not all 🙂

  3. I actually thought Clockwork Angel was a bit overrated. And everyone keeps telling me the other series is better, and that’s the one I haven’t read. But if we’re taking a vote I”m going with Team Jem. 😉

    • I honestly had to pick up City of Bones more than once because I had a hard time getting into it, but it really was good once I started. I’ve been hearing great things about Infernal Devices, but I think I’ve been hearing SUPER things about Clockwork Prince, the second book, so maybe that one is better. I need a team! (Even though I don’t usually do the official “team” thing.)

  4. Oooh, love your list! I’m the queen of slacking where Outlander is concerned – I’ve only read the first two! They’re such gargantuan books, I love them to pieces but they can be a bit exhausting in their brilliance. But I do love them.

And the Study and Pink Carnation series are two that I’ve been wanting to read as well. So many books, so little time!

    • Ahhh, Outlander. Outlander is the reason that my pulse races every time I hear of a book that has hot men in kilts in it. But I understand the slacking on big series. The whole Outlander series–that I’ve read–is awesome, but my favorites are definitely the first two. I hope you get to finish it though!
And Pink Carnation is so fun and romantic and enjoyable. Can’t recommend them enough!

  5. Ahh I love this list! The Sky is Everywhere was on my list too! And I love the Clockwork Prince, although it didn’t make the list this week. I’m going to try reading Amy and Rodger’s Epic Detour soon, I think, because a lot of people have recommended it. Thanks for the suggestions!

    • GAH! The Sky Is Everywhere is one of my all-time faves. Joe is one of my all-time YA boyfriends. That whole book is amazing.
I hope you read Amy & Roger, too! SUCH a great, fun, sweet book. Loved it!

  6. The Sky is Everywhere sounds great! Would love for you to hop on by.

  7. So many great books on this list! Going Too Far is my favorite from Jennifer Echols as well, and Poison Study is one of my all time favorites!:)

  8. I’ve just picked up Graceling from the library to give it a go – I couldn’t get into it the first time, but I’m hoping for better results this go ’round. 🙂 Lovely list!

  9. I really need to read The Sky Is Everywhere… Great picks!

  10. Love, love, LOVE your list! Amy & Roger, Going Too Far and The Pink Carnation series are utterly perfect choices. I have The Sky Is Everywhere here to read, I’ve heard so many amazing things about it!

    • Thank you!! I love all of those books SO MUCH. I hope you read The Sky Is Everywhere because it’s so lovely and sad and happy and beautiful! 🙂

  11. Great choices! I’m currently re-reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and am loving it just as much as I did the first time.
Here’s my Top Ten Tuesday Post 🙂

    • I’ve reread Outlander a couple of times, and you’re totally right: I enjoy it just as much each time I read it. That whole series is FAB, but the first two books are my favorites. 🙂

  12. I really need to read ‘Graceling’ and ‘The Sky is Everywhere’= looks amazing and whenever I see them in shops I always nearly buy them and then don’t…I WILL THOUGH!

    • AAH!! I don’t mean to pressure you into spending money but…PLEASE BUY THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE AND GRACELING. Ahem. They’re so good! You won’t regret it, I promise!

  13. I’m really looking forward to reading Legend by Marie Lu!

And I really hope you enjoy Poison Study by Maria Snyder – I completely devoured that book – the next one’s actually on my list! Hope you enjoy!

    • Legend was REALLY good! It surprised me how easily and quickly it sucked me in the first time I read it.
Poison Study is coming up next for me and I CAN’T WAIT!! 🙂
      Thanks for stopping by!

  14. Brilliant list. I to have had trouble with the Mortal Instruments series – I loved the first book, and then the second just lost me – though I’ve not gotten around to re-attempting them. I don’t think I’ve read any of the books on your list, but I love your reasons for including them.

    • I thought the Mortal Instruments books–once I got into them–were good. But I’m worried that by drawing things out over 6 books instead of 3 or 4 will drive me crazy.
I hope you get to read some of these books, too! Obviously, I think they’re all fabulous! 🙂

  15. Great books…u have a few I haven’t tried yet. I have Legend sitting on my shelf and you just made me so curious about it. Darn work! Check out our Top 10 this week.

    • hahaha…psh, work! Reading is more fun! And Legend is definitely good for reading on your time off. Very fast-paced, and Day and June are really great characters. Yay!

  16. I really really enjoyed Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour 😀 I have The Sky is everywhere as well as Going too far on my kindle and I’m looking forward to those.
I am a big fan of historical fiction with a little crush on Historical romances so I may have to check out the one you mentioned there 😀

    • Oooh! The Sky Is Everywhere and Going Too Far are two of my favorites. SO, so good! And you should definitely check out the Pink Carnation books. Really fun historical romances, with a little contemporary twist. Love them!

  19. YES! To this entire list.
Also, fix your life and read Poison Study, STAT!

It’s such an Amy book that I thought you already read it, otherwise I would have been pushing it on you.

    • haha…Next! I’m reading it next! I can’t believe I haven’t read it yet either because it DOES sound like an Amy book. I’m seriously excited!!

  20. Graceling and Poison Study are always great reads. Who doesn’t want to pant over a Hot Assassin! Great choices!

    Happy Reading!

  21. I like this list so much. I want to read the Poison Study books too, but I haven’t heard the comparison to Grave Mercy. You KNOW how I ate that one up. So WOWSERS I should also devour the Poison Study books too. They’ve been on my list for-like-ever. Sigh.

    • I think it was Angie from Angieville who mentioned in her Grave Mercy review that fans of Poison Study would love GM. That comparison just totally hooked me. Because I LOVED Grave Mercy, too. Let’s do it!

  22. rubybastille says

I’ve had my eye on “Legend” for a while now – both that and “Epic Detour” sound great!

  23. Great list! Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour made my list too, I love that book so much! The Sky is Everywhere is such a brilliant book too.
